Hey Guys. Today is part 2 of this series on the Ih and Case IH Utility tractors. I try to cover some more of the common issues they might have. Just some tips and things to look out for if you are looking to buy one. Again these aren’t all the issues they can have. I just tried to cover the issues I have seen.

My Grandfather, father and myself have owned IH/caseIH tractors since the 60's and my father and I who are both Mechanics worked for IH and CaseIH in New Zealand. A common issue that can arrise is a worn or faulty torque amplier(16 speed transmission option) generally a worn clutch pack or failed sprag bearing, there were weaknesses in the design but it was often due to driver error or abuse. The std 8 speed transmissions tends to be a lot more reliable. In the 85 and 95 series extra plates were added to the T/A clutch pack which made it much stronger and more reliable. Otherwise really good all round tractors. They were extremely popular here in New Zealand with a very good dealer network and back up service.

My 475 is losing drive when in Hi TA while doing loader work when shifting forward or reverse depress the clutch once or twice then it regains drive is this caused by worn seal rings on the shaft any ideas

Good info. You just did a great service to the viewers. I can't speak for the small IH tractors but very similar circumstances on the small MF tractors. They all have little problems and all break or wear out no matter what color. I'll remember this if I ever look in to buying a little IH!! Thanks for the vid!!!

I have seen some of them burnt to a crisp in salvage yards, I am in the habit of not letting batteries hooked up unless I’m running them. It put the quick attach battery ends on everything. It’s insurance anyway!

On our 885 we have to change our thermostat at least once a year. The 3 point hitch on both our 885/485 (485 is shorter) no issue s with it working. But it is always in the way of PTO attachments. Have a few bent shafts from that. Usually just take them off if we don't need them. Parking brake light is usally the switch gets corroded by the handle under the shifting levers. I just spray a little blaster on it and it will start working within a day. Thanks for the video!
@PAFarms
@PAFarms 6 лет назад
Yea that’s my biggest issue with the 3 point arms. They just swing around and bend pto shafts. I try to avoid 3pt equipment if possible. I took the arms off my 986 for the Baler. 885 is a nice tractor, I was looking for one when I bought my 685.

Great videos thanks so much! I have a 77 674 I purchased a couple months ago. I had to put a new tack in it aftermarket as the factory tack was almost $400 Canadian. My issue is this… it has a new cable but when I start the tractor it idles at 5000 rpm. Full out doesn’t even get to my yellow PTO line on the tack. Recommendations or thoughts? I love the utility series videos and you really have an amazing collection of International tractors. This is my first International, I was brought up with Massey Ferguson. Much appreciated! As testament to the durability of the 74, 84, 85 &95 series tractors, my uncle has a 784 he bought new in 1980. It's been a loader tractor since new. Definitely clutches. The engine ran 11000 and something hours before it's first overhaul. It has been nothing if not reliable. The only issue I am aware of that you didn't mention are the service brakes on the 74 series. They were a problem. I never knew them to be a problem from the 84 series on.

Man I loved your video BUT you broke my heart when you said replace steering valve vs re-sealing it. That's $1100 vs $80. I have a '88 model 585 with 650 or so hrs. I got it with 92 hrs. The tractor sat parked for 25 years after the owner drowned. Jam up little tractor. I have had a few electrical problems with lights & flasher control. Also resealed steering Cylinder, injection pump & replace inj return lines but that is to be expected on a tractor that sat unstarted for 25 years. I was surprised that it wasn't locked up. Anyway excellent & informative video sir.

we had our fuel tank welded on the 684 couple years ago. also done little front end work and years ago it seen some welding. i also replaced a injector leak off line last year. ours is a cold starting champ she has missed a few starts but a bad battery is why. needless to say i absolutely love my 684.

@michiganfarming1955
@michiganfarming1955 6 лет назад
PA Farms I have a break pedal that goes to the floor with no action. The other one works tho. How do you go about bleeding them?
@PAFarms
@PAFarms 6 лет назад
If you look at the area around the rear axle, right at where it bots to the housing, you should see a bleeder. It’s just like an automotive brake bleeder valve. Usually you have to take a pick and clean it out first, then open it and bleed just like you would a pickup. I can do a video on it. I have to do mine anyway. If bleeding it doesn’t work. From there you have to cap your line that feeds it to test the master cylinder. If that holds and your pedal is solid, then it’s the o ring on the brake piston....

I've got a 574 with the flange axels on the high clearance tyres it's a great little tractor only issue that it has is holding it on the road in road gear you have to be brave and concentrating when doing so it seems to want to wander from side to side any idea what the cause is it's had the steering wheel valve rebuild I was wondering it the cylinder on the tie rods had a bad seal on the piston and oil was getting past causing ram to lose oil and steering position thoughts ?

Hey PA Farms. New subscriber but have really enjoyed the content. Been a big help for a new Case IH 885 owner. Have watched most of your videos with the 685. Are you able to make a video or do you have one on flushing the coolant system for this series? Thanks!
@PAFarms
@PAFarms Год назад
Hey, no I don’t think I have a video on that, I had changed the coolant in the 685 a few years ago, there should be a drain plug on the side of the block on the engine, I like to drain it there so you get most of it out. It’s lower than the radiator drain. They sell all kinds of flushes but I just change the coolant more frequently and it should be good.

Sir, I have a 464 with POT problems, it just keeps turning slow with the engine running. I cannot stop it or engage it. It is like the handle will not move! Also, when this happened, the clutch on the tractor just went to the floor! Any idea what it might be? I am not a mechanic. Do not claim to be... I love this small tractor and it has more power than I need. It is a 3 cylinder diesel. I used to cut hay with it, but now more just pulling my 6' mower. I noticed the mower was not cutting when in heavy grass......the PTO was not turning fast enough to cut.... now it barely turns the blades...I believe it is about 51 years old. I got it about 18 years ago and have had no problems with it..... I need help LOL

These are great videos. I have a 1985 Case IH 485 and there are lots of similarities with the Case's and IH's in the surrounding years. Lots to learn from your videos for sure and I have subscribed. I have a question stemming from an observation of my own tractor. When I use the PTO for something like rotary cutting, the center console between my feet gets very very warm (hot) after 30 minutes to an hour of use. My hydraulic oil level appears to be fine and PTO and hydraulics still appear to work normally as the heat increases. Do you or anyone else experience this heat as well?

@PAFarms
@PAFarms 6 лет назад
I think you have the issue figured right. Does it sound like its getting air bubbles when you raise it? Try an experiment, put some weight on it and lift it up, while it’s acting up, turn your steering wheel back and forth or pull your hydraulic remote lever and see if it stops. In the Mvc valve on the side under your hydraulic filter, there is a priority valve in there that sometimes sticks. I’m trying to remember but I’m thinking steering has priority over others.... if it’s still the same, maybe the seals on the cylinder inside

It’s basically an IH design all the way to the 4210, 4230 series. Basically under the changes in hood design and sheet metal, they are still very similar to the IH 674. Once they went to the c50, c60 they changed to a Perkins engine. Probably because of emissions. These German engines are smokey

@PAFarms
@PAFarms 3 года назад
Some had a coolant filter some didn’t. The shifting linkage might just need to be lubricated. They get hard to shift sometimes, the linkage is a little complicated and has a lot of places it can bind up, as far as adding a valve, it can be pretty costly, if you can find the parts used it can easily be added
