This song is difficult to sing, especially the way Mandy originated it: super belt-y. The ones who fared best were naturally high sopranos. That being said, I give all of the Ninas props. Lin Manuel writes songs like a rapper: lots of words very quickly, and when you’re consistently higher on your range and spitting out the notes and words all while attempting to maintain equal strength to each word...it’s tough!

Courtney Reed and Gabrielle Ruiz also were also understudies for multiple roles. I know Gabrielle also played Carla and understudied Vanessa. Not sure if Courtney also understudied Vanessa but I know she also did Carla. A lot of the understudies know multiple roles.

Pyfacefornever she became Nina for the closing cast in London, and she was phenomenal! That recording doesn't do justice. She was literally an angel!!

Update: I went back to London and saw the show an additional 8 times which makes it 13 times I've seen Gaby absolutely slay it as Nina. She's improved SO MUCH since this recording/I first saw her in July and she is honestly such a powerhouse now. Those high notes in When You're Home and When the Sun Goes Down, oh man. She IS Nina Rosario to me!

I saw her in London and she absolutely BLEW me away. I immediately sat up when she starting singing and was like "okay she's REALLY good her voice is beautiful" it's just fluid and powerful and she embodies the character so so perfectly. And that's considering the rest of the cast was so strong too. But her voice has this vulnerability but also this smooth power to it that is so captivating. I cried during Breathe and I wasn't expecting to so early on in the show. She is absolutely STUNNING.

Idk if it’s the case, but it feels rare for a principle cast member to stay in the production as a principle role (not an understudy) which is why I find it so interesting that Janet went from originating the role of Carla to becoming the principle actor for Nina (which might I add is more impressive by the difference in personality and mentality)

I think no matter what, I think the OC cast from any musical will be better than everyone else. It’s because that person sets the character and it’s hard for other people to hit that exact set up. They had lots of good ones tho!

Virginia Cavaliere wasn't the best singer or actor of the group, but I feel like that role was made for her, she fits it so well (that's just my opinion and how I personally imagine Nina to be!)
