Here I demonstrate the step by step process of how to replace the tensioner assembly and Idle pulley on a 2003 Toyota 4Runner. The idle pulley is at the top An is very easy to change however the tensioner assembly is difficult to change due to the amount of space and parts you have to remove to replace it. Because of the difficulty of the tensioner assembly I went ahead and spilt these videos into Part 1 being the idle pulley and part 2 the tensioner assembly.

Just did this on my 03 v8 Pretty easy I had the 4 inch pulley, but installed a dayco 3.5 inch assembly and used the old belt, no problems so far. I did remove the power steering pulley to pop the alternator out. Easy peasy....

ive been wanting to drive a v8 4runner. i have a 99sr5 v6 rwd. also have a 01 landcruiser which has the same v8 engine and it move the cruiser around very well. the landcruiser weighs a lot more than the runner too. changing these pulleys on the cruiser today and happened across your video party on

Good job man and thanks for filming that. How do you release the force on the belt? Turn the tensioner with socket ? I forget from prior experience

Yes, but keep in mind it is a tensioner to keep the belt tight and it is usually pretty hard with a normal socket and ratchet. I would recommend using a long breaker bar or an actual serpentine tool that is long and has plenty of leverage.

@@bullseyenate231 thanks. Do you think replacing only the pulley and not the entire tensioner assembly is an ok idea? Not sure if the entire assembly should be replaced. It’s obviously easier to just swap out the pulley but hope it doesn’t result in other issues.

@@ko6128 are you having problems with the top idle pulley or the tensioner pulley? If you are having problems with the top idle pulley then I would say just change that one for now. It’s way easier. If you need the tensioner pulley replaced you have to change the whole thing you cannot just change the pulley on the tensioner. You could disassemble it and change the bearings on it but I would replace the entire thing because you gotta think about that tensioner loosing some of its tension Over the years as well. Not worth it to risk having to go back and do it again so I recommend changing the whole thing.

@@bullseyenate231 ok, I hear you. Yes, the pulley with the noise is the tensioner one on the passenger side, not the idler one. I already bought a new tensioner pulley from Toyota so I’ll see if that alone fixes the noise. Ridiculous how much it costs when all that’s needed is a new bearing and press into the original pulley. Thanks for the reply !

Is there a torque spec for the idler pulley bolt? I've been trying to find the info, just had to replace the tensioner and PS pump on my '03 GX470 and now it's eaten the rib closest to the engine off of two belts I think it has to be that idler or PS pump misaligned.

Yes, there are always specific torques for this kind of thing however I do not know what it is off hand…I would have to look it up.

@@bullseyenate231 I found it, 29 ft-lbs. I think I had mine too tight and it was causing the lip of the fan pulley to cut the rib off, much appreciated!

I was able to fix mine by changing just the pully which was squeaking and then frozen. 20mins. 2003 Toyota Sequoia 180k.

Yes if the upper idler pulley is the only thing that needs changing it’s a super quick job. Unfortunately for me my tensioner pulley was froze so I went ahead and changed both of the while I was at it.

Keith Campbell, about 4hrs but I was making a video and trying to figure everything out as I went. Honestly you could probably do it in about 2 to 2 1/2hours depending on your experience.

@@bullseyenate231 Thanks man,i trying to change deal with my power steering pump on my 07 Toyota 4runner V6 4.0L but seem like my new Reman isn't the prefect fit. got the pump and compare them which look very identical. I put on my new /reman pump but when it came to put the serpentine belt back on,it couldn't go over the pulley. The hole that you put the 5.5mm Allen key in to hold the Tensioner broke on me 😔. I try not to frustrate myself and not going give up.

So i got the serpentine belt over the pulley. It was my fault because i didnt push the Tensioner all the way back but now it's up and running like a dream 😅.
