Great video. Thanks for sharing your method. I'm a backyard hobby beekeeper and I've recently gathered a bunch of material to try making my first batch of beard balm... I'm going to make two different batches. One containing peppermint essential oil, and the other containing lemongrass.. I also want to do similar recipe for lip balm ..

Use a kitchen scale to measure the weight of the liquid poured into the containers. Put the containers on a scale, tare the weight then pour. The wax paper cover is to prevent dust and such from getting into the mix. any of the wood scents. Cedar and/or Pinion pine.

Great video, showing how creamy it is would have been a plus. I've been using Honest Amish balms as a sort of leave in conditioner for daytime use, I have a sort of Billy Gibbons / ZZ Top type of beard that's coarse and tends to get dry. Good luck with your products and I love your cap.

Wax paper helps keep gnats and such out. That is my thought anyway and is why I use it. Brookhaven? I'm in Vancleave.

Tommy, I would be interested in a tin of the "manly" stuff.....I however need the one for unruly beards. At a certain point mine goes all "homeless dude" lookin and I gotta trim it back. I'd like to have a daytime "training balm" and a night time conditioning balm. Have had a beard for most of my adult life and until recently never heard of this stuff....Where have I been! :) Not sure about Patcholi but Cedar for certain.

Have you had any problems with the shea butter crystallizing? I have. So I started placing them in the fridge immediately after the bath. I've found that it comes out so much more pasty and buttery. I like that...

Still making these? Have you developed some other types? Im about to start making my own balms and beardoils now. I also gonna try making a beardbutter. A softer balm for keeping the beard and skin healthy and also keeping the shape.

Our balm is pretty soft...maybe not butter-like, but soft. :-) Yes we still make it and we’re even selling it now on our website! We are experimenting with a “daytime” balm, with a more manly fragrance...something woodsy and outdoorsy...but haven’t settled on a combination of essential oils yet. It will be called “Rich and Rugged.” :-)

Would love to try this ... I haven't found a balm or oil that works yet with my beard .... it's so thick water doesn't penetrate it lol ...... I can hold it under water for a minute and my face is still dry lol .... this looks good .... thanks for sharing ....

interesting. I'd "guess" the balms you've tried were "shaping" balms (though it might not have said that), with a higher percentage of beeswax. I think you'll be pleased with this one. Not too thick at all, and I have no trouble wetting my beard through and through while showering. Of course, as you see in the video, my beard is still a baby. ;-) Thanks so much for commenting, and please let me know what you think of the balm if you try it!

No beard here but I have a question. Is there a chance that the daytime scents suggested attract insects? I can just see my sons getting dive bombed by gnats or mosquitoes! Better yet, which essential oils would act as an insect repellent? This product looks great and I may just give it a go.

ha. that's a GREAT question! Maybe I should try a citronella blend! :-) I'm afraid I'm so new to essential oils, I don't know which would attract and which would repel, but you've certainly got me thinking. thank you for that! yep, pretty simple: take about a dime sized amount, rub together in palms of hands, then work it throughout the beard, making sure it gets down to the skin, too. That's pretty much it!

sure will. trying to find the least expensive way to ship it. I'm disappointed in how much it costs to make it! Looks like we'll have to charge around $10 (or just under), plus another $2.60(ish) to ship one can to a US address. :-(

Hi I just watched this and loved it as usual. You were talking about the rat and the poison you are going to put down and then at the end you mentioned putting the cats in there to catch the rat...I am sure you are aware that the cat would also go for the poisonous bait. I hope ya'll get your rat!

hmm. I haven't seen any recipes online that call for it. Ours seems to last well beyond the time it would normally be used up. Seems to have a good "shelf life" as it is.

that's a great question, but I'm afraid I don't have a definitive answer. :-( If I were in your shoes, I would simply experiment by making batches with a little more wax in each until I found just the right mixture. Sorry I wasn't more helpful

You technically don't have a beard that needs a balm... Balms for the most part are for longer, larger beards to shape and control the hair. You could eliminate the beeswax and just make a conditioning beard butter in larger 4oz tins. Perhaps use some mango butter along with the shea - as it might serve in the role that you are using beeswax much better and maybe consider a blend of carrier oils. Argan, jojoba or sunflower to mix with that sweet almond oil or for straight up silky smooth conditioning butter you could use Kukui and Coconut nut oil.

I hadn't, but perhaps I should. I can tell you, though, that the scent is hardly noticeable once you become accustomed to it, and it's not in the least overwhelming even before you become accustomed. I may have to try a batch with no essential oils and see how it turns out. I suppose it will still have a slight scent, just from the shea butter and almond oil. Good point, sir.

also, at least in the current "night time" version, the scent is not the purpose for the essential oils, though the scent is a pleasant byproduct. The lavender helps me sleep more soundly, and the rosemary is said to encourage growth (according to what I've read). I don't think yours needs much encouragement. ;-)

With the full understanding that your product is your own and potentially entirely different, the only beard balm I tried before wasn't helpful and the scent was unwelcome. Pleasant smelling in the in, tiresome on my face all day. Perhaps I just touch my face too much, as scent would get on my hands, etc. Or I'm just an idiot and using the product wrong - quite probable.

nah, it could've been too heavily perfumed. that would be my guess....perhaps it was purposeful...meant to be a cologne-type thing. the recipe I found (and tweaked to my liking) was manifestly not for all day "perfume." and it makes a marked difference in the softness of my beard, for sure.

How soft/creamy is your balm?.. is it more like a butter/conditioner that doesn't hold/shape the hair? I was waiting for you to touch it in the video so I could see the consistency. Thank you for sharing :)

I should've done that! yes, it's more like butter...I'd say a LITTLE more firm than butter. Because it does have wax in it, it has a LITTLE holding property...but you could always gradually add more wax to get it to the right "hold factor" you're wanting. ;-)

awesome, thank you! If that's what you're after, then I think I would first try the recipe just like I did it. See if you like it. If it's too soft, you could always melt it back down and add a little more wax. In fact, maybe you should make it WITHOUT adding the essential oils for fragrance, until you find the consistency you like - then melt it again (low heat), then add your fragrance. Just a thought.

thanks for that! yeah, I was having trouble at the time where there was a difference in audio levels in my mixer vs the upload. Frustrating!
