Hot and Fresh in the Kitchen! Well, more like in the driveway. In my seemingly never ending quest for a running bus I'm braving the Texas summer heat to replace the ignition switch and check some wiring under the dash. Ever wonder what it looks like down there? Come on and see!

A true "old Volks" episode for sure. Usually VW bus issues don't get fixed on the first try. Glad you showed a for real experience, one that most of us have too. You might check those fuses too. Usually, or originally, the fuse block had only 1 or 2 red (16a) fuses, on the right side. The white ones are 8 amp. Thanks for another video!!

Okay off the top: since the engine will run if you push start it, this tells you that the fuel cutoff solenoid on the carburetor is working and the coil is getting power. So, there is power getting to the rear engine compartment when you turn on the key. Go under the bus where the starter is located and test to see if the starter solenoid is getting power. If it is and is not engaging the starter, the solenoid is possibly bad and needs to be repaired or replaced. If there is no power to the starter solenoid, jumper the starter motor from the battery directly to the starter. If the starter spins it is the starter solenoid. MAKE SURE THE BUS IS NOT IN GEAR!

Starter is new 12v, and may be DOA out of the box as it won't pop or spin consistently when jumped. I do have power back there measured at all "hot points" including the starter. Battery is holding at 12.79v but doesn't show a draw when the key is engaged. Wires going to the starter are all in good shape front to back and otherwise. Battery terminals are new and tight. My money is on that mess at the headlight switch. New switches and relays are on the way.

@@OldVolksTV Here is a link to the wiring for a '66 the power goes directly to the ignition switch and back to the starter solenoid. Yes, power from the ignition switch goes to the light switch but not in series with the starter. www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/bus_66_USA.jpg

Well, sometimes bad luck makes for good stories. I have faith in ya, you'll figure it out! It's very hard to get motivated when it's so damn hot outside to work on it.

I would connect a volt meter across the starter and see if you are getting 12v while starting. If not I would find where the drop is . Check across connections,wires,relays and switches. Keep up the videos...great stuff

I'm going to replace the switch and relays, then check the voltage at the switch and the wires out back. I have a feeling something is either broken or cracked and shorting

@@OldVolksTV If your starter takes 100A to start at 12v , that's only .12 ohms. It would take only 0.012 ohms to drop 10%. Checking voltage drop from positive of battery to positive side of starter and the same for negative side would tell you a lot. Could be a good troubleshooting video.

Have you checked for power at the gauge? I’m not familiar with splits, but maybe try replacing any fuse related to the starter switch/gen. Light. I assume you get power to fuse box, from there to the switch, so my first guess would be go check that fuse (if there is one). As crazy as it sound, your dash-best looks much better than mine! I have a 71 bay and god, I shed a tear every time I remove my cluster. It’s BAD back there! Best of luck!

Any in line fuse's ? Sound line all road lead to the head light switch relay ! Hang in there!

No extra fuses. All the add on stuff has its own fuse block from a separate battery.

When you had the switch down you should test the power wire to see if it was hot . Its not the switch .

I'm thinking it's the headlight switch. Everything is melted on the back. I have a new one on order, as well as the headlight relay.

Over at HF they got a power tester for 5 bucks that has a light in it and that all you need to test it .

I have a meter. I don't want to put power anywhere until I fix the melted wires. Not trying to start a fire in there lol

Bus wouldn't crank even with a full battery. Ended up being a bad starter cable, but I had some sketchy wiring under the dash anyways so we cleaned it up.

@@OldVolksTVwhich starter cable? Battery to starter, starter to ignition switch, ignition switch to starter, or starter to alternator? I'm having the exact same issue as you were in this video. Installed new battery, new wiring from battery to starter and battery to ground, new starter, new wiring from starter to alternator and new fuses. All I get is a click when turning the key. New Switch is next but curious about which cable you had issues with. The look on your face after replacing the switch and it didn't start is the EXACT look on my face currently. Thanks in advance!

Have you checked your ground strap to the transmission? Maybe try a quick jumper cable from your negative on your battery to your transmission and see if it turns over. Also do you have a hot start relay installed? If so maybe it has gone bad.

It's new, but I'll give it a try
