How to plant pond plants

The most common question I get when it comes to potting pond plants is should they go into gravel or soil. My personal preference is to plant all water marginals, annuals, trailing and submerged plants into grave. Generally Things like lotus and water lilies will perform much better in soil. Hope this video helps you decide how to plant your water plants.

I've just made my Aquascape pond from the remains of my previous pond. My previous pond and shallow bog were ruined by plants I could not control. The irises spread rapidly all over the bog. I could pull them out at first but it became increasingly difficult to do so because their roots actually grew through the liner. I ended up having to hire a mini-excavator to pull the whole bog out. The pond was ruined by bacopa. It just grew like crazy! I kept pully out handfuls but, a week or so later, it was all back with avengeance! Can you please make a video (or even just a post) recommending some deep marginals (i.e. planted just under 30cm deep) that aren't so invasive and aggressive? I'm in Adelaide so have a similar climate to you.)
@Ozponds
@Ozponds Год назад
I don’t plant many plants in the bog. I do like bacopa though. It’s vigorous in growth and shallow roots. I never use any deep rooting plants in the bog. I’m pretty sure I have a bog plants video. But I’ll mention somethings I use in a few weeks. I’m putting together a video on my latest bog.

@@Ozponds, yeah, I don't have a bog in my new Aquascape pond. I was looking for plants to go on the plant shelf of the pond itself (about 30cm deep). I'm thinking, maybe, Rotala, Water Ribbons, Ribbon Weed, Upright Water Milfoil, and Ludwigia. 🙂

I’ve set up a patio micro-pond (in hopes it inspires a larger pond in the future). I’m currently experimenting with various plants from my aquarium. I would like to add a small water lily such as the Lil Sue. How much soil would you put in a small pot for a smaller species water lily?

Great information for this new koi pond owner. Beautiful, crystal clear water. Wow! Any suggestions on plants that can tolerate quite a bit of shade that can be planted in gravel? Also, what gravel works best in your experience? Thank you!
@Ozponds

Impatiens for shade. Just on the margins. The best gravel is the cleanest gravel. Dirty gravel adds nutrients which can cause algae problems.
@Mustangmom2k

I can vouch for impatiens! When I first heard about growing them only in water, I didn't believe it. But I tried it and wow! Planted in early May (I'm in the US), by late August, those things are gigantic 4-foot balls of flowers. I buy the 6-packs of small ones, rinse all the dirt off the roots, put them in a little aquaponics pot, and set them along the shallow edges tucked in the rocks. Although impatiens are really shade plants, I find that mine don't seem to mind the hot afternoon sun for 4 or 5 hours, I guess because their roots stay cool in the water. We have many fish, so the water is naturally fertilized. I've been doing this for 5 years now and I absolutely love them!

When you say “into the gravel” I’m a bit confused - our pond (that we inherited with our house) has a plastic pond liner at the bottom - do you add gravel on top of the liner and then plant the plants into the gravel? Or do you not have a liner? Sorry, probably a stupid question!

Kev, Are there pond plants we should avoid putting directly in our ponds? Specifically my concern is a root system penetrating the liner. Thanks!

I’ve heard of cattails penetrating liner. Often it’s the plants outside the liner that hunt the water, come in over the top of the liner and pull it down overtime, which creates a leak.

It’s a great plant at removing nutrients, but it grows incredibly quick. Goldfish and koi will eat it. If you add it you’ll most likely have it forever, so make sure you really want it.

I’m a bit confused.. the big pot will act as a pond and it has a big hole in the middle. Then you’ll insert the smaller pot into the hole? Won’t the water just empty out the gaps? Or is the pot and the hole such a perfect fit that it’s super tight and won’t leak? If that’s the case I’d still add a fish safe silicone to prevent any seepage.
