I’m type 1 diabetic and have been for 17 years. I have always struggled to put weight on no matter how much I eat. I feel really down constantly and feel different. It’s unreal how hard it is to gain weight
Thank you so much for this video! I am a nurse, but I also have diabetes and I'm watching my body waste away over the last 6 months.. I can only hope and pray my 20% beta cells have not been killed off, but tomorrow I begin an exercise program and cut out the sugar and increase protein intake! I weighed about 160 lb 4 months ago, and now I'm down to about 120 and I just see my entire body wasting before my very eyes and it is scary!! This video has helped to put into context what exactly is going on, and more importantly, what is at stake!!
Are you taking medicine because it sounds like you are. lf you're type 2, you may want to consider, coming off the medication. So you can lower the blood sugar naturally.
I was recently diagnosed with diabetes after noticing I was having frequent thirst, frequent urination and feeling like crap. Went to the doctor that same week and noticed I had lost 20lbs out of nowhere. This video explains why, thank you so much.
Exactly what I was experiencing, went to the doctors then found out I had type 2 diabetes with my FBS at 15mm/l. Had to make serious decisions, changed my lifestyle with no medication and now after 5months my FBS has dropped to 7mm/l. Thanks Dr

Congratulations for the drop from 15% to 7% HgbA1C. My brother lost so much weight, peeing a lot and when he finally went to a medical check up, his hgbA1c was 15 and now taking medication. He is going back in June for another check up. I'm curious what kind of food do you eat now? I believe I could be easily diabetic too because if I do not drink a lot of water during the day and before eating, my blood sugar could go up to over 200. My HgbA1c is good at 5.9% but I'm sure it would be higher if I do not drink a lot of water every day.
is the metformin who do to loose weight am skinny but now am very skinny first was on a half morning night and then 1 night and then 2 morning 2 at nigth but now one morning and one at nigth but tomorrow i will take only at night
The first time I checked my blood sugar level, the result was 22.2 mmol/l. I quickly went to the doctor and he prescribed Metformin and Glibenclamide (sulphonylureas). I had lost about 5kg within 3 months of noticing the symptoms of type 2 diabetes. I was actually insulin deficient and I ate a lot but still lost a lot of weight. According to the doctor, he said metformin prevents your liver from producing glucose and glibenclamide helps your pancreas to produce more insulin and hence regenerates your beta cells to an extent. Within a month of taking the drugs and exercising as well, I had gained an extra 4kg of weight. My blood sugar level had decreased from 22.2 mmol/l to 9.1 mmol/l. I was so impressed with the result so far. I have started lifting weights and I can see a great difference in my general well-being. I'm hoping that, in the next month, my blood sugar level would normalize. Thanks Doctor for the enlightenment.
I have symptoms at the moment my weight loss in 4 months has been about 16kg and dry mouth and thirsty. I'm a bit worried but I'm feeling good so I'm not sure how to take it.
Wow. I was at 248 pounds and I'm now at 167 pounds. I'm not sure what type I have but I'm so scared. I hate when I'm asked about my weight. I feel so hurt. The comments I get are hurtful. Can you help me

Eat sugar or if keto add fat & protein. Talk to your own endo or ask for second & third opinion. Always use discernment when seeking online information and look everything up on your own if it makes sense or not. The new age of mass-shared information is amazing but also anyone had the freedom to say anything online. Good MDs and MDs with old info who work hard but are often too busy to stay on top of all current research. Take it easy and best of luck!
Thank you for this free education about diabetic and losing weight. I've been searching for this since my brother had 15 HgbA1c and lost a lot of weight.
Described the process so well. Could you please add the solution too? I am guessing Keto diet and Intermittent fasting. But are the rules of Keto and IF any different for fat vs normal weight people?
I am type 2 diabetic doc. I'm 5ft and weighs 47 kgs..is it just right or i must gain more. I really want to gain up to at least 50kgs. Can i ask my GP about it?
I was a bodybuilder and later obese at 230 pounds when disgnosed with type 2 diabetes and now i am 170 pounds rapidly losing weight due to musccle loss.I don’t know what to do.
A very strict diet is a must. I went from 200 muscular pounds to 170 in about 3 months. Finally got it under control with low carb and metformin and sufficient sleep.
My 40 year old son has lost 50 pounds and looks like he is on deaths door. Unfortunately he is also bipolar with depression which has already been a life long battle. I’m about to have to live in with him to try to get him on a diabetic diet and hopefully healthier. I honestly fear for his life but he fights against me in every direction and get angry when I say anything about his weight or how he should be eating. I’m trying to get him to let me go to his next doctors appointment but I also have to be careful what questions I ask so he doesn’t get angry. I’m seriously overwhelmed and concerned 😟
It’s like being diagnosed with Diabetes push his depression to an all time low. There are times when he locks me out his house and won’t even talk to me.
Still didn't tell me why having not enough insulin causes me to lose weight, nor how to gain wait. You told me why I need to pee more and drink more if I have high high blood sugar, but nothing about what I need to do to gain weight.
Hi thank you for your video !! My brother has lost over 100 pounds and is a diabetic type 2 . He is exhausted he is weak. We can't find anything to help he is on some medication that you said. What do we do ?? Male 52 175 pounds. Long island ny. Please help. The doctors are not helping !!!
Have you got diabetes dr. ?? Is this from personal experience. I'm doing everything I'm supposed to do with diet and lifestyle. Have lost around 60lbs ... People saying to me I look like I'm dying.. Depression, insomnia, weakness, memory loss.. etc... Not sure what else I can do.. haven't been able to work past 2yrs..
Another great. Would you kindly do one on Creatine Monohydrate Supplementation, this is something I use for weight training. Does it have a positive or negative effect on T1D. Thank you.

My God finally a video that i'm pretty sure explains my situation !! i was diagnosed with T2 last year and have been wasting away ever since . My GP has not taken this seriously and didn't even mention insulin deficiency !! as soon as I was diagnosed I went on an extreme zero carb diet, started taking metformin and got levels down to near normal, but am still losing weight dramatically . What is the solution ? and what should I say to my GP about this on the next visit ? Many Thanks

I've never had diabetes in 70 years of life and had a 5.3 a1c reading in all my blood tests. My daughter was getting married so I decided to lose weight, and through much work, I lost 40 lbs to be 5' 10" 170. I had a yearly physical and my aic was 9.1. My doctor is saying to wait a month for a retest to see if it was a lab error, But why would eating right, exercising a lot and losing weight make my a1c so horrific?
Bro. I used to hike mountains, used to bike 350 miles a week, and work out. I still ended up with type 2 diabetes. Eat all the high fat meats you can. Use olive oil and REAL butter in cooking. You'll never gain weight much, but you can try to live a somewhat normal life, just ever a very active one.
@@nonenone4618 did u eat alot of meT they say thats causing u to block ur cells n pancreas. Is it true? Idk. Ive done low carb highfat n has worked. But many say its lije just taking a break from diabetes. Lately I've seen where u can eat high carbs but have to get rid of meat n fats
Hi, Thanks for the useful presentation. I am having weight loss. Type II DM for 5 years. Taking one tab Linagliptin 5 mg per day. I lost 7 KG wt in last 5 years. Now how can I increase my weight. Thanks
Thank you so much doc ! I have lost so much weight. No one could ever expplained to me why. I have never posted a comment since watching youtube. Thank you so much
Can insulin resistance alone cause unintended weight loss (due to cells not being able to utilize existing insulin) even while insulin levels remain fairly high? Or does it ultimately take insulin deficiency (loss of beta cell function) and lowered insulin to allow for the loss of fat stores in unintentional weight loss? (The reason I ask is that I keep being exclusively pointed to insulin resistance causing a crisis for the cells, which then turn to utilizing fat - regardless of elevated insulin in the body). The subject is wuite confusing for me.
This happened to me. I was never overweight. I hiked, biked, and stayed in shape. I was 44 years old at 220 lbs and 6'3'. I could hike 30 mile with a 50Lbs pack, I could beat most teens at raquetball, I could bike over 100 miles. I got numbness in my thighs and feet. i denied it. Kept my high carb diet because that's what I did. I regret it now. If I had noticed it early, I would not have the nerve damage I have now. I never thought about diabetes, I was never overweight, I still have it now. I denied it and feel the pain of nerve damage everyday, all day.

This video is not “How to gain weight with diabetes If you are underweight” as the title of the video says but rather this video explained why diabetic patients loose weight. MISLEADING TITLE
I've been type 2 for almost 12 months and eat a low carb diet. I take no medication and my a1c ranges between 80 per meal and 100 post meal . I consume less than 20 carbs a day and have lost 102lb , I'm probably 20lb underweight . My weight has levelled out and I've lost no weight in 3 weeks . How do I gain weight without carbs raising my a1c .
@@fatimasc100 possibly, but that could take time for the hormonal system to calm down. And avocados and nuts are full of fibre and nuts especially are hard for some to digest
Any medication that can help weight gain and also help with controlling diabetes? Please suggest and I will talk to my Doctor about that. I am loosing weight because I am on metformin and I was never over weight. Thanks
Why are some beta cells dead while some are paralyzed and can come back? How do you know how much functionality you can get back after returning to prolonged normal glucose control? Also, how long does it take for them to recover or become "unparalyzed?"
Hypoglycemia I've had for 22 years, I had gestational diabetes, my a1c is low but my sugars have been high lately 120s and I urinate and am hungry and thirsty alot. I've lost 35 lbs in 6 months. I come from a long line of diabetics.
Thank you Dr Ergin for making this video. It told me that I am exactly on the pathway to total destruction of my pancreas beta cells. I am a Type II diabetic for years and have lost 20 lbs in the last 9 months. I was on Janumet with Pioglitazone and later switched back to Metformin with Pioglitazone. The A1C is 6.5 but my daily blood glucose fluctuates a lot. You said dramatic life style change and actions will be needed. Can you elaborate that more? Thank you.
I'm also type 2 on metformin. If I don't strictly adhere to a low carb and low sugar diet, along with a low calorie diet, I experience horrible symptoms. It's a daily battle that requires a lot of discipline. Was never obese or out of shape either.
I understand how gaining weight can be a challenge for some with diabetes. It's important to focus on consuming nutrient-dense, healthy foods such as lean proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbs. You might also consider working with a dietitian to create a balanced plan that supports weight gain without spiking blood sugar levels. Stay tuned for more content on this topic!

Thanks Doc for explaining . What about Janumet Xr is that good for pre diabetic? I cant loose my weight despite of reducing. What about Herbal medicine . Are you in favor of that? Pls explain further . What about taking Janemet Xr for almost a yr now . What is the side effect in the body thanks
A recently diagnosed chid of 14 years is having consistent blood glucose levels in 80s and 90 s post meals and it dips further down.. do we reduce insulin ?
Very good explanation on your video.. Question: My understanding is Insulin injections tells your body not to lose fat from fat storage and I can not lose weight . Will lower level of insulin combined with exercise and low carb meals help me to lose fat ? How does a person lose weight with Insulin injection ? I am having a hard time finding information on this questions. I take Human-500 , 70 units 3 times a day , with Novalog. Thank you.
You will need to reduce carbohydrate and animal fat in your diet and exercise more which will allow you to take less insulin. You will need physician supervision
As a type 1 diabetic my body finds it very easy to lose weight especially when I’m In school under much stress. the weight loss is always so drastic and it makes me feel bad because my clothes always don’t fit right anymore. But whenever I’m back home from school there’s always considerable weight gain. And it’s annoying seesawing through the weight gains and loss constantly

Thank you. I'm 6'2 and was at 180lbs. I am now 160. I'm taking Janumet. Would it be beneficial to me to ask my Dr to put me on insulin to gain the weight back? I lost the 20lbs in 2 months (Type 2)
Can any one tell me in just simple English that how to gain weight in type 2 diabetic patient... because I can't understand the English of this doctor.....pls guys tell me
I weighed 175lbs in May I’m down to 128lbs and I’m eating like a horse I have no clue why and I’m scared? Can I plz just get your opinion even though you never seen me? I’m always thirsty and tired not matter how much water I drink or hours of sleep I get. Also I did have a blood test on something not related but it test my glucose and it was 106.
I was 86kg, when i first found out i had diabetes i dropped to 64kg, now I'm at 60kg. My doctor put me on tablets, but i can see i need insulin as well. Im always thirsty and peeing a lot as well. But, how to gain the weight back?
Thank you Dr. I have pre-diabetics and am not on any medication. My weight is keep losing. Now my BMI is around 17. I exercise regularly. You mentioned that a change in lifestyle is needed. What do you mean? Shall I exercise more or less? Shall I eat more protein?
I don’t have diabetes but high triglycerides, blood sugar is fine, cholesterol is also fine. Just triglycerides.. How do I use your guidelines to meet my medical needs?
I have lost 'weight' but it's actually muscle wasting. My A1C is 9.9, sugars are always 170-300. I eat very little, same items everyday. My stomach takes crazy long time to empty and then my insulin doesn't work the same time I eat. I have no idea what to do anymore 😕 Lost so much muscle I'm wheelchair bound.
My best recommendation is to talk with your endocrinologist to get control IQ system with tandem and Dexcom. With this severe gastroparesis it is your best bet. Also make sure you stay on a diet that is helpful for your gastroparesis.
I have the same concern. I am not wheelchair bound yet but I am losing weight everyday and all my muscle mass. My Family doctor put me on zero carbs but its killing me. I have no energy and felt overly fatigue. I consume a very healthy balance meal containing plant base whole food but omitting all the complex carbs altogether is putting me in distresss. Right now im only 102 lbs. I am on Janumet and ozempic
@@imeldamarion9639 Zero carb is very difficult and doesn't bode well with me either, which is why I can only tolerate it about 3 days per week. The other 4 are very low carb though.
I eat carb at morning and noon low carb at dinner with some exercise remising my diabetes from 300 to 120 but with help of medication as well, and reducing neuropathy pain.
I am pre-diabetic. Your video is titled How to gain weight with diabetes. I have lost considerable weight balancing my diet to lower my sugar. Your video did not cover any solution to gain weight. With my weight loss, I have lost a lot of muscle and strength and feel lousy. Any suggestions ?
Hello doc. I have seen a significant weight loss over past 2 years since I was diagnosed with T2. Currently also my A1c is 9. I m on metmorfin ER 2000 mgs. What can I do to gain weight back.
Hi doctor l lost weight with onset of diabetes but slowly regained when I changed from metformin to glimipiride. Few weeks back I lost 7 kilos after I got Omicron also an all time high of 7.3 A1C. Now I am on a diabetic diet plan, my blood sugar level has come down, but have no weight gain with their diet plan. I am 167 cm and ha 63 kilos, now I am only 57.Should I go in for a CPsptide test and pancreas function test to know my real situation?
I Hope that never has to happen to me again. So what do I do to prevent this from reoccurring? My sugar is rising between 3&4 AM from 120 ish to 170 or higher .... with no Midnight Snacks whatsoever.....I don't know what to do is that Okay ? I know you said Dawn Phenomenon but Low Carb and Mediterranean diet and get moving ??? I don't know maybe it is the other Medication that has me not able to lose weight and keeps the Sugar rising at night . Frustrated by not understanding what is going on. Thank you for your help .
same happened to me and i cut out my meat, sweets, dairy and processed foods and switched to whole food plant based low oil , i eat a lot of whole carbs everyday , my lentils ,beans , chickpeas and sweet patato is my fuel ,start my day with oat meal ,fruit and gym and everythings normal without no medication, 70 to 120 glucose and a1c went from 12.2 to 6.6 in just 4 months, also put 2 kgs on after losing 13 . Check out Dr Barnard ,Dr Milton Mills , dr Mcdoughal and dr Khambata for more info . Good luck
