Great painting. Boats are really tricky to paint if you are not familiar with how they are built and to their reflexions. For the sake of sanity I will stick to land, but it is always a pleasure to see you make sense of all those complicated shapes. I am very envious of all the natural beauty around you.
I know what you mean Francoise, I had to google 'what is a pontoon' I had no idea what you were painting Patrick until I I googled it. I love the finished painting. And I too enjoy listening to you talk through your painting of course I find that hard to do. I have to stop talking to paint. Keep it up we love watching and listening to you paint.
Patrick - this is one of the best demonstrations I've ever seen, and I have lots of dvds from many famous watercolourists. Watching you, while hearing your intentions was very helpful! Your comments helped me understand what you were doing and why. This is really an exceptional demo - thank you!
Just found your videos and am learning so much. One comment - please don't try to be silent, your narrative is quite helpful. Beautiful beautiful paintings. I understand the challenge of being loose - those details cry out for attention, don't they!
I really enjoyed watching you paint this scene with the boats...the running comment was also very good. I am hoping to learn a lot from you and your still as I am the one with the tiny brush fussing over the details! 😀 Thanks for these videos!
Love your loose painterly approach; fascinating to watch it all come together! This is the style I want to emulate Patrick. What is the beautiful responsive Chinese brush you use? I have many but none are like that one. Thanks for sharing your passion with us!
Hi Dixie just finished my dinner and your post popped up on my Mobile! The brushes I used in that painting were Isabey they hold a lot of moisture and point up well so good for details too., saves you changing brushes so often. Hope that's of some help. Thanks for taking time to comment.
Great painting Patrick. Do you find the clamps better for holding down the painting vs taping it down? Or is this only because your doing fast paintings that you use the clips? Thanks :)
If I was doing serious work for commissions I would stretch the paper first so there would be no movement. For this type of work I find the clips work ok. The weight of the paper i am using is 140lb anything lighter may need taping.
Really good Demo Patrick,I'm afraid my efforts have to last longer than that though! I keep trying the loose, fast approach but I'm wasting so much paper on disasters, maybe I'd get on better with a smaller size?
Bit to hard for me at the moment , I struggle to use my hands and arms due to a spinal injury, but I do love the way and style you paint . maybe once I can get a bit better.
