How to Figure 8 Walk-for Better Walking Form. This follow up to my circle walking video expands the original exercise to a smooth transition to the opposite circle. This will improve your mindfulness as you walk. This is a great integrative, functional exercise. Walking the figure 8 will help you recognize any problems with your current walking technique, like over-striding, leaning forward, duck foot walking, or using your hips incorrectly. Only be recognizing issues with you walking technique can we start to correct them. Better walking form will improve your confidence, decrease your risk of falling, and reduce impact on your joints. One of the best ways to prevent problems with your back, hip, knees, and feet is to understand how to move properly from the core. Most people are never taught how to do this. We just assume we know how to do it right, but that is not the case. That is why there are so many people with chronic pain and why we have an epidemic of joint replacements. Take your power back by learning to move more consciously.

Just a heads-up be mindful of your surroundings. I noticed the guy on the bike. He rode behind you and came back and took a bag off of the table.

Thanks. I saw him go by but not come back. I try to keep my eyes peeled on my bag, but your point is well taken. It could happen really fast.

Dr do your courses help me prevent shin splints? If so which course do you recommend ? Thanks It’s not a weakness in my shins. It’s not bad shoes. I just have this feeling that things aren’t aligned if that makes sense.

I believe if this is a chronic issue that is not from a specific injury, the course can help. There is generally a functional issue going on that can be corrected with proper practice. The Walking Code Online Course 2023 is the full course which I would recommend.

Can you say something about width of foot placement? Sometimes it looks like your feet are being placed as if on the same line in front of each other

When walking the circle, the feet should be traveling on the same line. If walking forward normally, the feet should be the width as if you were standing with the feet together, side by side.

Toes pointing slightly outwards is good 👍for mindful walking..?????

I don’t think we should have pointing the toes out as a goal. The feet should be facing forward. A slight toe-out up to 20!degrees is viewed as a normal variation, but that is not an ideal. The joints in the foot, knee, and hip are best aligned when pointing directly where you are going.

Is the inside leg the leading leg or is it the outside leg which leads?

If you mean the leg that is powering the step, it alternates with each step.

I was just thinking about doing this or doing a zigzag if I actually want to move from point A to point B while getting the benefits of rotation.

You are getting the benefits of rotation even when you walk straight. Most people just can’t feel it. That is assuming you are walking correctly.
