Illmatic is the first album by American rapper Nas. It came out on April 19, 1994, from Columbia Records. Nas worked on the album in 1992 and 1993, recording it at different studios in New York City like Chung King Studios, D&D Recording, Battery Studios, and Unique Recording Studios. Many producers helped make the album, including DJ Premier, Large Professor, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, L.E.S., and Nas himself. Illmatic is a hardcore hip hop album with lots of complex rhymes and stories about Nas's life growing up in the Queensbridge Houses in Queens, New York City.

Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones, born on September 14, 1973, is a famous American rapper known as Nas. He's highly respected in East Coast hip hop and is considered one of the best rappers ever. Nas, whose father is jazz musician Olu Dara, started his music journey in 1989 using the name "Nasty Nas." He made demo recordings with the help of another East Coast rapper, Large Professor. Nas's first featured appearance was on the song "Live at the Barbeque" by his group, Main Source, in 1991.
