Step by Step!
Today we'll be working on a Cub Cadet snow blower with a PowerMore 420cc (690-WUA) engine.
This came into the shop for repair because a squirrel or mouse chewed through the spark plug wire.
In order to fix this, the ignition module (sometimes referred to as a coil) will need to be replaced.
To replace this part, the plastic carburetor cover, and metal flywheel cover will have to be removed.
I'll be taking you through each step, from disassembly and replacing the ignition module, to reassembly.

Good Video. I have one with the 357cc Very important to use 3X shear pins. I learned the hard way. I tried to cheap out with 2X pins. They snap way to easy. Jake I know you know but for someone reading posts. It's good info. Thank you neighbor to my North.

I plan on doing a video on this, the manual for a 3 stage snowblower identical to this one calls for a 738-04124A in both the auger fins, and the 3 stage accelerator fins. That part number is actually the 2 stage shear pins. I couldn't believe it, but the illustrated parts listing showed #7 for all the shear pins. They were listed as all being the same. I wanted to do a video and get the info out there, and get a discussion started, as even my MTD rep wasn't sure what the difference in the pins were. I assume, like you, there's a difference in shear strength. I'm looking into it with the MTD tech department, and will have a video posted within the next couple weeks!

note that the 420cc engine on the smaller 26" blower is exclusive to Canada. it's one hell of a cc-to-width ratio, eh? :D
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance Год назад
Yes it's a beast, but only available in 3 stage which I personally dislike. If they offered it in a 2 stage I would've considered buying one. Other than that, I'd highly recommend the 2x 30" MAX as it has the 14" impeller (same size as the Ariens commerical units)

Cub Cadet gets a bad rap from several RU-vid small engine mechanics but I really like a lot of the snow blowers that MTD makes. What are your thoughts about MDT products????🤔 Keep up the good work by the way. 😊👍🏿
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance Год назад
They have very simple designs for the drive system, and everything comes down to personal preference. Ariens professional series are the best snowblowers on the market, oversized impellers, actual bearings instead of bushings, all steel construction, very little plastic. MTD and Husqvarna have tried the cheap method, but unfortunately those are the best selling units which break the most, and therefore gives them a bad name.

This is the Old Man at Eliminator. Jakes comment below is right on but the Cub Cadet snowblowers are good machines. I personally do not like the 3 stage i think they are overkill and not many know there are 3 stage shear pins and 2 stage shear pins.

@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance Год назад
@@donmayberryjrsOPE Honda snowblowers are like the Cadillacs of snowblowers, and they have their own exclusive issues just like Cadillacs. They have hydrostatic transmissions that blow seals due to moisture build up and then it freezes and expands. They also have expensive parts that you can only purchase through a Honda dealership, and in my area it's far out of the way and they're very expensive and hard to deal with. Unlike a typical snowblower where I can run any brand of raw edge v belt as long as the size is correct, Honda uses their own special sizes in most machines. Makes sourcing parts a bit harder, but they are great reliable machines is maintenance is kept up.

Hey, Jake! I would like to know why there is such disparity between various machines’ air gaps. A Stihl saw would have a spec of exactly half the dimension of this Cub Cadet. Does the electrical charge produced vary that much between various coils or what? Does the actual dimension really matter as long as there is free space for the flywheel to rotate? Also, I set air gaps slightly differently and my method seems much easier. I tighten the coil mounting screws down just enough to hold the coil in place as far away from the flywheel as possible. I then rotate the flywheel into position and insert my gapping tool. Then I loosen the screws and the coil is pulled right into position for torquing down. Much easier than struggling with rotating the flywheel into position while holding the gapping tool in position and keeping the coil free at the same time.
@waynestefinashen239
@waynestefinashen239 Год назад
Basically Jake and i use the same method you do to install the proper air gap. Different coils require the proper air gap they are engineered for to obtain the maximum amount of spark required for ignition. Some replacement coils actually inform you that if the original oem spark plug was an rj19lm that you must switch to an rj17lm which is a colder plug.
@Rein_Ciarfella
@Rein_Ciarfella Год назад
@@waynestefinashen239 Thanks, Wayne! That explains it and was what I suspected. Same probably holds for spark plugs - different gaps for different plugs or from different manufacturers, although there does seem to be a lot of debate about that.

Hi Jake. I have a Craftsman Model 536.881851, Briggs Engine 15A114-0342-E1. There's a red wire with a female connector like in this video. It is not connected to anything, and I cannot figure out where it should go. It is coming from behind the electric start. I see there is an alternator in the Briggs diagram that appears to have the connection, but I don't want to take all that off if it's not where it goes. Can you tell me where it should go and if I need it.? I know this is a lot to ask but I thought I'd try. Thanks, Jake, for any input.

Question.. I watched your video on snowblowers and I went to buy gearbox grease at Cdn Tire (Stens 00) and the worker and myself couldn’t locate it.. where do you get the grease and is there a weight in viscosity that is comparable? Thanks bro.
@waynestefinashen239
@waynestefinashen239 Год назад
Pete just saw your comment hope this helps: We have an account with Stens in Brantford and because we have an HST registration number we are able to purchase Stens products but i just found out they no longer carry the 00 grease WOW. Alternatives available which we will also need to find distributors are as follows: Ariens L3 Synthetic Gear Lube, Napa Prime Line SME706612, Ecklers 57-376792, PRI 7-06612 O'Reilly. I have also had some mechanics tell me that you can take an NGLI 2 grease and mix it with a compatible oil to an applesauce consistency and use that but only as a last resort. If you have ever taken a snowblower gearbox apart you will see that the original grease installed was white lithium which is a low temperature grease but over time this grease gets pushed off to the sides and does not keep the brass gear properly lubricated thus the need to add 00 grease. In some instances the blower gearboxes do not have an opening to further lubricate the gearbox but these are normally older snowblowers. Hope this helps!
