Today we're diving in for a full movie review of Wendy Williams: The Movie, a 2021 Lifetime biopic about the famous celebrity talk show host's rise to fame. I was immediately obsessed with this movie's less than perfect production techniques, such as insane amounts of voiceover narration, unconvincing period looks, and an unusual way of handling certain taboo subjects. Let's dive in and try and make sense of this script, and see how they could have increased the impact of telling Wendy's story! As always, don't forget to like and subscribe! There is NO way she got clean in 4 days... she's not clean now. I was addicted for 10 years. I've been clean for 8 now... my brain is now fully healed. It took a good 4 years to reach normalcy. @@Amarianee Exactly!! Also, no offense but this actress is not just much thinner, but also much more attractive than Wendy, so it was really hard to believe. The makeup/hair and accent can only do so much when their faces/bodies just aren’t the same. And there were definitely ways to make her face / body more like Wendy’s or simply choosing another actress. But I think this was yet another delusional vanity ticket for Wendy, so can’t say I’m surprised... The embellishment of her life story is definitely the bigger problem here. Like, I’m sorry, are you saying it’s ok for you to be mean and invent life-ruining nonsense about people bc everyone was mean to you when you were younger?? Gimme a fuckin break. You have bent and twisted reality when it comes to other people’s lives, in a petty ignorant jealous fashion, and now you’re even doing it with your own life to make yourself seem better! Typical. She has no self awareness or decorum. That stuff about sexual assault and drug abuse was SO inaccurate and insensitive, I can’t believe it made it to the final cut. And I’m surprised Nick didn’t talk more about how awful she is on her show and how much she lies?? And the gay bashing/insensitivity?! Are you kidding me? As a bi woman I am shocked she still has any fans on the spectrum, bc holy shit. Really hope Nick isn’t one of them and knows the truth about Wendy. She’s a cruel, shallow callous woman. Wendy: I had a cocaine addiction...and I beat it in 4 days. This makes me mad. There are people with severe addiction issues and she makes it seem like it's nothing. In real life, she relapsed and it is normal for people with addictions to relapse. It's even one of the Stages of Change. The movie was more focused on how many radio stations and bosses she worked with.

@@angh3ll202 There are a lot of issues that were glossed over in the story. It would have made her seem more human if she showed us how she overcame her struggles, instead of just telling. There was a lot of filler in this movie that took time away from important parts of her life. They wanted to cram all this useless information into a short movie instead of fully developing the main points. It's like they made the movie with no effort. You are right; it felt like she learned nothing. The movie made it seem like all her major problems were solved quickly. If they wanted to be lazy, which they were, they could of at least done a voiceover of her saying she struggled with quitting but tried her best to overcome it.

It sucks cause it could make a really good movie, if it was done right. A story about a black woman in the 80s/90s trying to make it in that business, showing her struggle with sexism and racism. Exactly. As for her cocaine and alcohol addiction, coming from a recovering addict myself who has spent 10 years in and out of rehab and sober livings, it’s so much deeper than it was made out to be and we all know Wendy had the last word about every scene. She relapsed as recently as 2019 and her strange behavior throughout 2020, especially on the show, makes it seem like she’s still using. It’s not often a celebrity lives in sober living, the only others ones that have been open about it are Demi Lovato and Amanda Bynes. I think it’d be really helpful for those struggling with addiction to see her depict how much her addiction effected her life with more honesty.
@Amarianee
@Amarianee 3 года назад
@@mollyfoxxx Even Amanda wasn't open about it until she started getting clean. I'd argue that Demi, Pink, and Gaga are really the main recent celebrities to be very open about it (maybe a few more I can't think of right now), but a lot of 80s actors and musicians have been very open about it these days. Cocaine was EVERYWHERE in the 80s. As much as I dislike her, Janice Dikinson has been EXTREMELY open about the ups and downs about her addiction struggles. Even her recent relapses. She wanted opioids after her surgery on Botched but sucked it up to stay clean (with the help of Dr. Dubrow telling her no lol).

I think if this movie had any self awareness, it could have treated the moment as such. Instead, it seems to be judging Wendy's (and through comparison, everyone else's) way of coping with her trauma. She gets confident and starts kicking ass, because she is a strong woman, therefore... those who react in the opposite manner, and become fearful and lose their self-esteem, and are maybe hindered in all sorts of ways for years, they're indirectly treated as lesser. People cope in all sorts of ways. Compensating for being made feel small and powerless is valid and probably common, but so is withdrawing, and neither says anything about the personality and strength of the victim.

As someone who was an addict - when she freaked out and fainted on stage she looked like she had experienced an aura before having a seizure which can happen in withdrawal. The wide eyed look, the disassociation with place, the terrified look on her face, and the loss of consciousness all make me think she was having some complication from withdrawal. So for her to gloss over the Substance use and addiction makes me think that she’s never really accepted it as a true problem, which is why she glamorized it and minimized it’s effects.

Thank you Nick for bringing up how the drug addiction portrayed in this movie was not realistic at all. As a former addict I don’t appreciate the way movies like this make it seem like detoxing or going “cold turkey” is no big deal, I know the voice over says “it wasn’t easy” but like you said that was an extremely glamorous depiction of a cocaine withdrawal. Addiction is a very complex illness that not only affects you physically but psychologically as well so glossing over it like that (as you stated) lacked awareness severely.

The confidence boost could be how she copes with trauma. Acting more confident than you feel so that nobody will be able to make you feel that small again. Or this could just be me projecting. They call them different things on different coasts, on the east coast and especially Florida where I went for recovery they were called halfway houses but when I moved to California and called my sober living a “halfway house” everyone was like, isn’t that where they send people who just got released from jail? I guess it all depends on the facility but a good halfway house moves in steps and you have to earn your privileges. Like most people who are fresh from rehab and have less than 2 weeks sober can’t leave without a sober companion and have early curfew. Once you hit 30, 60, 90 days you earn more privileges. Let’s be real, you can relapse anywhere but they shouldn’t have let you leave and you would’ve been on 24 hour lockdown if you were brand new. I think too besides that, the awful aspects of her character with the homophobia or starting/spreading rumors and fights wouldn’t do well for her and her career. I just wish one celebrity in their biography would show the humanity that we all have. Dark and light. Not saying everyone is toxic, but not every is a solid saint. We all have done or said things we aren’t proud of and especially since being homophobic or apathetic to celebrities personal lives (since they are still human and not really above others) was more acceptable back then, it woulda been cool to see that reflected upon and her changed behavior to how she deals with gossip, etc. nowadays even if she hadn’t completely changed.... but that’s expecting too much from a Hollywood talk show host, sadly....

Wendy's voice is so iconic, I almost think they should have had her do the voice over parts.
