Before I started competing in Strongman, I had no idea what to do. I didn't know how to train, what equipment I needed, or how to sign up for a meet.
This is a quick introduction to starting strongman; the skills that are needed to do well, the equipment that you need to train on, and the organizations that you will compete through.

I would use several kinds of squats: Front squat, safety squats (which force core to work a lot more), back squats (low and high bar), and even overhead squats. I utilize straight and hex bar deadlifts. I also use my hex bar to flip it on the side and lift it off the floor like a TV. That helps me with odd strength improvement.

Awesome video 👍 I’ve recently moved from powerlifting and into strongman and loving it. I use a modified version of swede burns 5th set as my basic barbell program. I’ve removed heavy bench press and replaced it with log power clean. I squat as the speed technique routine. Heavy deadlift and the second bench day is now strict over head press. That’s the basic form of my training, then is event and accessory work. I’m an under 105kg strongman so even us small people can compete in this amazing sport 💪💪💪

Just doing strongman things and watching strongman is fun. It changes things in the gym a bit and hopeful help with overall fitness. I come from track/xc in high school and tennis in college, so not very traditional avenues to strongman. Just a middle age guy who got fat and now wants his body fat and BMI to drop, and not be bored while doing it. I can say I have been less injured from the gym than I have from years of competitive tennis. Titan Fitness has been a help during covid in getting equipment for sure.

I'm not a expert but I also want to be strong without having to compete. I've seen so many videos so what I ate to go from 140 to 175, and still going, is 6 meals a day, with 3 snacks in between breakfast lunch and dinner. The main foods I eat are bread, lots of bread, bagels, pop tarts, lots of eggs, whole milk, avocados, pork patties (frozen ones at local supermarket, very cheap and high in protein and fat), and a lot of peanut butter sandwiches with chips on the side. A little dirty bulking but it's fine as long as you hit the gym and DO CARDIO, dont forget cardio, if not for losing weight then for training the heart to pump blood faster and do better in the strong exercises

@AlexanderBromley
@AlexanderBromley 4 года назад
That's a tricky one. Having a minimum base of strength is required to actually get something out of event training, but my general advice is to not hesitate jumping in because no one ever feels 'ready'. One of our members started strongman before she was very proficient with barbell lifts, but shes very disciplined and put in a ton of time building up her strength base while refining events. She's a pro now and won her division at America's Strongest Man last year. Get event practice when you can, but understand while you're doing it that raising your base levels of strength is priority number one!

If you wanna do both powerlifting and strongman in the same year, how would you program? I mean how ‘bout a basic hybrid program? Or, alternating six weeks 101 for each?
@AlexanderBromley
@AlexanderBromley 4 года назад
It's very easy to run. Strongman programming should emphasize a similar progression of main barbell lifts through the bulk of the cycle, and dial them back 6 weeks or so before the meet as you focus more heavily on events. Find a good linear wave for your main lifts, follow with an accessory or two, then run one basic event. That can be the bulk of your training days. When you peak for PL, cut the events out. When you peak for SM, dial back the main lifts and put the events on one day.

Strongman is fun and can be used for general fitness purposes but, unless you actually want to compete, you don't have to go crazy with event training. If you are looking to get bigger, focus most of your training through the week on compound barbell movements and throw a few moving/loading events in on the weekend. That is the backbone of any good strongman program anyways.

So would someone with an athletic background have a big advantage in the sport? I played sports all my life. I didn't get into heavy weight lifting until last summer. I deadlifted for the first time in december, then took 5 months off and got back into lifting in general last month. I currently deadlift 500lbs, with a goal to get as close to 700lbs as I can by the end of the year. Not sure if all this is worth the time and effort. I seem to naturally be very good at deadlifting, and am currently 270lbs. I feel built for this sport but am behind strength wise getting into it so late. I turn 25 in a few months. Other lifts: 300lbs bench(was 400 for one before I took 6 months off), 400 squat(was 500+ before break), 245 OHP(with leg drive).
@AlexanderBromley
@AlexanderBromley 5 лет назад
Yes, athletics is a huge advantage. Strength is easy to build in anyone, but athleticism has to do with your knowledge of your own body and how it works. That is damn hard to teach later in life. You aren't getting into it late. I'm 32 and I know I have 15 competitive years left before I'll have to dial it back. Plenty of guys have competed at a high level into their 40s and 50s. But here's some insight for someone that's been at it for 15 years: turnover is very high. People come in strong, get excited, then are nowhere to be found in a few years. Going far is going to require consistency you will only get from doing something you love. If you're starting out worried about the time and effort, it might not be your passion.
@TiberiusStorm
@TiberiusStorm 4 года назад
How tall are you? You have a similar build to me from what I can see. I have shorter arms and a longer torso. I was thinking this might make strongman exercises like Atlas Stones difficult for me but it could make other lifts easier like log press. Who knows though!
@AlexanderBromley
@AlexanderBromley 4 года назад
5'10" My short arms definitely make certain events a challenge, but I take pride in knowing I took the time to make some of those my best events. I know that I have to be stronger to put up similar performances, so when I match the more advantaged guys, it's extremely rewarding.

@@AlexanderBromley ow I didn’t even know that there were weight categories but that makes a lot of sense. It’s because I’ve been watching E. Hall, B. Shaw, H. Bjornsson and Stoltman’s videos . They never talk about this and they’re all enormous.

Training is training and starting at the bottom is the same no matter what your goals are. Jump in and start chipping away. If you love it,, you wont recognize yourself in a few years. And if you lose interest and fall off, know it wasn't for you and you weren't going to be around long enough to get good anyways.

Problem with bicep tears is people don't curl so they don't strengthen the muscle directly
@AlexanderBromley
@AlexanderBromley 4 года назад
I've heard claims made on both sides and I'm not sure where I stand. Doing curls will strengthen the tendons, but can also tighten the bicep, leading it to take on the load during movements where the arm should be fully extended. One thing that changed from my tear is that I can straighten that arm out to full extension, where my good arm stops 10-15 degrees short

@bobHAYES21
@bobHAYES21 4 года назад
Basically no sugar, a lot of high caloric food, milk, meat, and try not so much bread. Rice and potato is also recommended. You do not have to eat more proteins than carbo hydrates, because you are trying to be strongmen, not bodybuilder. This is good diet, if you wanna gain weight and power.

Not if you have prior training (other than that of strongman). If not, well it's possible. 10 years, 44 is a good age. Edit: not if you don't* I noticed that whenever someone works out consistently, not only do they gain muscles, but their skeleton becomes wider and denser and that takes A LOT of time and it's very important to have that and unless you already have that, it'll take time (some do thanks to genetics without prior training)
