Does your snow blower struggle to drive forward? If that's the case, you may need to replace your worn friction disc. Watch as we replace the snow blower friction disc in an Ariens Deluxe 28 model Sno-Thro. As you can see, it's easy doesn't take much time and can be completed in the comfort of your own garage.
Buy a snow blower friction disc at our online parts store: parts.ariens.com/searchresult...
Don't have an Ariens Deluxe model? That's ok, because the friction disc replacement procedure is similar across all Ariens snow blower model platforms. As always, read the safety section in the operator's manual before attempting any service procedures and follow along with the instructions in the service guide for your unit.

I replaced my friction disc on my Ariens snowblower by using this video. I was taking the snowblower to a repair shop to be repaired. The total time from removal to replacement was thirty minutes. When I tipped the snowblower over gas was coming out of the carburetor. I placed it back on its wheels. I started the snowblower and turned the gas flow off. The engine stopped and I flipped it up. No fuel came out of the carburetor. This video saved me time and money. When I picked up the friction disc I asked the person if they sell Ariens anymore. There were none on the showroom floor. He said that they were sold out and on backorder. Thank you for this video. I also used Partstree to look up where one washer went.

Thanks for sharing the video. It really did help! Although, in reality, your machine is brand new with zero grease and crap and mine was gummed up with shredded rubber from the wear on the friction wheel. Start out by cleaning the drive plate and friction disk with some degreaser to get rid of all the gunk and oil. This will help greatly with slippage and may save you having to tear it apart. As far as replacing the disk, the hardest part may be removal of the wheel since the shaft has probably corroded over the years. You could try a wheel puller or knock it loose using hammer and pry bar. Might want to bring the old part to the dealer to make sure they get you the correct replacement. On 920 models, rim part gets replaced and is held onto carrier bearing with three star drive screws. They are tightly torqued and I had to clamp the rim in a vice to get them loose.

Helpful comments! All the more reason for everyone out there to grease their snow blower axles annually, or more if necessary. Cleaning and lubrication as instructed in your operator's manual are some of the best things you can do for your Ariens Sno-Thro.

@@88omarz Same here. I just came back inside to see if I completely missed him removing the bearing flange on the right side also. Guess not. Apparently the round end of my hex shaft on the right is just going to take a little persuading to slide out of the bearing. I don't remember exactly but seems like I should be able to use an extension with an oversized socket, one size drive higher than the extension of course, butt the socket up to the outside of the machine, slide the extension through the center of the socket, make sure to line it up with the end of the shaft and gently tap it with a mallet. Slowly moving away from the word gently until it lets loose). That's my plan anyways. Probably lose patience after a few minutes and start swinging the 30 oz Estwing Happy Gilmore style.

Lets say that I need to do some maintenance gear lube and inspection by tilting the snowblober prior to remove the belly cover, my questions are: Is there a way to remove all the gas to empty tank or does the close position of the gas tank sufficient? Second Is it important that the oil in the crankcase be also empty fefore tilting the snowblower?
@AriensChannel
@AriensChannel 5 лет назад
Thanks for asking, Gino! Your oil won't need to be drained, however we do recommend draining the gas from the fuel tank. You could try siphoning the fuel, however, as long as the fuel is about halfway down, you can tip the unit onto the front of the housing without risking the fuel dripping through the fuel tank cap. Also, once the fuel is drained, you'll want to drain the fuel from the carburetor bowl: 1. Close fuel valve. 2. Position a small container under carburetor (carburetor is located directly below the engine primer pump). 3. Remove bolt / screw from bottom of carburetor and allow fuel to drain. 4. Reinstall bolt / screw into carburetor. Once that fuel is drained from the bowl, you shouldn't experience any fuel dripping during the service procedure.

There sure is, Stephen. The traction drive clutch cable adjustment procedure in your operator's manual is what you're looking for. The tighter the cable, the more quickly the traction drive pulley engages the friction disc when you engage the lever. The looser the cable, the less apt the traction drive pulley is to engage the friction disc. If you give us your model number and serial number for your unit, we can point you directly to the procedure in your operator's manual.

Ariens, I’ve had my 28 delux for about 6 years now, just replaced the friction disk. Your video was helpful, however, a bit more detail would have been appreciated. There are two washers on the friction disk (a standard and a goofy shaped square one with one end angled down) it took a few min. to puzzle them in. They fell off without me noting their position. Otherwise, fantastic how to video. My only complaint about my machine is that I wish it had tracks. Well, maybe when this one dies in 10-20 years.
@AriensChannel
@AriensChannel 4 года назад
Thank you very much for your feedback, Don! The reason you don't see those two washers is because this unit uses our current friction disc design, which switched from the style you have in your machine about 3 - 4 years ago. The new design is lighter, a bit easier to change, has less vibration, and since it has no metal components, has less chance of rusting to the hex shaft. Just the same, we're glad this helped guide you through your procedure!

Why do you take off both wheels when only left side is needed to remove friction disc.?
@AriensChannel
@AriensChannel 3 года назад
Thanks for asking, Jerry. The main reason we take both wheels off is to make the hardware more accessible with hand tools. Now, with a ratcheting wrench, the clearance may not be an issue when removing the hardware. However, you'll thank yourself for removing both wheels when starting to reinstall the bottom cover hardware with your hands / fingers.

How do I know when the friction disc is wore out

My snowblower is 25 years old, it's an amazing machine. I moved to an area where the snow is rare (thank god) I used it the other day, just to use it on a couple inches. When I tried to engage it into the slowest gear it hesitated, it would go into second no problem, then back into first with no problem. Any idea what would cause this intermittent engagement?
@AriensChannel
@AriensChannel 3 года назад
That's a good question, James. First, check the cable that extends from the wheel-drive clutch paddle (on left handlebar) to the bottom of the machine. Ensure that this cable is taut when engaged. If not, you'll need to adjust it. This could also be an indication of friction disc wear, but we can't be for certain. Our best suggestion is to take your machine to your nearest Ariens dealer for diagnosis. You can find an Ariens dealer in your area with our dealer locator tool: www.ariens.com/en-us/dealer-locator

The horizontal shaft inside the lower cover likely needs a very very light coat of grease. You dont want a ton. And the shiny disc could have oil on it. You clean it with rubbing alcohol on a shop towel or paper towel in a pinch. The small 4 to 5 inch rubber circle disc can also be gently cleaned with a slightly damp cloth with isopropyl alcohol / rubbing alcohol. Makes no difference 70 % or 91 or 99 percent.

My friction disc failed after only 25 hours of use (5 years), the snowblower would not move in the slow speeds. The rubber on the friction disc is VERY soft, they call this 'smooth engagement' but what's not smooth is the amount it costs to have the snow blower sent to the dealership for replacement. @@jimd2652 You're very welcome, Jim! And no, the Auto-Turn feature cannot be modified. However if you're experiencing issues, there is an adjustment procedure that might help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fDVAnmvbovs.html

WOW the video close ups of your hands wearing blue gloves made it very difficult to see what you are actually doing !

Wow. With a tiny bit of effort, a few more pictures/different angles and that could have been really helpful. Lazy

Sorry about that, Mark. This was actually one of the earliest service how-to videos we piloted. Getting much better now with new equipment and new methods. Check out some of our latest videos to see where we're at now!

I have a 2013 Ariens Platinum 30 SHO that I just bought used. Paid a LOT for such a model, relatively speaking to what I could have got for less. Thought process was it is a quality name and model. It looks new, hardly used. First time out the damn wheels don't engage enough to move the unit. Very disappointed; I could have stopped at any hardware store and bought a generic model brand new for the same price with no issues. This is a snow blower, it should not require maintenance like this for its basic operations at such low useage state. My God, there are units out there older than me still going. I like buying Ariens bc its local, but it will be hard to go that way next time.

These friction discs had to have been defective. Not a single warning about faulty friction disc rubber peeling off issues. I had replaced it last year after many years of use. In less than a year, a new friction disc failed; peeled right off. It had to have been a defective batch as when I went looking for reviews of the Arien’s part, nearly all the reviews on their own site stated the same problem. Ariens doesn’t look after their customers and they are not cheap. Also, where I live in MT., their is no other choice. I’m buying a Honda next time if I have to drive 600 miles and spend twice the money as it is t worth the hassle , money or time to repair with faulty parts. Your company stinks as does the pot metal parts you build out of. You also miss tapped the spark plug threads to be at an unachievable for the spark plug wrench. I ended up having to grind down and existing wrench to change the factory plug. Garbage! The money saved on the front end of this piss poor design will be spent in winter hellscape when you have to repair it in the cold damp spring. Am I angry about this….damn straight!
