@@SC-oi9wp It's a mixture of both. The world may have dealt you a bad hand, given you problems or unfair situations. But ultimately it's up to you to see how you handle those awful things. You could give into blaming others, feeling sorry for yourself, or thinking "Why me?" And there isn't anything wrong with that. You deserve to feel that way initially, because the world hasn't been kind to you. But are you going to let those thoughts dictate whether or not you have a happy, fulfilled life? Personally, I'm choosing not to. Even stuff that isn't really "my fault", I'm trying to take extreme ownership of, and take ownership of solving those problems. It can be a tiresome and hard path, but it's worth it.

I am so glad to see this video. I was feeling resentful after a disagreement with a good friend. I went outside to cool off. When I came back, I watched the video. I laughed when you said the acronym. Im going to practice using it when I get mad so I can laugh instead! Im watching your videos to learn to communicate less aggressively. I want to change my confrontational communication behavior. It's pushed a lot of friends away. I want to have better relationships.

Wow this was so insightful, I’ve made some changes and my life as well as changes outside of my control have come to me, including reaching my 30s, and I have felt like it takes very little to get me feeling frustrated, impatient, fed up… I know it’s not right or necessary, or healthy, or graceful… it lacks class and I’d even say maturity. Which is why we’re all watching this video, looking for teachings about this irritability. Thank you!

This is the best video on this problem I've seen. I have someone who knows how to push my buttons it seems, but after watching this video, I see that I need to take steps not to let this happen, to avoid some situations and to let what may happen unexpectedly to roll of until I can get away and think through the situation. What I may need is less time with this person until I can ignore the triggers. Thanks so much!

Flavor Town, the first step is in recognizing the feelings and then when you begin to feel them, stop for a minute and figure out why you are feeling that way and how you can change your perspective. You can do it.

I just want to be ok, not getting so mad or angry so quickly over little things. I tent to think things should be perfect, and when they are not perfect, all I take away is that I have failed. Like a 100 question test. If I get 1 wrong, I fail. It sucks, it is miserable. I have a beautiful wife and 3 loving children. I love my family more than anything. I am here trying to find ways to be the man they deserve. Thank you for this little tip video, I hope I am strong enough to do this and not just take the easy path of living how I have been. Thank you.

2:38 I totally agree. It works. 2:54 It's beautiful. It's all about perspective. Irritability has been my largest downfall these days. I have a lot of stressors in my life that I inherently want to see changed or controled, but they themselves are things that can't even control themselves (housing market while selling) or people who refuse to change (alcoholic family). I try to remind myself of who they are to me, or that it's an uncontrollable situation, and how I just want the best for everyone involved. Overall, humor is a good immediate time-out cure for this particular situation and in this particular context because _at the very least_ I was able to focus on the fact that my goal is to remember and adjust to the aforementioned things (who people are, uncontrollable situation, wanting the best).

I recently stopped smoking tobacco and marijuana after 10 years of use and suffer from irritability everywhere i turn then get anxiety or sometimes a panic attack.. taking the time out definitely helps me get focused and back on track

I often think my internal anger is my fault. From overcoming an addiction to pain meds to refusing to return to antidepressants. I feel I have permanently messed something up with my brain chemistry and I can't find my way back to feeling "normal"

This is important and impacts your future in a major way - if you haven't already, respectfully ask your family to allow you an hour or 2 of quiet study time during the day. You may also need to get creative - like finding peace and quiet in your front or back yard, or perhaps a park or other spacial outdoor area.

I get angry very easily when somebody smacks their lips but at the same time I watch asmr but I get vvv angry when my sisters/mom do it and i start to cry from the anger please help

It doesnt help that a lot of my irritability stems from the fact I have mild autism. I have the trouble learning, and irritability towards specific things type of autism. My thing is I am great at handling some stressful situations. Situations that would anger people. But I pop my lid at things most people dont think twice about. Such as the mouth noises people make when eating or something. I think I struggle with narcissistic tendencies as well. But I need to learn to control my temper and fight like hell to overcome my weaknesses. Because man its really burdening myself along with the people I love most in my life.

How do you get a grown son to see he needs to work on himself. It's not mine or anyone else's fault that he is always irritable or frustrated. I can't send him this video. He wouldn't even give it a chance. He would just be offended. I get to the point I don't want to be around him. His mad moods, rude and snide remarks puts me and those around him in a bad mood. I would tell him I don't want to see or hear from him until he could treat me more respectfully no matter what his mood is but then he wouldn't let me see my grandkids.

I love this so much because you explain it so calmly, clearly, and with a wonderful example. But why did it have to end so soon? I wish you explained more about the steps we should take after breathing deeply. Like perhaps what could heal us of that "victim mentality" and "blaming others" syndrome. Anyway, it was good regardless and thank you for helping me to see that I need to take control of MY reaction rather than expecting someone else to change, apologize, or be sorry for what they did. Because that's not going to happen any time soon. Thank you soooo much! God bless you soooo much!

i’m usually not an irritable person, but guys, my blended family really irritates me sometimes and i wish that wasn’t the case. i’m still suffering from the effects of my parents’ divorce and i just want to be free of it.

This video has helped me to understand how I get in one of those moods. I asked my wife to make a call for me on her phone, because my phone was having problems. I thought she would, but she only asked me to put in the number in her phone. Then, didn’t do it and then said for me to call after I waited for her. This irritated me even more. I should taken a time out, and relaxed. But, I was crabby at her. I hated that I did that. Now I know a better way to handle this after seeing your video.

We need to change not people around us, we need to see what WE ourselves are doing, not other people, they have their own life, I have my own life, they are not going to do what I want, they don't have control over me and my feelings, why do I allow them to control me like that? why?

So true, Andro Leguina - we can't change others, just ourselves. If you are in the habit of allowing others to affect or influence you, then it's hard to break out of that habit. Practice a different response when you start feeling irritated by others - you'll get better at it. Keep this in mind - do you want others to control you, or do you want the freedom of being in control yourself? I get so irritable around my mom and I can’t stand it. I miss her often (we don’t live close to each other) and I worry about her frequently (because I am a chronic worrier). But much of the reason why I’m afraid of bad things happening to her, I think, comes from how bad of a kid I am to her. Who would feel good spending time around someone who gets impatient and annoyed with them all the time??? I love her a lot, but I can’t express it properly. We haven’t had problems since I was like 13. I’m 25 now and still can’t get out of that mindset around her.

Always good hearing psycs Dr's talking about it is a joke an nothing works for someone who's so irritated behind return my whole life is pathetic and everything in is depressing frustrating irritating making me extremely angry I've tried walking away counting to 10 bla bla bla I came to a cross rd with life and my life partner my child with autism I just don't think I can last much longer without just snapping and I have a ton of rage that I don't know where to direct this in the end

Good perspective that are irritations are coming from outside factors. But I still don't understand what to do at this point of realization. The outside factors are still there and they still irritate me. What do I do in the timeout that helps me be different toward those people and situations? 🤷‍♀

I get angry or frustrated just by my husband, otherwise ima very nice person. I don’t want him to think himself more powerful (in any way) than me so i yell loud to the point he shuts his mouth, its sick, i am sick. I can’t take it anymore, i wanna work on it. He’s such a good man but m just a toxic woman. I hate it.

Another good way to handle this is by realising that life is actually pretty crappy most of the time so your expectations are low so when bad stuff happens you were expecting it and when good stuff happens it really feels great because you were expecting the worst. Orrrrr is that anxiety?

Im a very irritable person and i dont know what causes it but things can be going perfectly and out of no where i get all pist off and actually at times i enjoy being angry and pissed off, i have no problem making an ass out of myself in public when i get like this, also driving really sets me off. Also i have 5 kids 3 that live with me under 7 years old and i don't want this to wear off on them.

My anger toward something is complex. Has anyone ever gotten so _tired_ of someone they see constantly? I feel we see my mom's sister more than my two other aunts (her sister in laws), and I think I'm annoyed because...they're my favorites over the maternal aunt. I get to see the aunt I'm most annoyed with (secretly) than the aunts I enjoy, and I guess I feel that's not fair. It's her, her, her, her, her. Sisters can be SO annoying, even as moms (with the sisterly comparisons, you know). Besides, I think I resent their relationship a bit because I'm a brother with only sisters, and I feel brothers are less important to sisters? You know, brothers are for brothers and sisters are for sisters? Like I said, it's complex. Is it possible how I'm feeling is actually normal, so I'm not being a bigot toward my one and only blood aunt (without her knowledge)?

Dr Paul, please give me some advice. Recently I feel frustrated and irritable all day every day. It is my normal state. I think the frustration and irritability are from overworking. I don't blame others, I just get frustrated at the rate of progress. I work very hard, and the rate of progress is very very slow, and the slow progress bothers me greatly! What should I do?? I don't want to slow down, but I think I am at physical limits :-/ I get 6.5 - 7 hours sleep usually, more on weekends, if that matters.

Fahraynk, the amount of sleep you get definitely matters. There is a video on the playlist about sleep deprivation and how it can affect you. I would try to get a little more sleep during the week. Figure out what you have control over and let everything else go. You may need a rest to recharge your battery.

I just feel like a fcked up person, bitterness, resentment, hateful, anger, sadness, feeling sorry for myself, at this point I don’t think my life is fixable. I feel like I just need to die B/C there’s no fixing me and I’m just 22 My life is a mess, I’m broke, I live with super toxic people, even when I’m doing better, they just bring me right back to being sad and then angry and make me even more toxic. I can’t leave them, or I’ll be homeless, my job pays shit and I No longer have the same dreams and aspirations anymore. I’m just shit. And I really don’t want to be this angry toxic person, I don’t want to be negative and bring my partner down, he deserves better. I wish I wasn’t sick like this. My mom caused me to have issues from a very young age. But now that I’m older they’re really kicking in. She herself deals with the same issues. And I just don’t want that for my life. If I ever had kids I wouldn’t want this for them either. I just feel so hopeless. I never thought that this would be me, I use to just look at my mom and say I’ll never be like that 😞 I’m more and more like her. I feel like I just want to die
