I really like the metal sonic story. Metal sonic shows so much emotion without saying a word. I see it as metal trying to be like sonic. If sonic can get infected by the metal virus he should be able to as well if he's the better sonic... right? That's what he wanted to prove to himself. Him failing to do so must have hit hard, as it shut down his desperate attempt to prove he was the real sonic.
I think Metals story ties directly back into the one real bit of characterization that the games have given him, and one the comics have picked up on: That he thinks he's the real, original Sonic. He used the metal virus on himself because it was something meant to infect and change Sonic, yet Metal is completely unaffected by it. We aren't seeing Metal wondering about the implications of having his great rival turn into a zombot, but the implications of the fact that he can't. He went to the metal virus to find proof that he is the original sonic, and instead found more evidence against that belief.
Having read the entire annual, I honestly enjoyed this issue. I have a lot to say this annual. Story 1. The Use of the "Suddenly, Big Appears!" Easter egg trope really fits here. What also helps is that it helps tie some theoretical instances of plotholes. But, it was a tragic one. Big's willful ignorance was something the uninformed will be like. Just a guy wanting a peaceful life only to get caught in the crossfire. And is completely unaware of the fate befalling him. It's paradoxically blissful. In his state, he went down with someone he cared for, so its gotta mean something. Story 2. A highly relatable scenario. Sure they may not have powers, but they have the power of telecommunications, and that's better than nothing at all. Story 3: Metal Sonic's story was ambiguous in nature. It could literally mean he will miss his fights with his copy, or he is potentially concerned about what starts with O and ends with E: Obsolescence. Could be anything really. Story 4: An interesting story, but leaves questions. It shows that Eggman may be a egomaniacal pain, he has a childish side. Though, the robot starline makes me wonder if Eggman had a plan to double cross him. But that Space balls reference....I almost died of laughter. Story 5: A prelude to Issue 22, and a followup to 17. But, it feels more like necessary plot filler. But it shows that Zombots may have a hive-mind intelligence, considering the Flickies worked in concert with one another to shield charmy the way they did. Story 6: An nice reminder that even Jewel was an adventurer with Tangle in their youth, she has stayed away from that sort of thing after forming and owning a the musuem. It seeves as a nice prelude to issue 24, albeit a tragic one. I would get mad at the fanclub for hiding their misdeeds, but they are children, roughly cream's age, so it's illogical to be continually mad at them. Overall, it is a collection of tragic tales, and dimming hope. But, it does a nice of explaining events, instances, and reactions of common folk (Nite, Jewel, Don, etc.), the Supervillains (Starline, Metal, and Eggman) and lesser heroes (Vector, Espio, Big) in this crisis As of now, the climax is tenatively slated for July 22, as a release date. A lot can happen between today and then, so don't be surprised about further delays, especially if it happens over logically real-life crises.
Y'know, I predicted that Froggy got Big infected. Lo and behold, and if you think about it, all the bad things that happen to Big involve that stinking frog. That aside, I liked Nite and Don {very puny names} we need more bird-based characters {that aren't the Babylon rouges}
The end is near, a BIG start, problems OWLING ot the solution, a REFLECTION of truth, a break from reality, until the FLY of pain, until the SPIRAL fell in despair.
Hmm... I kept thinking how Eggman's other day-off play out. Badnik: Lord Eggman. Eggman: WHAT?! Badnik: We approached another village. Eggman: KNOCK ON MY DOOR! KNOCK NEXT TIME, YOU RUST BUCKET!!!! Badnik: Yes sir. (beat) Eggman: Did you see anything? Badnik: No sir. I did not see you playing with your toys again. Eggman: GOOD!
the egg cave really makes me want to see another megaman crossover(especially if it was a super smash bros one as that actually was what the nexus cliffhanger in the archie comics was going to lead into along with the sadly cancelled mario archie comics.) that has eggman showing dr. wily this and forming another bromance.(and one of the robot toys behind eggman looks like satam/archie comics robotnik.) those robot sonic toys especially knuckles,rouge & shadow actually look good, also man i never thought of it that way it could be eggman secretly missing his mr. tinker persona but is so enraged by his fails to sonic he can't fully accept it. and i like how the zombot animals actually is a nice detail of sonic,tails & knuckles being different in sentience compared to the animal friends.(though seeing charmy being protected by a swarm of flickies makes me want to see art of him meeting q-bee from darkstalkers.still sucks that series,power stone,devil may cry & bayonetta considering smash bros. never showed up in worlds unite.)
Rereading Big's chapter, I realized the metal virus was spreading around the trees around the same time he just found groggy. Kudos to Jon Gray and Reggie Graham for fantastic artwork
I just noticed half way through the video with the Radio Station; K-TBR. It might actually be a reference to Kintobor, what's said in the Archie Comics to be Dr. Eggman's original l last name (which is a reverse of Robotnik). I personally believe that's the real reference here and if it is, I find that amazing. Either way, thanks for another great video. I'm always looking forwards for these IDW comic reviews from you.
Just a small note. The radio statio K-TBR could be read as Kintobor which was Dr Robotniks/Eggmans name prior to his transformation in some western sonic media.
I am pretty certain that the robot starline figure is hint to Eggman betraying him in the future. I think the annual was supposed to come out before that event in the comics. That beside, take notice to the fact the Eggman has both regular and metal counterparts of characters. His tails and espio toys were used as example of zombots, so Starline seeing himself as a potential zombot makes him ponder about stuff, the timing really emphasised his thoughts, so that's why Eggman kicked him out of it. Well, that's my take at least, and it seems to make the most sense to me. But for all we know he could just kicked him out of his cave because of embarrassment.

almost every lego set i own has been taken apart and it's pieces used for builds, and only one set i never finished building, the lego ninjago Samurai X mech, only a few sets are still mostly intact, like the orignal Kylo Ren's shuttle set which I have slowly been taking pieces from the wings off.
I really hope we see more of jewel in the future , at first i really didn't care for her but after this issue , i really want her to be a recurrent character

It was all good. My favorite, surprising, was Nite Owl. It was so down to earth, realistic, no action, and it had different characters that felt like a fresh of breathe air. Same for Metal Sonic's chapter. No dialogue but it speaks volumes. Least favorite was the Chaotix chapter. Only because it didn't really feel like anything new.
Hold on a sec.... K-TBR? Is that a reference to Ovi Kintobor? (The original version of Robotnik before he got turned evil by a rotten egg) Or is that just a HUGE coincidence?

I still find the lack humans to be weird since the comics reference games where they exist. It throws me off, like you can have both anthropomorphic people and humans in the same world.
So as always will I also give my thoughts on the comic here in the comment so lets go through this Story by story like Megabeatman did. Big: So first of all I hate the setup as its again "I MUST FIND FROGGY" completely ignoring that Froggy wouldn't just leave Big for no reasons I mean the end of his story in SA1 as well as his theme song both makes it clear that his friendship with Froggy is mutual and the only reason Big ever needed to hunt Froggy down was because of outside influence like being possessed by a angry super chao or getting kidnapped by a Robot with an identity crisis. So the lack of an explanation for Froggies disappearance is really annoying me as its just goes with the Meme rather than actually giving Big a legitimate reason for going on this adventure. Than would there also be the fact that for as oblivious as Big can be there is no way I believe he would not be able to realize that his friends Amy and Cream in particular are in a crisis given how often he actually ended up confronting the zombots. Than is him not realizing That Froggy is infected even dumber as even SA1 Big imminently realized that something was wrong with Froggy after he toke the emerald and ran off. Big knows his little pal he would notice if something was wrong with him he is slow and simpleminded not brain dead. And to put the cheery on top of it all did this story also take something dumb from issue 22 and made it 1000 worse as its now a full on plothole. This being the infected monkey that started the fall of Restauration HQ being able to get in despite Gemerl clearly in this issue scanning all new arrives for the Virus and not letting anyone in meaning him getting in is now a plot hole and a pretty major one at that. (also towards you Megabeatman the Froggy in the starts is properly a reference to the Froggy in the stars from Big's journal Easter egg in Secret Rings rather than the bad ending of Sonic 2 8 bit) Radio show: I don't really have much to say towards it beside that it will make a obvious problem in a latter story in this book even worse. (but I will say getting to see some average peoples perspective on this situation is at least something rather interesting) Metal Sonic: This is easily the best in the book it says so much without the need to say anything and makes great use of the Comic Format and also shows greatly how little Starlin really understands of anything. Egg Cave: First of all I am disappointed that Eggman didn't channeled his inner Darkside and actually used his Action figures as peaces on a board to plan his next moves. But now were this nearly not noteworthy thing is out of the way will I say its fine nothing to good or to bad about it but I do dislike that it ones again is rather artificial in how the story attempts to creak Starlines trust into Eggman. Its far from the worst the Book has done so far in that direction but its rather apparent. The Chaotix: So 2 major problems I have go back the general incompetence of the Heroes that there show that being the Smock bombs which disorientate the Zombots and the fact that there have shields to prevent infection. Because really WHY AREN'T ALL TEAMS EQUIP WITH THIS SHIT!? Like seriously this would have made so many dangerous situations so much more manageable. Than would I also like to point out how convenient it is that Charmy was the only bee or the like in a armada of Flicky's and ones again have to point out the inconsistency in the metal capacity of the Zombots with the whole protecting Charmy from capture thing. And finally as I already mentioned way back in the issue 22 reviews comment section how nonsensically Vectors move was given that there is literally nothing there can do to help Charmy right now and he as one of the most smartest Characters in the series (for his great detective and reasoning skills rather than mechanical ones) should know that doing something like this will make it only more likely that Charmy is going to be stuck this way as there endanger the people that could otherwise help curing him. I know the Chaotic stick together but given that Vector rather recently had to deal with a lot of lost during the War that was Forces would I expect him to handle things a bit more logical. The end of Spirale hill: Okay this is were I have to go back to what I said about the Radio station so we know that the Restauration is informing people about the Virus situation and Jewel her self is also aware of it already AND the Kid is as shown by the use of explanation marks in a public area screaming about a metallic liquid near the town and that he since it appeared hasn't seen his friends again. So all of this said do I have to ask WHY is not just Juwel as unconcerned about it but also why not the entirety of Spiral Hill is running amok now that the Metal Virus has come to there city apparently and already has claimed the live of a few playing children. Are all people from Tangles village brain dead idiots or what? Its especially bad that apparently no one informed the children about the crisis that at this point already had wiped out at least 3 major cities was about to do it to anything one were Silver currently was and at least also one village. So overall would I call this way worse than last years story because while last year also had a few bad stories was there nothing as bad as the missions in just the big story never mind all problems this book has from its 6 stories are 2 Okay to decent, 1 Pretty good and 3 bad to arguably terrible which really isn't a good outcome especially given how much the bad ones actually impact the main book especially Big's has some big problems for the main book in it. Seriously the overall lack of clear ,understandable and most importantly consistent rules for the Metal Virus and the Zombots make them destroy just about everything there are a part of as there never make any sense as the rules constantly changing and paar this why how often Characters have to behave like complete idiots for the drama evil wins moments that story replies to much to happen and you already get something pretty bad add to this some good old contrivances and the recipe for a disaster is complete and this is exactly what everything concerning these Zombots ends up being. I mean just look at it the 3 best stories in this annual were the ones with the least amount of them as these stories could work without having to deal with the brocken nonsensically rules that come with this stupid NOT-Virus.

Like seriously this would have made so many dangerous situations so much more manageable." okay speaking seriously here, espio is a ninja, so his smoke bombs are probably "homemade" rather than something that just gets mass-produced, so maybe espio himself only has these and do to all the nonsense happening so far, he just doesn't have the time (or even resources) to make enough for everybody, as for the shield, well honestly, it doesn't matter, at that point you might as well ask "why don't the characters just wear rubber jumpsuits?", it would make sense, but at that point there'd be no plot, which is one of the main problems with the premise of this arc.

I mean obviously would Gemerl have to let big in so that he would get in contact with the Monkey when the out break happens otherwise would Big be safely on the outside walls of the base when the Chaos starts. For the possibility of coming of as a weirdo he is a machine with limited emotions so he wouldn't care if anything would something like scan proved cloth only make him for suspicious of the monkey. Have you seen in office chair in Unleashed and Colors that one was super comfy and stylish as well and the most Comfy chair in the world did he already build in in the control center of the Egg carrier. So he has plenty of super Comfy chairs to fall back on. While you are right there are properly home made but its seams off that not only this was the first time he apparently used them since the out break (otherwise would he have known before) but also that the resistance had like to production lines to make more given that there had many of them during forces to make air ships and Wispowns as the comic already explained early on. If you remember some of my older comments to these issues would you perhaps remember that I did ask why no one was wearing Hazmat suits given that there were an option of clothing in Forces already. But these shields make it worse as there obviously aren't build for just yet but these have to be stock leaved over from Forces meaning there had properly plenty of shields just lying around that there could have used to protect them self but there did't this is just like the complete absence of any Wispown beside Wispers one of these really really big logistic issues I have with this story as it shows that there had these resources but for some unknown reason refused to use them and keep losing people because of it. As for the if there did this than there would be no story point do I have 2 things to say: 1)If you can't make a story unless everyone has to be dumb down than don't make this story AND 2)If you dumb down characters to tell you story than redraft the story so long till you don't need these crutches any more. I mean the Zombots are aggressive and have proper claws already so suits would not destroy the story it would just mean that not every contact would be a one hit kill anymore making the whole thing less artificially dramatically and would require good writing to make it work with than would generate genuin drama.

Megabeatman, with the zombot flickies surrounding and flying around zombot Charmy story, I have to strongly disagree with your assessment of that idea being a possible callback to Archie Sonic's story of Charmy being a prince, which isn't canon to the video games. The zombot flickies surrounding and flying around Charmy and protecting him felt more like a shout out to Super Tails from the SEGA Genesis video game "Sonic 3 and Knuckles" when the four golden super flickies surrounded and flew around Super Tails and protected him like a body halo. It would make more sense if that's the case seeing how Super Tails with his four super flickies is canon to the classic Sonic games, not Archie Sonic. Also, you neglected and failed to mention that the first cover featuring Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Tangle, Whisper and the others was done by Yui Karasuno of Sonic Team. The very fact that Sonic Team has done artwork for IDW Sonic makes it more than clear that IDW Sonic and its mini-series are 100% canon to the video games. And it should be noted that Sonic Team NEVER did official artwork any type for Archie Comics or Archie Sonic comics for that matter since SEGA of Japan and Sonic Team were never involved with Archie Sonic comics and they had completely rejected Sonic SatAM and Archie Sonic comics.
Will you please stop putting words in Sega's mouth already! These comics are written and published by an American publisher; and correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe American comic books are not nearly as popular in Japan as Japanese Manga is in America. Furthermore, the comics are a continuous story with little to no break. If they were canon; either games would spoil the comics, or the comics would spoil the games. People would get confused, especially the Japanese fans, who's country is from which the source material originates! The comics and the games being in the same universe just doesn't make sense. Unless Sega says the IDW comics are canon to the games, they are not! Let Sega speak for itself!

If the Metal Virus is mentioned in the games, most Japanese fans would be confused! And no, them saying "adding more characters to the Sonic Universe" does NOT mean specifically the games. Also, no, having Tangle and Whisper in the endless runner games does not automatically make them canon to the games. If that was the case, movie Sonic would be canon to the games. Lastly, the only art that Sonic Team ever does for this comic is covers, nothing else. Nothing you have said proves that the IDW comics and the games are in the same continuity. It barely makes sense as a theory, so stop constantly proclaiming to be undeniable fact! It's getting on my nerves! And While you're at it, stop putting Archie down! Even if the the Freedom Fighters never appear in IDW, you are being rude and disrespectful to anyone who grew up with them! You practically act like you're crapping on them, especially when you act like IDW is more relevant than Archie.
