Teak wood is almost on every Yacht I have been on and is used for furniture, the deck, deckheads, caprails, you name it and Teak could be used. It doesn't take long before it begins to go grey in the sun as it is often left raw. The techniques used in this video is an example of a very quick way our yacht crew members treat Teak.
Look forward to releasing the ±30 videos of my summer soon. More vlog style. For now these are a few How To guides.

Curious why don't you oil it after all that prep work? Watco Teak Oil or Exterior Oil or Rubio Monocoat Hybrid Wood Protector would work wonders and only require a quarterly reapplication. They don't get slick when wet either.
@SmokeUpDatCrack

The best way it to really just leave it alone, teak has natural oils in it and although applying "teak oil" will make it look good for a while, the solvents tend to strip the natural oil away as it off gasses. So it's best to really simple scrub with soap to clean the light oxidation and let it do it's thing. We found that out with our own boat, tables etc. It's an interesting read if you search teak oil myth.

Hi Jared, loving the videos! Question: have you ever thought about using Odie’s Oil? It’s not only designed for every wood, but it’s especially great on exotics like Teak and it would prevent oil spots from ever occurring. You would only need to use vinegar and water to clean periodically. As a wood worker, I can attest to it’s unbelievable properties. If you ever want any more details, let me know!

Ive found your videos a few months ago now and have been watching them, they are great for someone that has been looking into getting into this industry for awhile (life got in the way but I'm free to chase my dreams now). I Will actually be going down to South Africa to take my Yacht Masters and hope to be able to find a job right on a yacht right after I get my certificate. More how to guides would be awesome. Also I see this looks more like a private yacht and isn't chartered, do you have experience with boats that do charters? And if so, what are the main differences you have seen? I Have heard that you work abit harder with charters with the turnover of guests, but normally a good sized tip for the weeks charter would make up for the extra effort of always having guests on board.

Thank you for the feedback Brandon. I will ALWAYS try to include ''how to guides'' within the content I make. @florablosser407
@florablosser407 Год назад
I will totally agree with you as a General Rule. With that said, I use a low pressure 1,200 psi washer with a wide tip (15 degrees) at approximately 6-12" away. There is no burring or destruction of the natural wood fibers. It appears that washers with a psi of over 1800-2000 starts to be that point that the wood is negatively impacted. I watched a person (against my advice) use a 3000 psi washer and literally redesigned the wood with divits and new channels where the fibers were completely removed. Always best to simply start with the most conservative approach and work your way more aggressive until the desired effect has been reached.

An oil based product can be applied to teak but inevitably it makes it worse. Why? Eventually stains still occur and half the products used to treat oil stains also then remove the oil based teak treatment and end up leaving patches everywhere. Raw teak is 100% better to care for.
@MichelBertrand

Not entirely true. Teak Wonder sealer protects the decks against fat and suncream stains and is not affected by K2R. The K2R will still pull out any aggressive fat stains that manage to sit above the sealer, and the sealer will still come up with a good, thorough part 1&2 scrub. We part 1&2 only twice a season (May to October) and give the decks a super light scrub with wash down water once a week. We apply a new coat of teak wonder every 4 weeks, and our decks always look brand new. Raw teak is basically a sponge for any dirt. My 2 cents...

"The price of a beer?" What are we talking? Schlitz cans? King Cobra bottles? St. Pauli Girl? A craft beer found in Vermont only during autumn craft fairs? We need to know this!!!

Do you ever oil the teak?
@jaredwatney
@jaredwatney 5 лет назад
An oil based product can be applied to teak but inevitably it makes it worse. Why? Eventually stains still occur and half the products used to treat oil stains also then remove the oil based teak treatment and end up leaving patches everywhere. Raw teak is 100% better to care for.

is the teak left unfinished for a reason? it seems like there would be something applied to it that would seal it and protect it.

Great video, however, as Ocean Alexander yacht owner... I can't stand the dull look of untreated teak. It looks so unfinished and old for a multi-million dollar vessel. Personal taste I guess. A good sealer (not oil) really classes it up although makes it a little hotter to walk on. Teak sealer gives a layer of UV protection to teak wood. It also contains ingredients to prevent mildew growth. It makes a barrier to prevent the oxidation of the outer layer of wood, so that your teak furniture won’t turn gray. My 2 cents. :) Love your stuff and wish you continued success! @@jaredwatney

They make a product called "Plasteak" as in Plastic teak. There are quite a few new options and because i am a bit of an environmental enthusiast, I would consider other options if I was an owner but for most yachts, Teak is the only real option and thats all most owners really know. Think it will be a while before really used

Don't know the product but I replaced the deck behind my house with Trex composite recycled from polyethylene bags from dry cleaners, and sawdust. It made sense, all things considered. Unfortunately I didn't consider "all things." I chose the teak colour as it was the lightest shade but the material gets so hot you need flip-flops to walk on it when sunny. Also it's like a skating rink with ice or snow on it making access to the hot tub a perilous endeavour. Best bet: stay with teak and let others try new synthetic materials to see if there are hidden surprises. My yachting days are long gone but I wanted to say thanks for the informative videos.

To be honest, if you are an environmental enthusiast you would go with teak. Trees are panted to take care of demand... and plastic is plastic... messy to build and messy to dispose of. I don't like how much unnecessary plastic we use, like those ready-peeled-warped-in-plastic-fruits we see in the supermarkets.

Hello Jarad, I know you posted this quite a while ago. But, why don't you use natural tung oil? The Chinese have used it since at least 400BC. It's fantastic for teak on boats (where it was originally used). With a zinc additive, it is good against UV rays (where I've seen damages on some of the yachts in not only your videos)... stops that graying of the wood. it's good against oil & food staining (Wait till you have to get red wine out of untreated teak). It stops salt water from soaking in also. Lastly, it's food-safe, and leaves the teak looking and feeling natural, the same as the day it was installed. Plus, unlike other finishes, you keep the non-slick surface you need on boat decking. And, how you showed cleaning of teak in this video, does not change. It just needs a freshening every few years.
