I am doing an electronics training about Circuits and Components, we've Also learned how to use Files in a class called "Manual Machining", the direction of filing is forward (not backward) because this will damage the teeth of the File, after finishing, we use a metallic brush to clean the file from all Burr, if left without cleaning, that burr will rust in the file and then the file teeth will start to rust.

I am from a third world country (Iran) and live in an industrial country (Norway). My father had only 5 class of elementary school but he was a master in metalworking I have not seen anyone so good as him here in Norway. Unfortunately he gave all of his skills to my older brother and nothing left for me.

I heard one such master state that there are no masters, only experts. They explained that masters cannot be surpassed, which would make your father unable to teach your older brother. You can reach his level through experience and hard work if that is what you hope to do.

I remember spending my allowance on files and ruining them in a day. I used them to start cleaning up a freshly chopped log that I hoped to use in some wood project; the log was still very healthy, so it was basically super sappy and "wet" which gunked up my files. I never had the sense to clean them at the time and checked them a week later to find them with a full layer of rust where I didn't clean them.

@emeraldmage5265

i would think filing it from above n try your best to keep it as straight as possable, if that doesnt work too well i'd suggest sophening it with a torch or get a sander with a rough grit, 30 should be fine for steel, also i'd draw a straight line on the side of the piece of steel (if possable) n file/sand to said line, ik im two years late but did you fix your problem or nah, if not then i hope this helps

Use a machinist square also called as try square to check the right angle on two sides and move on to filing the other two sides until they are at 90 angle, then you should have the parallel sides, hope that helps, good day!

Thank you for the video. It is hard to find a decent manual on "how to use a tool properly" on the french web. Maybe, I am not good at using google. In spite I am educated, when I was in school, in courses (techno classroom) we have learned how to use a computer (back to 1998-2000) and electronic soldering. Unfortunately, I have never learned how to use tools properly, and today I just use them. It seemed obvious to use a file in a single direction but you provide me confirmation about this. Thanks again. If you know a good website (an not a poor and common DIY blog) on the good usage of tools in english or french I will be glad to read it.

A very good video indeed. Nice to see someone clearly explaining that a file only cuts in one direction and also showing how to use a card file. Just one tip I tell my students is that if you take some ordinary chalk and rub it into the teeth before using the file it helps prevent clogging, especially when working on aluminium, But great video, thanks for posting.

I would recommend a hacksaw instead of a file. You would need a file for touching up the cut afterwards, but a hacksaw should get you through. If not, then an angle grinder with a cutoff disc should do the job.

It can remove debris between the teeth with the idea softer metals will disolve first. A cheap way files are tweaked rather than resharpened is using a very similar method, very hit and miss 1 in 10 may be usable.

Imagine a brass bar 1/4" thick. I want to cut 1/4" notches in them say about 1/4" deep. What is the best method to do it? If a file can do the job - what type of file should I use? Approximately how long will it take to cut one notch?
@chrisb.2741
@chrisb.2741 2 года назад
Just an observation with your question and likely why you have not received a response. If you are cutting 1/4" wide notches along the length all is well and good. However, if you are cutting a 1/4'' wide notch in each end you really are not cutting a notch but instead only shortening your bar stock (your cut width is as wide as the stock). This likewise goes for the depth of your notches if going along the length. You are essentially only cutting your bar stock into sections (1/4" stock with 1/4" deep notches you again are going all the way through the stocks thickness). In any case you could go about getting the result you want in several different ways by using either thicker stock or smaller notches. Simply use a 1/4" file in the shape you want (round, square, triangular). Or use a large file 1/4" thick that has a filing edge if a square notch is to be achieved. You could use a 1/4" triangular file with the triangular apex (tip of triangle along the length) pointed down onto the material to achieve a triangular notch and either stop there having a triangle notch or continue by turning the file 45 degrees with the flat touching the top of the initial triangular cut and file until you reach the bottom of the triangle thereby achieving again a square notch or finish it with a round file achieving a round notch. Hope this helped.

It is worth noting lift off on the rearward stroke is not necessary if no pressure is being applied. Maintaining consistency is probably the most important thing to remember when using a file so for some people it may be more useful to use a rearward stroke with no pressure to maintain a consistent angle. Logically speaking if a file cannot make it past a few rearwards strokes and looses its ability to cut then you have a very shitty Chinese file. One exception is Nicholson files. If they are older then they are made very well, but if you look below the word "Nicholson" and it says Mexico then it is no good, if it says Brazil then you have about a 60/40 chance of it being good. In the end if anyone on Earth ever says they have never made a rearward stroke with a file then they are a goddamn liar. However, personally I believe if a person purchases a tool with their own money then they can use it any way they please and it isn't my place to dictate they use the tool correctly. I am under the distinct impression people own what they buy, but what do I know I guess we are telling people how to use their own property now. Sad Sad world we live in. Every governing body across the world has everyone thinking its right to own people and tell them what to do, who to work for and the extent of property everyone can have. That is a direct contradiction of freedom and is the exact opposite.
