In this video, we're going to show you how to adjust idle on your Royal Enfield Himalayan. This is an important step if you want to keep your engine running smoothly in the tough conditions that may lead to stalls.
As we wait for the snow to stop outside so we can actually ride the motorcycle up in the mountains, this is the perfect opportunity to do minor adjustments and repairs on the Royal Enfield Himalayan.

Another tip (which you did) - starting with the tank near empty helps.

Absolutely a great call! And, it worked out that way from the last ride. I was surprised there was as much in there as there was. Gauge was near empty. Thanks!

I really thank you for this video. I wasn't able to enjoy my bike without it stalling constantly due to too low idling RPMs, but I did just the same that you did and voilà... 1200 beautifully constant RPMs...

FWIW, you may want to check/adjust the throttle position sensor voltage first, while you’re at it. Leuheanrede and TheSmoaksVlogs have good videos about that. It took me a few idling adjustments after some riding to get it where I wanted it (1250 +/- 50), which I did by just propping up the rear of the tank and used a stubby regular head screwdriver, as already mentioned by someone else. The TPS adjustment made the biggest difference for me in preventing stalling when warming up.

Hey thanks! Its a good suggestion. I am about to do an oil change so, I'm gonna hopefully do it all at once. Snowing like crazy outside, so, I still have time. Thanks!

Hah! I’m really beginning to doubt it. I was telling someone else we are at almost 200% of the normal snowpack! It is insane. And we’re next door to the desert. Thanks!

Excellent video, I've got to take the tank off to adjust the valves and fit the Fuelx Pro so I'm going to increase the idle. I'll let you know how it's running once everything is done. I have to get a few more miles on it and then I'm going to do the first service, I do all the servicing myself on the Interceptor so the Himalayan should be a piece of cake. Ride safe

Awesome! I really enjoy messing around with the motorcycle. It is pretty darn simple. Love to know how it ends up!

I've heard these plug and play gadgets don't really improve performance. Apparently tec performance cam can improve torque. Have a look at nathan the postman 🇬🇧
@paulstoker7650
@paulstoker7650 Год назад
@@jamespegram8843 I'm not trying to increase performance, I'm enabling the bike to run cooler, the Fuelx Pro combined with the other modifications will achieve this. I've already done this work to my Interceptor so I have first hand experience of the end results. The bike runs cooler, response is better and the little bit of extra torque is a bonus.

@@paulstoker7650 👍 unfortunately modern environmental friendly fuel injection systems are not easy or cheap to tweak , but rest easy the Himalayan is a good bike.. I've got a 650 continental as a weekend toy. Now if you fit that engine into a himi frame .... 🇬🇧👍

Thanks for showing how to make the idle adjustment. So far mine idles well at 1200 but should any stalling issues emerge I'll know how to tackle something.

I've done this without removing the tank. Just propped the back end up on a small wood block, and used a small screwdriver to make the adjustment. It's not as roomy but still possible to do without all the tank bs.

You’re right. I was so focused on getting a video of the idle adjustment screw I didn’t even cover that. Good points. Thanks!

The two pipes under the tank, the one with the clip on is the fuel tank breather. The one with out at clamp is a water drain for under the filler cap , there is a small hole under the filler cap, if the pipe or the hole get blocked when you open filler to refuel any water gathered there goes into the fuel tank. Had is pipe knipped up on my himi from new. It's easy to check. Undo the 2 tank bolts. Lift the tank up Follow down the pipe with no clip and blow up it. Jobs a gooden no water in your fuel..👍🇬🇧
@swcoloradoadventures
@swcoloradoadventures Год назад
Hah! Thanks James! Appreciate the detailed explanation. I got the breather part right. Maybe I should research more… or, the real goal is to ride and not necessarily demonstrate my “mechanical expertise”, or lack thereof. Great info for me and those watching. Thanks!

👍bought my first off road bike in 1977 at the age of 14 on the back of driving a tractor on a local farm. Learnt mechanical skills the hard way. If I can pass on hard earned knowledge it's a pleasure. 🤓🇬🇧

I tweaked mine just a *little* higher and it has made cold starts a lot better. But I’m in Bama, so no snow for me 😊
@swcoloradoadventures
@swcoloradoadventures Год назад
I wouldn’t imagine. It definitely helps with that. Our snowpack is almost 200%. By far the most we have had since we have lived here for the last 12 years. And all because I wanna ride in the mountains. Ugh. Thanks!

A little Tip, make sure the engine is warmed up to operating temperature or after you get it hot it will be revving to high at idle.....
@swcoloradoadventures
@swcoloradoadventures Год назад
That’s a good thought. It might end up too high. Halfway through the last ride at a water crossing is when I decided I wanted a bit more and it was around 1100. I’ll keep an eye on it. I’m used to the lower the better. Thanks!
@DJPTEXAS
@DJPTEXAS Год назад
@@swcoloradoadventures Yea, I only say that as my bike will idle a lot higher after a long highway run and it is hot but meanwhile it was around 1000-1200+ when colder .. ( if it doesn't stall ! Lol... ) 1500 is about right when hot...

Why are you taking the tank off to adjust the idle? I remove seat and 2 bolts at the rear of the tank. Then just lift the rear a couple of inches. Then I just turn the air bleed screw on the throttle body. The left hose is the drain if you over fill the tank. The right hose is to the charcoal canister and is the vent for the tank. The way that screw works is; As you open the screw it lets more air past the throttle plate and the fuel injection is told to add fuel. The Throttle Position Sensor should be checked for correct adjustment prior to adjusting idle.
@swcoloradoadventures
@swcoloradoadventures Год назад
Good points for sure. It was the “old mechanic friend” recommendation for the first time I did it. Thanks for the description of how it all works as well. You’ve obviously done it a time or two. Thanks!

Point taken though, I changed the title to how to remove tank and adjust idle. Would have been hard to give a good visual without that. Good stuff!
