How Narcissistic Are You?

In this video I look at narcissistic traits and ask you which, if any, you relate to. We're all a bit narcissistic to some degree so you might recognise some of the behaviours I talk about in yourself. And if you do, why? What does it all really boil down to? And what can you do to change?
I have done extensive research on narcissism and the effects of narcissistic abuse. I work as a coach specifically with people who have experienced an abusive relationship. Let me know in the comments section below what video you would like me to make about an aspect of narcissism that interests you and please subscribe to my channel!

Something I forgot to say in the video is that putting yourself in someone else's shoes can be really helpful for people who struggle with empathy. Taking the time to imagine experiencing what someone else is experiencing has been proven to help people with NPD to empathise. Also, please don't use this video to figure out how to help someone else to change! People with NPD usually don't change because they don't consistently want to. This video is aimed at people who do want to become more self aware and less narcissistic. Even NPD is on a spectrum and those who are most damaged will not be able to feel love/empathy. They might need a therapy that helps them to release some of their trauma as well as a longer term talking therapy.

Problem is that so many people just don't care about others feelings or situations. This is the current issue with the so-called conservatives in the US.
@LiveAbuseFree

@@gymnast2890 Sorry to hear that, it must be very difficult. I couldn't tell you those chances. Someone needs to experience trauma to develop a personality disorder, it's not just down to your genes. If she was doing well after all the trauma that's a good sign. Hopefully she is just like this around you to please her mum - as you say. It sounds like 'parental alienation' only with you being a grandparent. So if it's that she might treat you badly but it won't mean she shuts down in other situations. It's going to be hard for you to know either way til she's older unfortunately. 😔
@LiveAbuseFree
@LiveAbuseFree 3 года назад
@Gloria Vargo Thank you! ☺️ It's a spectrum so it depends on how narcissistic they are. They are renowned for being very hard to treat as you say. But as I said putting themselves in others shoes has been proven to help people with NPD to empathise. Not empathising can come down to not wanting to feel their own pain though this is not usually a reason they are aware of. Depending on how damaged they are, they may not be able to feel empathy at all, (not by choice). I think you're right about the idea they would fear therapy (or properly partaking in therapy and not trying to control every session), might weaken them.

But is it possible to be a narcissist and have extreme empathy? I feel like in some occasions I do have narcissistic features and it's always rooted in my insecurities, I know it deep down, but I'm also a HSP and I struggle with empathy towards everyone since I was very little, I love empathy and wouldn't change it for anything because I know how many experiences and lessons I've learned and how many people I've helped and understood with it, but it can get exhausting if I don't control myself and it.

I have an old friend who decided that he has Asbergers. Maybe it's true, I'm no expert but what the diagnosis did was made me realise that my friend did not have the same tools in the tool box when it came to empathy. Over 20 years I was as honest as possible with him without trying to put him down. We worked on it and he is much more empathetic now than I ever thought possible. Love is the cure although it must be hard to love someone as destructive as Donald Trump for example.

My mother was a narcissist. When I was a child I had a hobby making small rocking chairs out of wooden clothes pegs. She didn't care until I made one for my neighbour who thought they were cute. My mother was mad that I giving one I was making to the neighbour instead of her??? At the time narcissist wasn't in my vocabulary but I was astute enough to pick up on my mother only caring when I wanted to give the rocking chair to someone else and I didn't allow her to guilt me into not giving it. My neighbour (who was elderly and like a surrogate grandmother to me) displayed the chair with all her other ornaments and it made me feel proud. My mother would never have put my chair on the mantlepiece because it didn't fit with her proper ornaments. Narcissists are just the worst and I doubt any of them would ever click on this video because they don't ever see a problem with or question their own behaviour. Everyone else is always the problem. They are always the victim.
@angeldream1

@@angeldream1 I feel you. When you're an adult you can at least see the red flags and leave an abusive situation but when you're a child you have no choices and even if you know things aren't quite right, you blame yourself. Because as a child you think that you did something wrong (at least that's how I felt). It took me a long time to realise that I wasn't the problem and no matter how much I loved my mother, I couldn't make her love me or accept me for the person I am. Everyone wants to have a great relationship with their parents, but for some of us that just doesn't happen.

When I was younger I was a lot more narcissistic. I remember feeling frequently threatened or insecure and competitive and aggressive with other people. But it was just emotional immaturity, so with time and reflection I changed. I think it's interesting that consumerism/capitalism promotes the idea of entitlement or status or luxury as sources of satisfaction and happiness when perhaps humility and contentment and kindness are better sources.

C C - I can relate to that completely. It’s like you know deep down anyone that you ever care for or love is going to hurt you eventually, as everyone has in the past. I was in therapy a long time ago and was told that the abuse and trauma I endured did not make me special. The world didn’t owe me anything for enduring it but that it could help me to have empathy for others, starting with myself. I did not realize that I even thought this way. But I didn’t want that to be true because it meant that the world/life could be overwhelmingly cruel and uncaring. I was suppressing the fear of that being true by blaming myself and being tightly controlled with self hate. She taught me radical self acceptance, which I think saved my life. Another big thing was The Feeling Good Handbook (cognitive distortions) and the dialectic therapy she did with me. There’s a free dialectical behavior therapy workbook available online. My issues at that time were anxiety, anorexia and some BPD traits. But being raised by two people with NPD, some of the thinking had passed onto me. I could not have gotten to where I am now (surviving anorexia, few/if any panic attacks) without doing the work in therapy. Maybe this helps? Perhaps in just knowing that it is possible to change if you want it.

I have Avoidant Personality Disorder and I think there are definitely some crossover traits with NPD, just some are expressed differently (different reaction to extremely low self-esteem). I really couldn't describe how I felt at the end when you talked about trusting people and giving/returning love. I live a life devoid of trust or love at this point (I'm afraid to give but also to receive it) so it felt really alien to me, I guess I can definitely relate to a narcissist in that way. I definitely have a few traits but it's hard to admit because I don't want to hurt anyone or manipulate anybody. Just the concept really distresses me and makes me feel ashamed. Anyway, I really appreciate these videos. I can't say whether my parents are definitively narcissists, but I definitely experienced abuse. It's great how you give victims the power to examine abusers and themselves.

Reflecting on it, I realize, there are so many narcissists outthere! Myself included. I may not be a full on grandiose Narcissist but I do have narcissistic traits. And especially the myka stauffer footage was eye opening. I know so many women that act like that. In school I struggled to keep up with this behaviour because the more you act like myka, the more success you have. It's the same now between mothers. The ones that act like that, are always the center of attention and most of the other women gather around them and praise them. I feel so uncomfortable with this behaviour but I have shown it too. Especially with my narcissistic mother because she wanted me to be this perfect doll. It's really difficult because narcissistic behaviour is so common and society is structured in a way, that rewards narcissistic behaviour.

I have often asked myself why “some” of these relationships seem to work/last longer than a narc getting together with someone who has no issues. I am pretty sure it is all about admiration and back and forth supply. Not really love in the true sense. Another interesting dynamic is the borderline and narcissistic relationship, it can be like a drug, but end badly. I’m thinking two narcissists together in a relationship would last a bit longer.

I did not understand these traits to be narcissistic back then - but they were traits that were causing me problems in relationships. Which at the same time, I initially believed were caused by the others (the problems I mean) only to have to finally realise, I was the common denominator. So it was myself I needed to be looking at. Thanks for putting this in a really compassionate way. Sometimes the label of "narcissism" and "narcissistic behavior" (apart from NPD) is used as a pagoritive to criticize others, but it's really a call for some self-relection. Being called narcissistic often activates more shame in others and it exasserbates the breakdown of communication. Not to mention people calling others narcisstic is probably a form of projection anyway. I found mindfulness and working on my c-ptsd triggers through EMDR and mindfulness has really helped improve my relationship with the people I love and who love and me, and most importantly helped my own self-image and has really helped with my depression. Realizing we all have a tendency toward narcissism (perhaps its a survival mechanism) helps, and also now realizing most people with these selfish, blame-shifting behaviors are also damaged and need compassion has helped me forgive more. Alls this is to say, everyone could use time to self-relect and think objectively about their relationships and behaviors. We all need therapy!

A lot of people say when they first met me they weren't too sure about me, or didn't like me, I have no idea why to be honest, but then say how they got it wrong and actually really like me. I get on with almost everyone, Someone once told me that if another person seems rude or nasty when you first meet them, give them another chance, try and talk to them in private, 9 times out of 10 there's something going on in their life's and they are just having a bad time. There was a very rude lady at my local shop. I snapped back at her , but then felt bad so went back and apologised. It turned out she was the sole carer for her elderly mother who had dementia. Her mother would shout at her at night time and call her all sorts of horrible things, she said she still loves her mum but she doenst like her and sometines resents having to look after her. Imagine how heartbreaking that must be, she said she hates herself for how she sometimes just wants to put her mum into a home and not see her again. When I see her in the shop it's obvious when she is having a bad day so i do the simple thing of asking her how she is , and that I have so much respect for her , to hold down a full time job and care for her mother at the same time , when her mum doesn't remember her most of the time and gives her emotional abuse. That takes a strong woman. And to think my initial judgement was that she was disrespectful and nasty and had no respect for others. Turns out she is the polar opposite. I want to tell her to think about gettin help and to find a local care home for her Mum. But have no idea if that's my place or how to approach the conversation. She seems pretty isolated from what I gather. Her father has passed away, she has no children and is divorced from her husband, and her sister lives 4 hours drive away. Anyone have an opinion or advice on that?

@melindac3368 3 года назад
@@user-vf1nt8we6i It seems to be so difficult to break free of those who are so used to you as a quiet participant for these AHs. It's been years for me, and I STILL allow my mother to make me feel guilty for not doing her wishes. Ugh. It's even more difficult when they get old and demanding. I might sound heartless, but I resent the hell out of her for making me feel sorry for her. I hope the rest of your weekend goes well.
@user-vf1nt8we6i
@user-vf1nt8we6i 3 года назад
Melinda C - I understand what you mean. I don’t think you sound heartless whatsoever, it’s the truth of the situation. My aunt - refers to herself as our second mom- sounds like your mother. I have been trying to distance myself but she is very intertwined in our family. Unfortunately, she will be in my life until she passes. That might sound heartless, but I’m having to learn what you have, and how to deal with intense situations. I know that I cannot make her happy, and the energy I spent trying to please her should be turned into myself for my mental health. It is a daily battle I know I will never win, nor do I want to anymore. I can sense that she feels that she is losing control because the “love bombing” stage has started again. Fortunately I have my own space, and can choose how I want to deal with such stressors, and how to get out of the vicious cycle. I often plays these videos as I go about my day as reminders to myself and reminders of strength. When I’m able to apply what I’ve learned, the reactions are predictable and for the first time, I’m learning to see her for who she is. As someone in recovery, it’s another layer of added challenge to what I’m trying to work on for myself. Thanks for the note ☺️

I’m a people pleaser, who was abused as a child. I remember the exact time period that I sectioned off my mean parts of myself because I realized I had no friends. I realized that being kind to others led to connections. I apologized and tried to fix it, but mostly out of my own need to connect. I also do not trust people... Definitely not until they show themselves to be trustworthy-I’ve been too hurt for that! So yes, I relate to wanting validation (bc gaslit my whole childhood by a narc), and making people a “target” to connect with when I first meet them so that they like me. Idk if I’m narcissistic, I think it’s more C-PTSD/clingy attachment style thing. Idk 🤷‍♀️

I realise that this is an old video, but I've just found it and it's been a huge help. I'm just at the end of a 12 year abusive relationship with a Narcissist, and over that period I've gone from a reasonably balanced, happy individual to a total psychological mess. I came here to find out if the was 'me' or partner that had the Narcissism, as I've been put through so much (gaslighting etc.) that I felt that I might actually be the messed up one. This has served to answer that question, and help me to get that straight in my head. Thankfully, I only identified with a small amount of the content personally, but it rings true almost exactly for partners persona. Thank you SO much for this content, your work here has true value. Please keep helping people with your channel. Much Love and Respect to you. ❤

Zoe, I really appreciate your channel so much and truly believe this is how the world can change - being self aware, healing and genuinely loving ourselves and others. ❤ I'm a total extrovert, extremely talkative, empathic, and used to listen about 80% of the time for most of my life. I truly care for people no matter who they are or what they do. Once I realized I wasn't getting anything out of the relationships I was in, I stepped back a bit and started setting boundaries. Unfortunately, I've realized there aren't as many kind, loving people that I thought there were. I've only met one person in my entire life who genuinely seemed interested in hearing about me. Sadly, she's not in my life any more. Now I don't have any friends besides my daughter and husband. That's it. I'm chronically ill and can't go out much and miss interacting with people, but when I am able to get out once in a while, most people seem self absorbed, which is exhausting for me. I used to have energy for that, but not any more. I'm just rambling on, but this really hit me because I am naturally the opposite of what was described in this video and its just sad that I've never experienced a friend like I've been to others. I guess I'm grieving that reality. I guess I just made this about myself. LOL

As I get older...I find myself having less interest in people, I also have a lower degree of tolerance....specially for those who all they do is take and take. I don’t consider myself a narcissist, I’m actually a great listener, I’m compassionate and I have empathy for other people’s difficulties and bad experiences in life. When it comes to relationships and friendships, I am a giver... I’m a supportive friend ...constant, loving and solid friend. But I don’t get the same from my friends and the people around me. (Never ever) . And to be honest, I have reach a point in my life where ... I want to be there for myself before someone else, if people don’t value my time and my friendship...then I no longer want them in my life. I reach the point were I no longer want to accommodate others. I now want to be more selective when it comes to who do I allow in my life, who do I give my friendship to. I want more intelligent people in my life, specially people with a higher emotional intellect. I want to spend my time with people who talk about social topics, political subjects, religion, social injustice, the history of the world....lovers of nature and all things beautiful, people who are not afraid to be transparent with their character, people who have more things to talk about besides their material gains or how they are the best ones at their fucking jobs! I’m exhausted of ignorant and mediocre people. ( Does this make me a narcissist? ) I think if anything, they are more narcissist than I could ever be!

Bibi T Wanting those things from people doesnt makes you a narcissist. They make a you somebody that is seeking substance in your interactions and more meaningful connections with people that share your interests. You long for people that have the ability to not only accept what you have to offer but are able to reciprocate it as well. I find myself exactly where you are right now and have analyzed most of my “friendships” lately and realized that most of them are superficial acquaintanceships at best.

I wonder most times if I’m actually the narcissist because people are constantly interrupting me, it bothers me so much that I’m mindful that maybe I’m not interesting enough or maybe I do it to them so they’re doing it to me… but the more mindful I am about it… the more I notice it’s happening. The more I feel disconnected to people… the more I wonder if it is me that’s actually the narcissist.

Everything was a constant competition and I never understood why. I couldn't say I scraped my knee without her listing all the ways she'd been hurt way worse than I was. It went on and on all the time. She'd ditch me the minute anyone better came along. It always hurt me deeply and she hasn't spoken to me since we turned 18 but it suddenly makes a lot of sense now what happened there. This was very helpful. Aw, that poor little girl. This is probably the most helpful narcissistic self diagnose video I have seen. I think everyone will find something they do that is narcissistic, the point is where do we draw the line and what is considered too much or even clinical. Still got work to do, but think I am already at a much better place

I'm really glad you found it helpful! That's great that you're making progress! :) I think when it's someone else who has abused us, it's good to understand if they have a diagnosis so we can see what wasn't about us. But with ourselves, I don't think it matters so much as long as you recognise the traits and are working on them and recognise that the less narcissistic we are the more fulfilling our lives can be. I think otherwise a diagnosis is only useful if you're not aware of these traits, or to get the right treatment (if necessary).

Always great to see you! Love the video, as usual. My thing is the EasyJet tickets. I get the early boarding pass. Airports make me anxious and having that little bit of space to put my luggage up in the space and sit down is convenient as comforting for me. I love convenience and time efficiency in most things also. Somehow I feel like there’s a kind of weird rush for the seats when flying EasyJet. On the major airlines I don’t usually pay for perks or travel first class tho. I do appreciate the early boarding on EasyJet. One time I flew regular boarding and this guy just talked to us the whole time about Boris and Trump. He was kind of aggressively talking about how dumb ppl are and just generally went on with his opinions for the whole time we were sitting there, and it was a long time. He was really loud. 😂😂😂. Another time ppl kind of lined up in a weird way and when it was time to board there was a weird issue about who was ahead of who. It was quite the thing to see. Lol. I was a bit stressed out. I do really like flying EasyJet. I think it’s a good airline.
