Sometimes it’s not that he’s not serious. Sometimes his attachment style-avoidant, dismissive-is a protective wall keeping him from real love and intimacy. If he’s unwilling to do the work to move past that, he’s not the one.

@@laundrybasket2689 I've been in a situation like that with a man. By the time I realized he didn't want to open up to me and that our relationship was superficial, I already had feelings for him. I cycled through quite a few heart breaks with this man before I realized that what I "loved" about him was everything I was willing to do for him and that's not fair. I'm happy to say that it's finally over and I'm waiting for the right man that will pour into me as much as I will pour into him.

I experienced a dismissive avoidant man as well. I never had before and it was a total shock when I discovered relationship attachment styles after the relationship ended. I couldn't put my finger on why this guy always felt distant, aloof, stoic, rigid and dismissive within the relationship that quickly ended for no good reason within 9 months of dealing with him. An Attachment Style video popped up once I searched dismissive behavior in the RU-vid search engine and the pieces of the puzzle started coming together for me. It really makes sense when you think about how early childhood attachment towards a caregiver will determine your attachment style in romantic relationships. Now I know what key questions to ask. One is, what's the longest relationship you've been in? An adult man never being in a long-term relationship, engagement or marriage is a red flag.

The last guy I dated made me feel so crazy whenever I wanted to talk about things that were bothering me. Once, I brought something up that he did that I wasn’t happy with. He gave an explanation/excuse for his behavior. I wasn’t satisfied with the answer, but I accepted it at the time to keep the peace. Some time later, I tried to talk about it again, & he completely shut me down. Said we already talked about it, & he wouldn’t be discussing it again. I was shocked to say the least. This was within 3 months of us dating. I knew right then, that he would never be able to be an adequate partner for me & ended it. At this big age, you should be able to talk, communicate and work out issues. If you can’t do that, you shouldn’t be dating or seeking to enter into someone else’s life. Fast forward, after ending things amicably, or so I thought, he ended up blocking me. He would randomly reach out via text every so often, until I blocked him. It was further confirmation that I did the right thing by walking away. He would’ve definitely taken me on a ride. Mind you, I liked him. A lot. We had amazing chemistry. But you can’t be afraid to walk away from a man, once you know for sure he won’t be able to give you the things you NEED and REQUIRE. Remember, if a man is willing to let you leave then fix the issues, he’s not your person anyway

Yes. On top of the pain I just saw a man's reply to.my comment under another video about break up. I shared.how a man I dated mocked me for sharing a personal traumatic experience. A man replied to my comment 'I can see why he left you seeing you writing these paragraphs'. It's just a stranger but it still hurted me because I already was left hurt and confused feeling used and mistreated. The man who replied was probably just as heartless as the guy I dated. The man I dated tried to convince me having unsafe sex and was yelling at me bc he didn't want to hear my story. Its his right not to want to deal with my trauma but the way he said it and wanted to be intimate as well made it cold and disrespectful.

I accepted a man into my life that wasn’t my type - I really started liking him a lot. He did more for me than anyone has ever but he started to act disrespectful and put me down like I was beneath him. While I miss the things we used to do together and his companionship. I told him many times I did not like that he spoke to me harshly, he would show off in front of other women at stores, he pursued me then didn’t give me a title besides friend. I had to let go. We are neighbors it’s tough and I had high hopes but not if it damages my self worth - it’s got to go!

Yep.. He didn’t want to hear what I had to say.. he kept talking over me, which with me is the wrong thing to do. If you respect me I will respect you, vice versa. In this situation he would not hear me out, which just raised my temper and I found myself in a position I did not want to. So yes Stephan I agree it is time to move on.

I hear you. My ex is a narc full of rage & anger. Obviously Hates women cuz he would Never let me speak stating “women shouldn’t speak. They only talk to make noise. You say stupid things & ask stupid questions so just don’t speak. This devaluing & verbal abuse would go on for hours almost Evey day. Then came the physical abuse when I finally stood up to him! Then the financial abuse, then discard when he threw all my belongings outside in the middle of the night. I’m out, but I still have strong feelings for him 😢.

Holding myself accountable here: my ex overtalk / interrupt me constantly and he knew this was a major trigger and turn off for me because my mom would do this in order to invalidate my emotions or disregard what I was trying to say. I communicated this to my ex that I would appreciate him not doing that to me because I don’t like it happening to me and I’ve never done it, for that reason alone, to other people. I only wanted the basic respect of him doing this and he couldn’t, especially during his heated moments. In turn, this made me withhold intimacy from him, made me shut down (not silent treatment, just quiet so that I can passively let them finish and if I feel like talking I’ll speak but I’ve noticed I rarely felt like finishing when this happened too many times during the conversation with my mom or him), made me ultimately feel emotionally disconnected from him. That led to him constantly feeling rejected or abandoned when I wouldn’t perform oral or intimate sex with him. And because I was struggling with codependency (I’m not using this as an excuse, this was before my therapist officially gave me that label) I did not communicate to him effectively “I do not want to be intimate with you because you’ve made me feel invalidated, insecure and disconnected. I realize these issues are for me to resolve but having them it makes me unable to perform for you. I apologize, could we talk about how to resolve this?” Instead I just wouldn’t want to have sex and I would give him sort of the cold shoulder / mixed signals. I didn’t want to shut him OUT, I just didn’t want to be vulnerable with him because it was weaponized against me. That relationship was never going to withstand and I knew it, but this list ensures that my reactions made total sense. I never knew why I would just “not be in the mood”…turns out the emotional abuse and manipulation kind of contributed to me not trusting him with my body…or feelings.

Not necessarily a narc… could be avoidant personality due to all kinds of things. Try talking about it first. If not willing to try and improve and show actual improvement, then let them go. Some people are scared but will open up if you allow them to a safe place…but if they still can’t , leave and know you gave it your best

I’ve long been afraid the main reason he wants to stay together is b/c he doesn’t want to be alone. He doesn’t want to put in the work, the effort, to try making up for all the time he took away from us nor does he choose to be completely transparent about exactly what he was doing during all the times he was away. He would get mad and call me “nosy” for asking questions. I don’t know how many times he told me to stay in my lane and things were none of my business. We’re not together anymore but it still hurts so very deeply that I prayed for him and prayed for us to be able to build a solid life together w/ a healthy, trusting, and loving relationship to back it up (marriage), but none of that was ever where his heart truly was.

So this is going on in my relationship... He does avoid to discuss issues. But if I complain of something direct about him, he doesn't talk about but he acts and put effort to change. This means a lot to me, but I do get resent about the other stuff exactly like Stephen says in the vídeo.. Yestarday I thought he was so couvard to run away from the subject I brought up. in other hand I hate men who really likes to discuss the relatinship, had 2 boyfriends who were like this and its awfull, I guess I do prefer a man who doesn't talk about issues, at least we never have discussions. Thanks this video actually helped me the way around, I just realize it's not a big problem when a man does not discuss issues. The relationship is lighter, smoother.. I know that me as a woman sometimes want to talk about little unecessary things, if a man respond to all of these things the relationship gets heavy, draws energy, instead of be doing love activities, we are talking - oh no way!!

I do agree that communication is very important, the most important part is how you communicate...most women don't know how to communicate effectively, because most women are driven by emotions, not all, not all, but most my brother deals with this in his marriage, and he just shuts down, I've witnessed several other situations like this as well... a man will never be open to communication, if he feels he's being talked at, scolded or handled like a child, can you speak on skills of effective communication from women 💕

That may be true, however in the context in which I was referring too... shutting down meaning disengaging or protecting his peace, not engaging in an unhealthy or ineffective conversation fueled by the lack of emotional control... there's nothing mentally unhealthy about that.

I suggest you make a game plan for getting out. This will not change, and you have to decide if you want to spend decades living with this relationship. In the meantime, you can go to therapy yourself in order to feel heard and to grow.

@@kathleengeorge-bol5012 thank u for your input... It means a lot. I have been in therapy and it's been helpful. I fled a year ago after a neighbor intervened bc of his rage (I had been trying to leave 9m prior after he tried put his hands around my neck). I've been trying the whole marriage for marital therapy and individual therapy, but he refuses. He defaults to future faking and broken promises, but u can't live like that anymore, nor should I have had to at all. I am looking into options regarding divorce and it's just devastating. You are right that they won't change... It's not worth the stress to deal w this my whole life. Thank you for being a kind voice of reason 🤗

He absolutely won't change but for an act of God. My ex-husband that I was with 26 yrs, just got worst over time with the lying, disrespect and cheating. I find myself thinking about him at times and wondering what if because he is like Jekyll and Hyde. I have to communicate with him regarding divorce matters and he's been ok.

Someone answer this for me please because see ole boy is trying to play my intelligence I come back to the videos that speak to the situation at hand . See Sunday I reached back out to a Intrests , and told him how I missed him and wanted to reconnect he went from from dismissing me to magically wanting to reconnect see Monday he was at my house and spewing this ohh I miss you , I would be with you but your crazy and be bugging and I asked him to stop throwing that in my face And to give me a chance to be a better woman and the woman you want but he wouldn’t stop. Everything Stephan states in this video occurred that night at the end we left off with a kids good bye and a hug and I’ll call you tomorrow to come get me so I can stay the night . This man literally ghosted me not even with a 24 hour period of telling me he wouldn’t disappear . He calls me today to tell me that his phone wasn’t working because of the location he’s in as of right now but now he’s in the same area calling and sending me text messages so when I questioned “ you telling me the day we were suppose to get together your phone magically didn’t work “ he then hangs up on me and text and says this is why I don’t bother with you and all these 1000 questions of yours ! Someone please anybody I need help because I’m sick of feeling like a worthless piece of shit after being ghosted and hurt by men who I believe can change my heart was so hurt I was thinking about running my car into a fence to make the pain of feeling worthless go away 😢😢😢😢 I try to watch the videos and be strong but I just want to stop feeling like this or going through these situations.
