Thank you Whitney, it helps to see someone actually go through the process instead of just reading about what to look for and smell, at least that’s how I learn. Thanks for the tip on the fabric sewing guide, I found it on thrifty books for $10.00 with shipping.

I do believe that was the book used in my textiles class (or one very much like it) during my undergraduate life. It was the most expensive book our bookstore had at the time, and it came with a packet of samples for doing burning or chemical tests to determine fiber content. It was $120 new (paperback, too!) and it was the first year it was used. I wish I had held onto it! After you did the tests, you glued or stapled the swatches into the book. Thanks for doing this, it was a trip down memory lane! PS, yes, I’m old, the year was 1975 or 76.

Back to my DH's login-this is ladylouse... Ramie cotton blend sweaters are my favorite-I can't find them, any more!! :+( However, I did locate some Ramie Cotton blend on fabric.com-I'll have to check and see if any of it is knit, though... Ramie originated in Asia. Derived from a plant called "Chinese Nettle" (Boehmeria nivea) _it has been used for over 5 thousand years in China, India and Indonesia making it older than cotton!! It was also used to wrap mummies in Egypt-5000-3000 B.C.!! Thanks for the "burn test" review!! Good reminder for my old brain!! :+) Have a great Sunday, and thank you again for inviting us into your home-and sharing your time and skills with us!! :+)I look forward to Tuesday!! TY!

I’ve done quite a bit of burn testing myself as we get lots of fabric donated at Textiles West, the nonprofit where I teach. I’ve seen another chart that has the helpful information about whether the fabric self-extinguishes or if it must be blown out. Protein fibers will self-extinguish and plant fibers must be blown out. I’ve found this to be helpful when my nose is a little confused. I don’t know where the chart came from.

Best teaching info I’ve seen. I have a lot of mysteries; heading for the flame. Grateful. Questions: ..what is the shade of your lipstick? ..is there a pattern for your shirt? ..I was surprised at the very sheer fabric being cotton!

My lipstick is warrior by Hourglass (from Sephora), my shirt is the v-neck blouse from Bootstrap Fashions Patterns (I did a video on it on Friday), and I was surprised about quite a bit of the fabric I inherited, especially the ones that ended up being cotton!

I use to buy raime fabric made up skirts....summer-type fabric-light...not sure of contents but it was so nice to wear.Ramie has been grown in China for many centuries, and farmers in ancient China are known to have used the fiber to weave clothing.Ramie was used to produce an open-weave fabric called mechera, used for shirts and dressing gowns suitable for warm climates. The French painter Raoul Dufy designed in the early 20th century patterns for prints on mechera used by the French shirtmaker Charvet.[5]

Thank you for this information! I have done burn tests before. The natural fibers always confuse me but I know the synthetics right away. Do you smell it while burning or right after the flame is blown out? Thank you.

I smell it right after I blow it out. Be careful not to sniff hot ash up your nose! Ask me how I know 🙄.

I was testing out some free knits I was given from some Walmart sale I think, so I assume they were all just poly or some other plastic type fiber.. but one of them flamed up and would not go out (I Had it over the sink.. ). Since I cook often, I do not believe I will be making any loungewear out of it, because it does have some plastic fiber in it too.. so highly flammable plus melting are a very bad combo for people who dance near flames LOL. My guess it it has a small bit of cotton going on in there too, but not enough to make it breathable enough for me. It is hard for me to tell by the smell because the burning plastic overwhelms any more subtle odors from the test. NO MORE PLASTIC FIBERS (outside a bit of stretch of course) LOL :)
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 3 года назад
This is very true. Anything blended with a poly can be hard to determine over the melted plastic smell. I

Will fabric burn differently if it still has the sizing in it and how does cotton burn?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 7 месяцев назад
I don't think the sizing makes a difference as it would burn off pretty quickly. Cotton burns quickly and has the smell of burning paper/wood. It's a natural fiber so it doesn't melt, but leaves behind ash.
@garyomglol
@garyomglol Год назад
Very informative video! Can you describe burning 98% cotton 2% spandex/elastane? What it smell like and how do you distinguish from burning 100% cotton? I have spandex induced skin allergy and I need a way to identify as I'd came across fabric labels that don't tell the truth. Thanks..
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery Год назад
As a general rule of thumb, 100% cotton (knit) will have some mechanical stretch, but won't have the recovery. This means that it won't bounce back after being stretched. If you do the burn test and get some hard bits (the synthetic part), it's most likely spandex. If you burn and just get ash - you are good to go!
@garyomglol
@garyomglol Год назад
@@TomKatStitchery Awesome! I do notice a sticky residue if I burn cotton with Spandex in a greater mixture like 20%. But that recovery, you are right on. It bounces like rubber band.
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery Год назад
@@garyomglol if it bounces like a rubber band, then there’s Lycra/spandex in there.
