That’s one of the things I realized I disliked about the US, the consumer culture and this insane thing of keeping up with the jones. All of that is a reflection of the values of the society and I eventually understood that I didn’t share those values, but it’s really hard to escape their influence if you stay in that country and that will keep you in debt and once you’re too old to work or no longer want to work you can’t maintain that lifestyle and you sink further into debt, because as you said the US is a debt driven society. It doesn’t rely on financially responsible citizens it wants you to keep spending. It wants you to continue buying a load of useless gadgets which only give you a moments pleasure. I’m happy I escaped that insanity and along with other values I knew I didn’t fit in with the US system even though that is the country of my birth and where I grew up. I bought the lie for years, but I finally woke up and now I’m happy living in Mexico. Viva Mexico!

What confused me when I got here is the Peso and Centivo. This country uses mostly only Peso. The Centivo comes only in 50 Centivo coins. The Peso comes also in coins. $ 10. 50 in US money would be a ten dollar bill and two quarters. The Mexican Peso hypothetically if the currency were the same the cash would be: a ten dollar coin and one Centivo fifty cent piece. This kind of tripped me up because the USA still uses a lot of the change. So it kind of makes you think you have more money than you actually do thus you spend more. What has helped me is to think of everything being charged in dollars (but is actually MX Pesos). What I like most here is the market stands because they’re typically very close by and affordable. Especially if they sell fresh vegetables and tortillas 😋

Thank you for your videos Jose. I am in Merida at the moment doing an exploratory trip to see if I can retire here. I have been here for three weeks already and one more week to go to head back home to Vermont. I thought maybe Mexico would be at least 50% cheaper than the USA but it is not. I have calculated that it is around 35% to 20% cheaper depending where you go. In the USA we have the Dollar stores and I think some things in the USA are actually cheaper than in Mexico. I just got back from a Mall where there is a Money Exchange and the US Dollar is worth 16.50 Pesos. If I was to move to Mexico and want to be frugal, I would just look to where the locals are expending their money. The other thing for me is I misjudged how hot it get here in Merida. There has been a few days that the temperature has hovered around 100 degrees and that is too hot for me coming from Vermont. But Merida is a very nice city and the people are very friendly and courteous.
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels 3 месяца назад
That is awesome! Glad to hear you made an exploratory trip out here first instead of moving out here sight unseen. The Heat is Real even for me who loves the heat over the cold it can still get kinda crazy out here. As for the cost of living, as I mentioned in the video it really all depends on the individual and what they consider luxuries and what not. Also remember things might be a bit more pricy only because you still don't know how and where the locals shop which helps reduce expenses as well. But in the end now that you have been here almost a month you have a better understanding of what life is out here and if it is still for you. I would advise you do the same trip in other cities in Mexico and compare and contrast not just the cost of living but also the quality of life. Remember that it is a huge country like the USA and not all cities and areas are the same. Thanks again for sharing with us! Good luck with your search!

Hola Jose! I hear it all of the time. "It's gotten too expensive to live in Mexico!" They are looking for some type of an excuse. Inherently change is hard for most people, they would rather prefer the devil they know over something unknown no matter how much better they know it could possibly be. That's understandable but people who say this are mostly just basically afraid of the change. Even with the rise of the pesos value it's still very affordable to live a happy, peaceful and fulfilling life in Mexico. I recommend to people teetering on the fence that use this excuse of not doing it, at least visit so you know what you would be missing and getting yourself into. And to others who know they want to live in Mexico I say "Don't wait or the time will never seem to be just right!" I may age myself here but the old Life cereal commercial rings true "Hey Mikey! He likes it!" I'll also give a nod to Frank..."That's life, that's what all people say. You're riding high in April, shot down May" Give Christian a hug and that way you'll get one too! Mucha suerte desde la hermosa Ensenada!

I live modestly and don't spend on frivolous things like Starbucks, Uber eats, new cars, etc. I've thought long and hard about moving to MX and may in the future. Biggest offense was paying 5.25-5.50 per gallon of gas in mexico and the main road between cojumatlán and Sahuayo was totally potholed and where its not potholed the AC is so uneven your car just rattles all the way even driving slowly. What a shame almost half the cost of gas is tax and no fix the road.

One of the big advantages in Mexico is that many people are poor, so stores stock merchandise for poor people. Say you need a screwdriver. In the United States the big box stores have craftsman, pronto, or other name brands. You spend $5 for a screwdriver you plan to use once. In Mexico you can find a cheaply made screwdriver that will work fine for one time, and it will cost under $1. That $4 savings adds up over time. lots of items are that way. They may not be the best made, but they work now.
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels 3 месяца назад
That is very true! So many places just sell items that are for one time use or temporary use and it really does add up and you save so much more! Plus there are tons of other cost cutting customs that many people are used to already and it's not necessarily geared towards the poor but instead the practical and frugal. For example you can get yourself a cheap cell phone for under 100 USD or spend over 1,000 for a new iphone. Same goes for eye glasses, cars, tvs, and just about everything. Since most people are not trying to impress anyone else with "stuff" you can any item at any price range and not worry about what the neighbors will think..... because they are also doing the same thing. No need for a Craftsman $5 screwdriver unless you are using it daily everyday and need something that won't break on the job. Thanks again for sharing! Viva Mexico!

Exactly I don't feel bad for charging the amount that I do. For those who can not afford it they can simply watch all my videos and get all the information they need for FREE. My consultations are for those that don't have the time nor desire to watch all my videos and do their own homework and would rather just pay me to tell them everything they want to know. Other people who consult with me are individuals who can not find their answers online or have sensitive issues they need answers to. I am always surprised when people tell me they pay much more expensive consulting fees with other creators and they dont get any answers they are looking for and have found them to be a waste of time and money. I try my hardest to find solutions for everyone who reaches out to me and pays for my services. At the end of the day I feel I am providing a service many people want and need and whatever I charge is still much less than what others who don't resolve any issues charge. It makes me happy to be able to help others who are looking for real answers. Muchas Gracias for your kind words!

In the USA you better keep on pedaling because property taxes, insurances and car regulations/expenses are coming. In Mexico most people with a house can live 10 years for one year in the USA worth any of those expenses. If you couldn’t afford eating out 2 times per week in the USA don’t complain because you can’t afford to go out everyday and have your clothes washed and ironed. I agree, make Mexican pesos for now because it’s the most valued currency in the world based on a US dollar comparison.

I remember in one of your first videos someone wrote that after every presidential election the peso is devalued against the dollar, do you foresee that happening?
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels 3 месяца назад
It didn't happen this last election and again a lot of it also has to do with the US Dollar itself and how much value it is losing every year. I can not predict the future but if Mexico elects a President that continues this forward path and the US continues to print into oblivion I predict that the US Dollar will continue to lose value against the peso therefore getting less pesos for every dollar. Only time will tell.

Hows the inflation a pack of smokes (Winston ) were costing me 60 pesos a couple of years ago? In vietnam they're costing me only 24 pesos or 1.59 USD. I can see it now your wife 🎨🖌️ the sign arteagas lawn service 😆💯😊🎉🎉🎉👍😁

I live frugal already. I know people who spend more than I do on takeout food than I do for all of my expenses combined. I should be able to live off of a little more than half of what I am now in Mexico, but doing freelance work online doesn't pay much. I can definitely make it though, just need to put in the work.
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels 3 месяца назад
I totally agree when I first moved to Mexico I was stressing a bit on how I was going to make it just doing small online freelance gigs that didn't pay much. Until you quickly realize you don't need much to begin with and that a little goes a long way out here. I'm sure with inflation and price increases one might have to hustle a bit more but they can still make it. I was also doing my youtube channel and that takes up time. So if one were to only do freelance work they should have more than enough. Hope that helps!

The thing is, If Mexico isn’t considerably cheaper than the US for a similar lifestyle, then people won’t move there. They will just remain where they are.

Because you are my favorite full of common sense channel in Mexico I will not post compliments because compliments do not generate improvement even if I do have many positive things to say about Mexico; I don't agree with the " don't try to change the people" simply because we are as humans all brothers and sisters and we should always welcome constructive criticism. I love mexican people for many things but tonight when the bus driver was going to slow on my way to work because he was talking to his girlfriend sittin on the front seat and turning his head every other word I struggled containing my self and not going hit him! Enough with this family thing! Same with little shuttles the wife in the front taking two seats while we pile up sweating in the back. Be professional and less lazy God gave you an amazing country don't push Him to REPLACE you guys!

Mexicans also have to deal with things like this and most of the time just laugh it off or just succumb to it being part of the charm of living in Mexico. I see videos of Mexicans living abroad and they literally mention how they miss a lot of those things that some foreigners find bothersome or offensive. When visiting another country people need to understand that people there have a certain way of doing things and it will not change due to a few foreigners complaining about it. Even in the USA there are plenty of things that foreigners living in the USA do not like about the country and they either have to adapt to it and deal with it, or simply leave. Every country is the same. I am sorry to hear that you are not happy about this but it is what it is. Right now there are certain areas of Mexico that are being over run by foreign immigrants trying to change things and the Mexicans are just doubling down. For example in Mazlatan a bunch of rich foreigners are trying to get the Mexican Bands that roam the Beach to be quiet so they can enjoy the serenity of the beach all to themselves. So you know what the Mexicans are doing? They are coming out in Full Force and playing the music non stop 24/7 to show them they can not come to Mexico and try to change the culture. I suspect more of that to happen as more foreigners complain about Mexican Culture. Again I understand your concern and your right to complain but just letting you know you will not change Mexico, but it will change you. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

Most ex pads are not hard workers they’ve earned their pension, their Social Security and I guess one time they were hard workers but now they are in their high 60s or 60s 70s and they can’t work anymore. They’re just living off their pension or Social Security and I don’t think they can make it out there, I mean working and compete with the work of the of the people that citizens are but you’re right where they can invest in a little market or something but they don’t have the energy to rent or run themselves, so what happens somebody think somebody comes in and steals from them, and there goes the market so they have to be careful they wanna travel they don’t wanna get stuck in one place a lot of them have to stuck in one place the other thing is you’re right Jose the energy is not there no more the money is not there no more our dollar is going to shit our government US government But you know we have to struggle always everybody struggles the way they can and a lot of them can’t even get out of here in the United States because they’re Social Security can they don’t even own a piece of property so they can’t sell that piece of property and go over there and buy something so I don’t have to rentso it’s about something they don’t even know Reba

The dynamics are changing more and more each day. Every year the people coming to live in Mexico are younger and younger. In the past that was more true as Mexico was a hot spot retirement destination but now it is more attractive to the younger folk out there who just want a higher quality of life and more economic opportunities. The problem I see with the ex pads a lot of them are in the senior citizen type of situation. We really they don’t have enough money they don’t have the energy they some of them are ill that I over here when I used to live in Maddie, the people around me there were expired were ill they were they just couldn’t work at all day. They sat all day probably like me anyway and that’s what I see with people like that they can invest in anything because there, they’re too frayed to lose their money and only little money they have off of it until they die I guess

And a young expand well and all day they wanna come with somebody else and they want the other person to take care of it. I guess most of them you know are gay so a lot of them more gay, so they happen to have their partners and love ones who have who are in the older age so they’re the ones supporting the youngexpert
