This SharePoint tutorial will demonstrate how to add a calendar to SharePoint Online. Specifically, this tutorial will demonstrate how to add a calendar to a SharePoint Online site. Unfortunately, there is no SharePoint Online calendar web part available for use in SharePoint Online. Microsoft deprecated the calendar web part in SharePoint Online. Instead, this tutorial will demonstrate how to add a SharePoint Online list calendar view. This entails creating a SharePoint Online modern list and applying a calendar view. With this approach, users can add items to the SharePoint Online list and they will be displayed in the SharePoint Online calendar. This tutorial will also demonstrate how to add the SharePoint Online calendar to a SharePoint Online modern page and to a channel of a team in Microsoft Teams.

Great video, very helpful! I've successfully made my list and converted it to calendar view with start and end dates. Now that I've got it on my sharepoint site it looks like anyone in the organization can add calendar items. Is there a way for me to limit that to just a select group of people?

You would need to restrict access to the list. If the list was created on a site where the entire company has member permissions or higher then you can follow the steps outlined in this video. This is what I was looking for, thanks! Quick question: After following your tutorial, I was only able to add a date (e.g. Dec. 26), but I am unable to specify a time range (e.g. 12:00 - 1:00) on that date. Can the list/calendar be edited to allow this?

Hi Collin, to the best of my knowledge, you can only specify dates (and not times) in the SharePoint List calendar view. A work around might be to add start and end time fields in your list and have users populate them and click into them to see the details. Hope this helps!

Thanks, this is great! Quick Q - I've added a category field with a multi choice option which is in different colours. Any idea if you're able to get the calendar entry to be displayed in those colours? At present all entries are the same colour - multi colours for different entires would really help... Do you think it's doable? Thanks! :)

I've received this question a few times and the last time I tested it,it wasn't possible to change the color of the entry using this method. It may be possible to do so with JSON formatting but ive not tested it. I'd suggest posting this question on the Microsoft Tech Community

Hi mate, I have been set a task but not sure how to do it in SharePoint, I need a room booking system, I have created one for bespoke rooms very easily using separate calendars for each room but the task I have been set is a horizontal list of specific rooms and a vertical list of times, in fact, is there a way to replace 'time' to 'period' as I work in a school? Hi there, I've never built a room booking system using SharePoint. I would suggest exploring MS Bookings or have the rooms setup as resources in MS Outlook which can be booked only once at a time. this will also display availability! Hope this helps!

Nice video, unfortunately it appears that Microsoft still has some work to do to make the calendar feature as effective as it was in older versions. Recurring events is a key feature for my users. Embedding a legacy calendar looks terrible using the Embed web part.

Hi Jeff, thanks for the comment. I agree that the modern calendar is not quite on par with the legacy version. Not having the ability to integrate with Outlook as with the legacy version is also a major miss. Hopefully Microsoft will address this feedback over time.

I'm seeing a lot of question about syncing the MS list Calendar into Outlook, I have the same problem. I tried using Power Automate with Outlook V4, "Create an event' when an item is added into List, but it failed.How about adding holidays into the MS list Calendar that you just created? Is it possible to grab a holiday calendar for the whole year and embed that into the List? Thanks for amazing tutorial and for interacting with your audience.

Hi there, sorry for the delay. I'd suggest posting the issues you are facing with your flow over on the Microsoft Tech Community. Regarding the holidays you can build a flow or integration to pull in holidays via am API. For example Time And Date has open API that you can use. Hope this helps and thanks for watching

Hi Mark, unfortunately you cannot Sync a SharePoint Online calendar with Outlook. This approach is creating a list versus a calendar object in previous versions of SharePoint. You will likely need to explore using a group calendar to accomplish this. Hope this helps!

You're very welcome. There are multiple ways to do this. One option could would require that you stop inheriting permissions for the list from the parent Site and create a new permission group with read-only permissions. You would also need to remove the existing permission groups.

Hi there, when you setup the calendar view you want to ensure that you select two different columns. One should be used to reference the start date and another the end date. If you select the same column, then the item will only display on that one date. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

For some reason, the Create New View doesn't exist for me...The only options available to me are Edit Current View and Format Current View. I wonder if it is related to the licensing tier.

What about making the calendar appear in the user's outlook?

Hi there, unfortunately its not possible to synchronize a SharePoint Online List with the Calendar view applied to a user's outlook. In earlier versions of SharePoint, there was a dedicated calendar web part that supported this functionality but, that is not available with this approach. Hope this helps!

I'm glad you found this video useful. To Delete an event you would need to click into the event and click the delete button. Alternatively you can switch your view back to a list view and right click on the item and click delete. Hope this helps and thanks

My other issue is that you can still create the "deprecated" calendar by choosing the "Classic Experience" from the "Add an app" page. But I can't just add these "classic" apps to the site or page? That is also fkn stupid. I liked being able to "Add a web part" and choose from the list of content I've already built. Alot of things about SPO suck...IMO

@@rkirk2k Sorry for the delay! I tested this out again and it worked for me. You want to ensure you set the start and end date to the respective columns. You also want to ensure the end date is greater than the start date.
