I'm glad you thought of this work-a-rounds. It's always nice to save some extra money and trade that for elbow grease. Good information, good presentation.

I ripped mine off and tossed them in the metal pile went with progressive coilovers man totally worth the $300

A lot of people like them, if this did not work that would be my next option!

@octanerestorations I can't see how lol adding the progressive coilovers in back and progressive springs up front you can literally whip these bikes in corners like sport bikes tires wear better and everything this would be great for someone trying to get something on the road cheap then do the upgrades later great video 1st one I seen on rebuilding them air shocks

When I rebuilt my rear shock, I took a small screw driver and tapped the back up ring up in the shock to help remove the retaining ring. after i had the retaining ring and back up ring out, took compressed air and a blow gun and pushed the seal out the bottom with air thru the inlet at the top of the shock. after I had the shock back together I took a small syringe and injected the fluid thru the air port at the top of the shock. the oem boot is still available for around 50.00

I imagine that would have been easier! I could not find a tutorial for this anywhere, even the old forums, so I just went off of the Honda manual!

My service manual only says take it to a dealer for the shock service.@@octanerestorations

I did the same method as you with the screwdriver. Got the snap ring out in less than two minutes.

@@octanerestorations Hea, just wanted to let you know I recently had the back tire off recently to replace it and noticed the rubber "bellows" on the shock was mostly deteriorated. Replaced it with the one you recommended. Saved me good money my man. Thanks.

@@rickdff62 Happy to hear it, I love being able to save a little here and there. These bikes may not be worth a ton of money, but OEM and replacement parts can add up quickly so I enjoy finding great fixes that are easier on the wallet! Thanks for the update and comment!

Just finished and everything went great!! A note about my 1995 gl500 ( If it hasn't been replaced) The guide bushing is a permanent piece of metal with two open slots on the side for fluid movement.. Does not get removed... Thx again Octane!!

@@godzillla6968 this one was an 88, and there are a few subtle differences. Glad everything went well, figured since a video did not exist I would make one, glad it helped you Godzilla! Thanks for watching!

When installing the shock boot, maybe a bit of lubricant should have been used to make it slide over the shock! Seems pretty easy to repair. Hopefully it lasts. I have to do my rear shocks on my 1988. Not holding the air at all.

This one was an 88 so it should be the same method! I thought about doing that, but I was afraid grease would attract dirt so I opted against it! Thank you for the comment!

Will this prevent the air from leaking out? My gl500 rear shock leaks down and the bottom of the shock isn't wet.

You might not have the correct amount of fluid in there anymore, or it might be leaking from another place. I would spray around with soapy water to check for leaks!

Where can I get the parts

I got the air shock gasket off of partzilla! And the ATF is from any auto parts store!
