How to remove a duramax turbo(or install)

**Warning: This job is not for beginners. The turbo gets very hot and causes corrosion to happen early even in arid climates. The fasteners and bolts on the turbo and the manifolds can be extremely difficult to remove. Use a torch to heat up and ice cool down fasteners that won't budge. Get a feel for the system and components that will need to be removed before starting the job**
My truck has a 6 inch lift which gave me very nice access under the front wheel wells. You may not have the same access.
Pulled my turbo because I was getting a stuck turbo engine light p003a. Took it apart and cleaned it properly after half attempting to clean it with grill cleaner. I made a video on how to clean it but i filmed it up and down but if enough people want me to upload it I will. This truck is a 2006 LBZ.
I would not recommend following any video on cleaning the turbo where you smash the actuator with a hammer. My turbo was completely filthy with soot and rust (truck from Oklahoma), it is not something a hammer will fix. Just take the time and do it right.
I dont include some of the most basic tasks that need to be done to complete this job like removing the down pipe and some other things, however, those are very obvious in my opinion and if you cant figure out how to do the basics here without my help you should not attempt this job yourself. This video is in the reverse order because there were no decent videos on how to do this when I made it, it was a trial and error process and I learned along the way.
Thank you for watching!

Thx Mike for this Video., Having some resistance to the Downpipe off the back of the turbo on the passenger side. The band is off but I think it is stuck in the recess casting on the back of the turbo. So this pipe has a flange on both ends with a band that connects them. Are there any other bolts holding it in position. There is a bracket down low near the exhaust connection that I loosened. So I did not quit but used a jack from the bottom and a 20" long piece of 2x3 wood and then i used a block of wood and a 5lb. small sledge hammer to jar it loose. It was the recess into the turbo that is about 1/2" deep that was the resistant to success. Wow! this is not easy...minute 3:07 on the video shows this recess. Thx again Mike for this Video.

Thank you so much for watching I am glad this video helped you. Once you get the clamp off, there is nothing else holding it besides rust. Try to use a chemical to free the rust like Kroil or PB blaster. Use a hammer to tap the flange of the down pipe you are trying to remove and it will bust free.

You need some magnetic sockets in your life bud . I have a set of cornwell 1/4 drive and they're amazing with a hex/ bolt stop(prevents socket from sliding into socket) , light tension spring and built in magnet 🧲 i think sanppy has a line also

Set the turbo on a flat surface and put your 4 mounting bolts in the base . That way the bottom of the bolt is flush with the bottom of the turbo base. Hook a rubber band on one side from bolt to bolt and the same on the other side. It will hold all 4 bolts in place for install. When you get it in place cut the rubber band and the bolts fall into place. Just tighten them up. This works great on the 7.3 also.

Thanks Mike for this video. Really helped out. For future removers - you can access the driver side upper up-pipe bolts from the p-side wheel well with a 1/2 ratchet and long pipe. Easy Peasy!

Billy Higginbotham No problem I wanted to clean my turbo the right way and I couldn't find a single decent video. Honestly one of the hardest parts was taking the turbo heat shield off. I had to leave it back there moving it around and out of my way till the turbo was out and I threw it right in the trash! Good luck and stay patient. let me know if you have any questions.

the first to add any comment.... Both plastic wheel wells must come out for easier access to the up and down pipe and transmission dipstick? Should the front fenders come off too? Did you have to remove both ends of the left and right up pipes?
@mmichaud08
@mmichaud08 7 лет назад
EZ570 You only have to remove the wheel wells. the passenger wheel well for access to the dipstick and the down pipe. the driver side wheel well gives you optional access to the drivers side up pipe where it connects to the manifold. You only have to completely remove the drivers side up pipe. If you don't remove it the oil drain line will not come off of the studs.

Hi. I Will have tout do this net winter. Dealer and a diesel specialist both told me it takes at least 11hours to remove and reinstaĺl the turbo. They also told me i have to raise the cab from thé frame to pull the turbo out. I have a 2006 2500hd 4wd. Can you confirm this?
@mmichaud08
@mmichaud08 7 лет назад
PatPY23 I did not need to raise the cab. You will need to remove wheels and tires unless your truck is lifted.

Did any of your up pipes break off im about to do up pipes im going to soak with kroil
@mmichaud08
@mmichaud08 6 лет назад
063rdgen 2500CTD Kroil is what I used. Be patient. Stay on the bolt head as square as possible. Be ready to heat them up red hot and put ice cubes on them. Spent about 4 hours on a hand full of the drivers side up pipe bolts. Sheared one off on the exhaust manifold and had to weld a nut onto it.

Esteban Cantu take a good look at the mating surfaces and make sure you replace any gaskets or washers they are quite fragile especially if the got over torqued.

hey mike did you go through the passenger side wheel well or the driver side wheel well for the drivers side up pipe bolts. the drivers side up pipe bolts are being a pain for me.
@mmichaud08
@mmichaud08 7 лет назад
Sorry for the late reply! I have been in the Rockies all week. The drivers side up pipe is a pain in the ass you just have to have to break them free using Aerokroil and a breaker bar or just a socket wrench with a small pipe on it for extra torque. I got the up-pipe to turbo bolts from on top of the engine and i got the up-pipe to manifold bolts from the wheel well and underneath. I snapped a manifold bolt even after heating with a torch and I had to torch it like crazy and weld a nut onto it to get it out so be careful down there.
