IPR 85% testing the Ford 6.0 Powerstroke diesel

The engine needs 500 psi just idle, it can usually achieve this with 22-28% commanded IPR. Once the icp voltage is confirmed to be .18-.26 about a 1/4 of a volt key on engine off and it has base oil pressure filling the oil filter housing, we can start looking for leaks or restrictions. The ipr commanded to 15 or 85% means it could not reach the desired or programmed pressure. 15% is open or dumping pressure. usually a bad ICP signal/sensor. 85% is fully closed and could not the pressure asked for. Most of the time on 03/04 is a pump. 05 and up is a leak. Bad IPR every now and then or now with the doorman crap out there I'm seeing restricted flow from plugged screens in the IPR which means a plugged screen under the oil cooler. With this video it should help you to see common failures and get you an understanding or what is going on and what to look for.

He is still helping people. My 04 has air coming out just like his example. Thank goodness it wasn't the pump like he said it is most likely on the 04.

Joe Henry hi Joe this is Brian from Michigan anyway I've got a 06 powerstroke 6.0 no start life got major air like boiling water coming into the fuel filter housing it seems to be originating from tank which is 3/4 full I'm thinking cracked pickup tube have you seen this before

when trying to crank is 85 on the ipr good or bad, ive seen some conflicting guidance. could gas in the rails be the issue, since my nephew put gas in the tank.

Robert riccardino gas in the tank will not affect the ipr on time % that only has to do with the actuation pressure on the high pressure oil side

@@brianmcginnis9908 I know this is too late of a answer but if you have air bubbling in your fuel filter housing then you have a failed injector. I am assuming you are cranking with fuel pump turned off. then you remove the two outlet lines at fuel filter housing put a ballon over them and crank the engine the side that blows up the ballon is the bad side.

Another thing to look at from the last post, so this is what the problem was the cam sensor Oring, which is above the starter motor on the passenger side between the engine and the fire wall, this was leaking oil on to the starter motor causing the start to short out, but the starter would still turn the engine over, but the starter would not turn fast enough to turn the motor enough revolutions, that why the SYC was at 0, so check your starter you can check how many amps it is pulling when turning the engine over, mine was 750 amps when it should be 350-400 amps the starter shorted out from the engine oil from the cam sensor

Ron will bad dummy plugs also cause a low power condition? Btw great videos! Thanks for them, they have helpped me out with this 06 F250 6.0 a customer brought to me. I normally don't work on diesels but it's a friend of a friend so I'm just trying to help him out. I just finished installing a new oem oil cooler and egr cooler. While in there I also replaced the IPR screen/orings. Going to test drive it today for a bit to see if the power came back and that the CEL stays off this time. Lol. A dependable diesel shop replaced the egr valve due to egr codes. Well the CEL came back on while they were on a test drive. The shop told him they could either do a egr delete or replace the parts with oem ones because since the new egr valve didn't to the trick the egr cooler must be plugged or it failed. Which they were right, the cooler was 100% blocked from carbon build up. I quickly inspected the turbo and the shaft spun good and there wasn't any leaks on the exhaust turbine. Should have watched your other video about the VGT and how it can cause a low boost and low power condition. Crossing my fingers it runs better.

Heres a little tech tip also. If you are doing dummy plugs and stand pipes, if you order the LCF dummy plug and stand pipe kit its cheaper then if you order them part by part because you cant get a kit for the 6.0. The part number from ford is 6E7Z-9A332-B

I'm a pretty good diesel guy when it comes to the 6.0 and 7.3 and the 5.9 Cummins but when I got a head scratcher of a problem I always refer to diesel techron!

hey ron great video I work at a bus company with lots of 6.0 litres I did my first stc fitting and dummy plugs I went on online did some reading found that people put 12 volts and a ground to the ipr I noticed the air changes when I did this in your video you didn't do this was I just wasting me time or did I do something wrong thanks

I have a question on my 2006 6.0. It hiccupped a couple months ago and ran fine after that. Now the other day it started to run real rough. Bully Dog says #5 contribution failure. If I do a crank key out the engine has a definite lope. If I do a crank key out hot the lope is almost gone. Truck has never been pounded on and been very well maintained.

I am going to start working on diesel soon I am gasoline tech, My question is when you do the air leak test I believe you remove the ICP and connected the air leakage tester there, also you commanded open IPR with scanner is that right ? how about high oil pressure pump leaking or weak will you get it there too if you remove the oil filter will that be normal for air coming out there I was wondering because you are pressurizing high side?or can you also install the coupler air tester on the IPR too? does it matter thanks.

I just repleaced egr and oil cooler, i had no ficm sync i played wityh the wires and got the ficm to sinc now i have ipr over 85% i kept it extremely cleaned and changed oil and i dont have one of these adapters. Any ideas?

You said there should be normal air leakage around HP pump on the gear side, is the air leakage coming from around the shaft seal or is there a bleed off port near the gear? Thank you for the help.

Hi Ron i'm doing the air test and air is coming out of the 2 top oil return holes on the injectors is this normal? they start hissing about 4 to 5 mins after introducing air.

I got a 7.3 and took off the icp sensor and crank the engine and a little oil came out it didn't shot out dose that means its no good,and should i replace the ipr as well

IF THE IPR IS BAD WILL IT ALWAYS THROW A CODE OR WILL YOU JUST HAVE HARD START ISSUES

Ron, When it comes to powering the IPR valve if you don't have access to an IDS how do you go about it and what are the rules if you use 12V what is the time limit and what amount of resting between? Then if you have one of the tools like the OTC one for supplying power to the valve does it also have a time limit?

I know this is old but I got an adapter that went in place of the IPR instead. That way I didn't need to apply the 12 volts. Worked great. I got 1 on amazon for $10. The threads on it sucked for the air connection. It only went on r threads but held with teflon tape. I also went and got a swivel whip hose item 98944 from harbor frieght and a full port ball valve along with the 1/4 air input connection. Ball valve 63553. Hope this helps someone in the future, it would have saved me some time knowing it.

Is there any way you could provide a step by step process for the removal of all parts/components just to get this far? I know with experience comes some tips/tricks and I'd like to not go about removing a bunch of unnecessary things just to get down that deep into the engine. Thanks Ron.

Can a p0528 fan speed sensor code keep the truck from running...truck just shut off as it was driving and that is the only code I see...just replace the whole fan clutch?

I have a 2005 ford 6 liter diesel I have done many upgrades just lately it's been hard to start and now it's no start. I bought a scan gage readings when turning the engine over are 84.7 IPR 48.5 FMP 0 SYC 1647 ICP any ideas on where to start or look

Hi my name is Jimmy I took off my passenger side high pressure oil rail to do the ball seals and I found a spring in there with a little a little flat foot that stuck on the bottom of the spring. It has good pressure over 600 while turning it over but my by iPR is at 85% any idea what that spring is or where I could have come from

I have a 2005 6.0 it won't start on its own. But it will start with ether. Then stay running. I'm running 24% ipr warm at idle. Is there an HPO Leak?

Hey Ron could a no start hot be a ficm what are the chances. When it occurs it’s not a constant crank and it sounds like a voltage issue (batteries are good)

Sadly Ron passed away a few years ago, but I will try to help. A no start hot could potentially be a ficm, but it's more likely to be a high pressure oil issue. Do you have any way of reading ficm volts when cranking?

In vans. The passenger side valve cover removal requires the drivers side engine mount to be removed. It lowers the engine away from the body.
