The reason why the sprite pie sounds so crazy and that only an insane person would come up with it, thats because it is. It's a variation of the water pie, or desperation pie. It's a recipe made during the U.S depression era when people had next to nothing to make food with. Apparently butter ($0.24 a pound) and flour ($0.16 a bag) was something that was very cheap during that time, and so, those ingredients combined with water were used to make a lot of other desperation recipes.

@@harlanglassman1204 According to Americans who participated in WWI, they still had an abundance of food, especially compared to the French and the Germans. I highly recommend "Three Soldiers" by John Dos Passos, which describes the perspectives of three American soldiers at different locations on the Western Front. Erich Maria Remarque's account of WW1 (which he witnessed as a trench soldier) also confirms Dos Passos's testimonies: Remarque describes (for instance in "Der Weg Zurück") that American soldiers had an abundance of chocolate and liquor, which they traded with the starving German soldiers in exchange for medals, dirty pith helmets and used bandages so that they could flex to their families at home. So this is definitely from post WW1, and the military definitely did not have this for Thanksgiving lol

Dump cake is very much a thing, although I believe it's more of a southern dish. It's normally made by layering fruit in a casserole dish (canned cherries and pinapple are the most common), covering with a box of cake mix and slicing butter on top. The butter melts into the cake mix creating an improv crumble, and the fruit melds together into this molten, gooey fruit casserole. It's really good, especially once it's had a chance to sit.

Every country has its share of influencers coming up with vile recipes :P In Germany my local Aldi advertised for Christmas a "dessert" recipe that combined blue cheese and creme brulee o.O that's heinous. People think that an unhealthy diet is typically American. It isn't. What IS typically American, is not receiving proper medical treatment when said diet causes problems. In Germany practically every third dude is obese from a lifetime of eating little else other than beer and sausage, but he hangs in there because healthcare is free and abundant -- doctors will tell him when he's on the verge of diabetes and then prescribe for him free trips to a dietitian or send him off to the gym. Meanwhile in the States, people break their legs and are too afraid to call an ambulance because they aren't insured and can't afford the hospital bills :/

My fave dump cake recipe: 2 cans peaches in juice into a 9"x13" glass baking dish Sprinkle with cinnamon if you want! Dump 1 box yellow cake mix over top evenly Top with cubed butter evenly I use up to 1 stick Bake @ 350° for 25 to 40 minutes Make sure the cake is baked thru and the top is golden! Let sit for like 5 or 10 minutes and serve with vanilla ice cream!

For the dump cake use the entire box and 1&1/2 sticks of butter. Honestly the best one I’ve ever made was with homemade apple pie filing, spice cake and homemade caramel. Honestly worth the effort for it.

Corn starch is added to hot chocolate mixes for texture, it raises viscosity, bringing the beverage closer to that of molten chocolate

The reason hot chocolate has corn starch in it's because when you actually heat it up for a while it thickens the hot chocolate and it makes it rich and it coats your mouth

well, it sort of is. As a lot of people in the comments have said, in the great depression, they made water pie, because it was cheap. The sprite pie is a variation of that

I'm like 99.9% certain it's based off a recipe for "water pie" (literally the only difference is sprite instead of water) which is a depression-era recipe
