Of course, the hardest part of all this adjusting the brake shoe to the best spot where it's not rubbing too much but yet getting effective e-brake that will hold the truck. These are lousy parking brakes and even after replacing the whole system with new parts and adjusting the best you can they will barely hold the truck to pass a safety inspection. So, after I get mine inspected, I never use them again until the next inspection. Even light use will make them ineffective within a year. I bought my 2004 Tahoe new in 2004 and have taken better care of it than anything else (according to my family) and I have yet to find any real solution to this problem.

Got a 03' Yukon, driver's side feels good, can't move w/ hands w/ E-brake on, but passenger's side still slips just a little in both directions. Ever seen that before? - thanks for all the good quality, helpful videos

Great video. Helped a lot. Just in time... etc... btw you installed the retaining clip backwards. The ears point back to keep it from spinning and it holds the shoe back further when installed correctly.

Ditto on the backwards retaining clips. I love 1A Auto videos, but you really need to edit that since it's so important. It's actually the main reason I wanted to watch the video: Mine were installed backwards by a previous owner and I needed to determine the correct orientation of the clips.

One added recommendation is to lubricate the friction surfaces where the horseshoe e-brake rides. And always always lube the adjuster, application cup, pin, and bore before reinstalling. Also lube brake pad slides. Just like in married life, never put in dry. 😱🤣🤣🤣

Thanks to 1A for the great video & your series of videos. They are very much appreciated 😀 We all know that it is ridiculous to have to go through all that hassle just to adjust the Emergency Brake on the vehicles. But.... I will say it again:. Why GM? Couldn't you engineer something else to fail or require a visit to the Service Dept? This oughta be a 1 minute adjustment....but Noooo😵‍💫....

I am not a mechanic just a DIYer, but it appears the bracket at 4:45 needs to be mounted AFTER the brake shoe assembly is in place instead of before (as shown) so the bracket can be positioned INSIDE the brake shoe assembly to prevent it from rotating.

Thanks, this helped me ensure I was putting mine back together properly. I took them off a while back, and I'm only now replacing them, so this helps verify the memory. I would note that unless you live in the desert of Arizona, the adjuster's screw threads and the outside of the adjustment barrel should receive a coat of antisieze. Here in NE Ohio, they wouldn't function very long.

good video. i adjuste3dmy parking brake on my 2001 Tahoe per your video. the park brake cable still goes to the floor with little resistance, don't want to over expand the shoes or the car will struggle to move and wear out the park brake shoes. there must be some cable stretch problem the car has 230000 miles on it. what should i do

What do I replace on if the cable broke off behind the backing plate of the hub, 04 GMC Sierra 1500. Need that for state inspection.

Here are a few things that I learned from watching many of these videos that helped me with mine. I've had a Yukon and 2 Tahoe's and done the breaks on all of them. 1. When adjusting, use plyers, not a screwdriver. So much easier! 2. When making adjustments, make sure to have the rotor on the other side off while you're doing it. Do the same for both. It removes any 'phantom' resistance you think you might feel during testing. 3. Turn the adjustment dial clockwise (expanding) until you just cannot get the rotor all the way on (don't force it) and then back it out about 2 clicks. 4. Don't forget to grease up all the contact points that the edges of the brake shoe are going to touch. There are 4 points. 5. Don't forget to grease the back of each brake pad and metal clip contact points that hold them when reinstalling. I even put a little grease on the piston rings and boots on the caliper. 6. It's already been pointed out, but the retainer clip in this video was installed backward. Honest mistake, I did it backward too once. With the clip screwed in (don't crank it down too much), the shoe shouldn't move much at all in or out.

Doesn’t the adjuster turn one way for driver’s side and the opposite for the passenger side, as the direction of the vehicle dictates the adjustment? It used to be that after doing a drum brake job, that star wheel tab adjuster would ratchet until firm when braking from reverse, which “automatically” adjusted the drums to the preferred clearance. Of course all of the components needed to be in proper working order. So about the grease on the back of each pad, why is that? Reduce chatter? I could see how on those GM trucks the three clips which fit into the piston could use some “anti-screech” lube for a worst case scenario. But what about the outer pad?

At 4:52 isn't that clip in wrong? It should be flipped around where the clips cradle the contact point of back plate. Just curious.

great video thank you! When I changed mine..one of the retaining clips, the screw was broken. how can I fix that? or how do I get that broken screw out if there is not much space to get to it? thanks or can I use something like J_B weld to retain the clip in place? ??

I know this was 3 years ago.. but in case anyone else sees this... Hammer out a wheel stud. You can then spin the flange and get access to the broken retaining screw through the wheel stud hole. Use a screw extractor as normal. Can even drill and re-tap the hole if you need to. The hard part is putting the wheel stud back in, which you will need a very heavy duty C-clamp for. You can rent a torsion bar unloading tool from your local parts store, which is effectively a VERY beefy C-clamp, and use that with an impact and some spacer blocks to re-install. The alternative is to open up the diff and remove the axle shaft.

My 2002 Camaro has a similar parking brake adjuster. There is a lever on the back side attached to the cable. The lever does not engage the adjuster. It just moves freely from side to side and will not come out and cannot be pushed in. How do you get the lever back in place so that it operates the adjuster?? What holds the lever in place so that it can expand the parking brake??

The lever behind that the cable hooks on is what is broken for me. Unfortunately this part is not found on your web page. The lever moves but does not move the actuator shown here. Any idea where to find that part?

Thanks for the video, I only have a question about it I changed my break pads as well the grum shoe break but the light of the emergency break doesn't turn off did I did something rong i well appreciate if you could help me out

+Valentine Rodriguez Since there could be multiple reasons why you’re experiencing this difficulty with your vehicle, I strongly recommend that you have a reputable mechanic inspect it. They’ll be able to troubleshoot the problem and tell you what part or parts you’ll need for the repair. This could either be an issue with the actuator or something that was done during the shoe installation

I bought a 2005 Yukon, 218,000 miles, and the parking brake cable in the cab was missing so I replaced it. Then I realized the parking brake doesn't engage enough to stop it from rolling from even a slight sloping hill, entirely empty. So something is not working right. How should I confirm what is broken? Are there other components that can fail that would cause the parking brake not to work? Should I disassemble both rear wheel rotors and visually checked it out? Thanks!

Yes it is. I had a intermittent rubbing scraping noise. Came and went. One of the shoes came unbonded from the horse show thing and was floating around in there. ha

I don't know where you guys got your torque specs but I'm positive wheels are 140 ft lbs and I think the bolts for the caliper brackets are 144 ft lbs

You don't have to remove the pads to remove the adjusters. But in case you want more room then remove them, but for me i left them on. Just to much work trying to put them back on.

For the life of me I do not grasp why GM even is using the top aduster into the casing (gear) part in this e-brake???? If the pill gets pushed down with the pull on the cable then what does the top portion do? When I removed my e-brake pad, only half of it was worn, the portion at the non pill side was like new. Does it need to be manually adjusted on ocassion and is not self adjusting?

One addition, make sure you use threadlocker or new bolts for the caliper mounting bracket when reinstalling! They're a known failure point on GMT800s.

You might want to mention to make sure you bend the tabs back in on the dust shield or they will rub on your rotors. Not a good sound.

Can tighten the equalizer block on the rear of the intermediate cable, but impossible to move the adjuster inside on brake shoes without tearing it apart. 😞 sorry. If only that was a possibility.

They make it appear so easy... I replaced all lines that, the brake shoes and STILL the parking brake goes to the floor as easy as hitting the gas pedal. Yes, I've adjust the suckers so much I purposely hard pressed the rotors back on only to find out is still not holding not even enough pressure for an ant to stop moving... What could possibly be wrong at this point?

On that vehicle that wheel is supposed to be torqued to 140! An under torqued wheel is very dangerous.
