Michael Phelps can swim a 50-meter butterfly in 24.7 seconds. That’s more than half of a football field at a pace of over two meters per second! And because he makes swimming look so easy, regular people think they can just hop in the pool and swim fast without any real training.
But when it comes time to actually swim, most people can barely keep their heads above water. Swimming is one of the hardest sports in the world. It’s more difficult than football, baseball, hockey, you name it! But before you disagree, let us show you why.

I think it should be law that every major city or town should have a proper 50m swimming pool. So more people can become fit & healthy, create jobs, and better community. Every swimmer I know seems good people with a mindset to be kind, healthy, respect water as it’s precious.

I believe every neighbourhood has to have at least a 25m pool. 👍 no one would be left out.

What really strange from swimming is, it is hard, yet it is fun and not intimidating. I've been two months since I start my swimming journey almost each every day for 1-3 hours , I feel like I am addicted to swimming. So many room for improvement, and I think for a lifetime

After seeing Guo Jincheng swim 50m in under 30sec without arms... I almost feel that I'm a rock trying to swim .. I can't beat that time even if I use my arms and fins...

I'm 74 and swim 10,000 yds a week. One of the drills we do after every workout is swim lengths under water. I find it really helps in the oxygen deficit department. At 74 I need all the help I can get. All the best.

Great video. I don't know about blood, sweat and tears though. Maybe a little blood if you do the daring foot-out-of-pool exit. Other than that most sweat and tears just blend in with the pool water. No one will ever know about your sweating or crying!

Have you tried waterpolo? Swimming, wrestling and handball all in one game! It makes me whinge less about sprint reps, as at least I’m not doing them with a wrestling match as my rest phase!

Hi, love your videos so far. But there's one point which doesn't really make sense to me as an engineer. The density of the water alone doesn't make swimming hard. It's the combination of density and viscosity of water when compared to air which makes it harder to move through water.

In my 65 plus years of swimming, there is always some thing to work on with mechanics. I prefer that to technique.....

Swimming is comparable only to ballet, in a sense how technical it is, and how much grace, strength and agility it requires.

As a swimmer I agree its harder than most sports, but some sports like football and wrestling are undoubtedly harder physically and mentally.

I am 14 years old and I can confidently say that I have multiple hundreds of hours swimming. To make a long story short, It’s torture. Sure I can swim 50 yards in close to 25 seconds, but it’s not the physical part that I hate. It’s the back and forth, over and over and over and over almost every day, limiting your oxygen, not talking to anyone, knowing I could be doing anything else- but here I am, kicking my legs and trying to perfect my pulls through the water. Backstroke is the worst in my opinion. lots of people think you can breathe while you do it, but that just isn’t true. Especially during a race, there’s always water splashing up your nose and into your mouth. It feels like you’re being waterboarded. Most of the pools that are available for me to practice at are not heated well, so swimming in the winter time is just cold. On the bright side, I can eat whatever I want and not get fat because I burn over 1000 calories during every practice. (Yes I typed up this whole thing because I feel like I don’t get enough credit for swimming which is something my parents force me to do and I just want to brag to everyone about how good I am at it because it’s like the only thing I’m good at.). Thank you for your time -Evan

Hi Evan! You're right, dedication to swimming is tough and can take up a lot of time, especially as an age group swimmer. We recommend you try to find a few more bright spots in swimming, or let your parents know how you feel! Being good a swimming is one thing, and loving the water is another - and it's ok if you ever need to step away or take time off :)
