Icing on the Lakes is a project to document multiple lakes in the Changthang region in Ladakh in their frozen state. In winter the Changthang area, at 5,000m, is not accessible by vehicle and the only option is to trek in temperatures hitting -48 deg at night. Travelling solo with a 17kg backpack Sankar Sridhar would end up doing treks extending upto 12 days, going deeper and deeper into the Changthang. The reward for taking on this challenge has been to return with incredible stories and images, which we all have not only never seen but may also never imagined.
Sridhar is a director with MWG, a content management solutions company and spends much of his free time and earnings pursuing his long-term projects to document communities within their natural environments, making friends and collecting a trove of stories and experiences along the way.
Over the more than past two decades, he has travelled extensively with the Changpa, Gaddi, Bakarwal, Rabari and Fakirani communities and trekked extensively in Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and the hinterlands of Gujarat and Rajasthan. His stunning images have won him multiple international Photography awards, and published in more than 20 international & national magazines and newspapers.

Amazing a Southie venturing solo in -48 degrees with a heavy load of 17 kgs. The pix taken are masterpieces by an 'Artist' and must have spent hours, waiting for the right moment for the shot. Shots of Markha valley reminiscences of my expdn with a Welsh team to Kang Yisey, 'centuries 'back. During my Kamet expdn, first time saw gauge giving a reading of -50 and thought there was some prob with the gadget. The cameras seize at that temp and intrigued, how Sridhar managed to take those pix. Also impressive is the presenter's narrating skills, remembering all the facts and strange names as he was commenting from the very spot. IMF Webinar is doing a great job in bringing fwd these hidden gems.

Thank you, Mr. Puri for your kind words. Batteries become precious possessions, as does the camera, in such conditions. I would always keep the batteries in a pouch that I hung from my neck, and against skin. The camera would be under layers of clothing to keep the shutter from freezing, but not against skin, to prevent any moisture buildup that would freeze it when taken out.

Beautiful images. I have traversed the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary in 2019 October and found quite a few fascinating experiences in Tso Kar Basin, Mirpal Tso, Kyagar Tso. Have experienced miraculous ice formation in Chadar earlier as well. Nevertheless these documentation on frozen & hidden lakes are amazing. Best wishes for this project. Keep inspiring Mr. Sridhar.
