Drum Brake Shoe Replacement Video Part 2: • 1999 Chevy Tahoe Rear ...
This is a request that I was happy to be able to fill. I've been looking for a wheel cylinder job for over 2 years and this Toyota finally provided me the opportunity. As you can see it's not a bad job at all to do provided that things come apart as they did in this video. If they don't come apart like that then follow the recommendations in the video of how to deal with those situations. Don't worry about bending the brake line it's a lot better than twisting and possibly breaking the brake line, once you do that there's no going back. Also make sure to use a line wrench when breaking the brake line loose, if not you could round it off and that would also not be good. Thanks for watching, I hope the video helps you should you have to replace a wheel cylinder on your vehicle.
Stay dirty

Eric, your old videos are so good for us guys that are relative newbies to car repair. Your new videos are more advanced and that is good too, but I love your old videos from 6 to 8 years back. So amazing. Like taking shop class at high school, but better.

Thanks for the info! Especially all of the tips throughout. Knowing that this can be accomplished without removing the shoes - super helpful when it's February in Chicago, every minute saved counts! The dealer wanted $400 to replace the cylinder and flush all of the lines, I was able to do it in my garage for $14 in less than 2 hours. Thanks for all you do!

Hey Eric just a quick tip pull both the drum cases off and pull the hand brake on that will give you so much room you'll just pull the cylinder straight out of there I know some people hate this idea but it's fine there is nothing wrong with it and in my countless years of experience iv never had or seen a problem with it and I teach this method to all of my apprentices

HI Eric, thank you very much for the pro tip! When I tried to replace the wheel cylinder today, I noticed that the brake line screw was very rusted, and the brake like seems to be turning a little bit even with a flare wrench, which of course I only bought because of this video too. So I stopped at once, and then unscrewed the wheel cylinder counterclockwise until it came off. Then when I installed the new one, I also spin the wheel cylinder clockwise on. Luckily it seems that only a small piece of paint at the end of the brake line broke off, which I will touch up with paint later after making sure there is no leak. Thank you so much!

My ghetto skills came in handy when I came up with the brilliant idea while looking for a bolt, I cut up a piece of wood instead and used that to jam between the shoes. Worked perfectly to space out the brake cylinder. Of course hats of to you for showing me how to deal with the pipe, I end up rotating the cylinder as suggested and a job well done. I wish I read the comments though as people suggested blow torch and insta cool down to shock lose the fitting. It's ok I think I want to redo all the lines anyway and fit that hydo wand

Nice, glad I found this as I just discovered one leaking on my wife' 96 Corolla after having to add brake fluid every couple of weeks for a few months now (finally got under the back of the car last night to have a looksie after changing the oil.). I'm sure this car is pretty much the same process as our car. Saw a complete drum brake kit on Rockauto with new drums, shoes, wheel cylinders, and all the various clips and springs, for under $80. Not sure if I should get that or not. I don't recall the rear brakes ever being serviced, not in the 9 years I've known my wife, and the car has 267K miles on it.

Don't forget people. The brake line connections are different threads (American vs European), Different connections (bubble or inverted), different materials for brake lines (soft rust resistant vs steel), different grade tools for making your own flared ends (cheaper vs superior), different tube diameters.... its a learning curve, and don't forget you can just get the pre-made line many times. Good luck everyone.

My nephew told me about your channel. You’ve been a great help on many auto repairs! My problem is I’m no mechanic! 🤫😵‍💫 I put brake shoes on my daughters car and in doing so I blew both back wheel cylinders. First question: I bought two off brand cylinders from AZ. Can I be comfortable that I can trust them? Second: I called Toyota and for a price to just have them replace the two cylinders. Service told me it would be $1300.00 😮 because one is a master cylinder. I thought the Master Cylinder was under the hood where you add fluid. If what he said is actuate, Is there something special I need to know/do other than what is in your video? Third: in what order do I bleed the brakes on this car? I was told some cars have a different sequence . It is a 2007 Toyota Corolla CE Again, Thanks for the help and all your videos!

SHIT, as you said I am hating my life at the moment shredded my brake line at the tip, was really stuck in there and the last person to work on it stripped the head of the brake line. I can't believe that I didn't watch your video first I have been watching a lot of them this week. I would've never broken it if I had've just spun the wheel cylinder off, and I'm kicking myself because the thought crossed my mind. What's my next step man

Great video! I'm trying to replace the brake cylinders on my 91 F250. I purchased what is listed as the approved driver and passenger side replacement cylinders for the vehicle. However when I went to install the new cylinder on the driver side (all shoes, springs, and brackets removed as well), I noticed that when the cylinder is seated into its position, the dust shields are squeezed somewhat on both ends of the cylinder against the back plate. They don't appear to be free from "interference" as yours seems to be in the video. Any thoughts? Am I missing a spacer? Do I need to retrofit a different model cylinder? Much appreciated.

The lost art of rebuilding stuff.... I understand that it doesn't cost much for a wheel cylinder as I helped Rob change the ones on his truck, then he had me rebuild one so that I would know whats all involved and how it works... Also helped him make entire brake lines... I now would rather rebuild even the simplest thing if I can because it's a lot more fun and I can honestly say I did it!!!! . Merrie

Eric, but if your brake line is spinning with the nut, alternatively is to pull out-forward the wheel cylinder a bit (while the line is still connected to it with the nut) and spin the entire wheel cylinder off. Do I then need to take off completely the brake shoes system to get enough clearance for this action?

Another trick I use when dealing with rusted line fused to nut, I use propane torch to heat the fitting, then after its heated, I take to spray water on the heated fitting, this I'll call shocks the joint, where the fitting and line were fused. I sometimes have to reheat and spray with water a few more times, but thats an old school trick that works great, also works good for seized bleeders.

I'd suggest also looking under the plug in the brake line hole to see there is actually an orfice for fluid to pass into it. I've seen a number of wheel cylinders that weren't drilled deep enough and just dead ended. Saves you the pain of trying to figure out why it wont bleed or work just to have to do the job all over again.

Another tip after using the penetrant. is to clean the penetrant off the castellated nut, the lubricant will help strip the nut. so clean it off and I always use "EZ-grip" compound on those nuts to ensure a secure grip and prevent stripping of the nut.
