I shot a lot of Agfa BW back in the day and I liked the results. I also used Agfa papers in the darkroom, my favorite actually. Thanks for sharing your experience.

It's no doubt a good film. Just the 400 didn't work for taste or didn't work well on the situation I used. The 100 was pretty good. Tell me, where there other stocks from agfa other than the APX?

@@WTFphotography Well, that's a long time ago and I don't remember other that APX. I think I only used the ISO 100 version.

@@mattisulanto Right! Yeah, the 100 was good. I liked the results and wasn't as hard to work in post than the 400.

this film has unfortunately nothing to do with agfa, that is why the box says "agfaphoto" and not agfa. they just license the brand name and reroll kentmere.

You should know Never to use a squeegee, use a Chamois leather (pre soaked and rinses out) and shoot APX 400 at 200 with a reduction in dev. time to tame the contrast and use a Hardening Fixer.

My experience with Agfa APX 400; using different developers: extremely sharp and beautiful grain, but not much dynamic range. Nice result if you like that contrasty black and white look.

Precisely!! The negatives look beautiful, but at the expense of dynamic range. I don't think it works for me but, never say never, it might be the right film for some applications.

Nice man! I'm wondering how the 400 would perform on studio. Yeah I know, why using 400 in studio, but I would like to see the sharpness applied there. Do you think that the 100 gives algo more sharpness if compared to the foma? Nonetheless thank you for the amazing work brother. Always good to see your work and learn from the pro!!

I don't see a problem using a 400 ISO film in studio, I have done many times with HP5+ and Fomapan 400. I don't think the APX 100 renders more sharpness than the 400. Maybe the super contrasty nature of the 400 ends up making it look sharper, in a way it's like I had applied some clarity on it. But the 100 is much smoother in that sense, even tough it's more contrasty than the equivalent Foma.

Years ago, the Agfa APX B&W films were superb. The film labelled Agfa APX today is not the same thing. It's made by whoever, then put in an Agfa box. I haven't used Agfa film since they stopped making it themselves, so I've no opinion on the relative quality of the current films.

there is quite a bit of rebranding going on for while. I mean even Fuji is using kodaks rebranded films nowadays... 🤷‍♂

Agfa? Agfa as we knew it (and my dad was an avid user) ceased their operations in regards to photographic materials in 1996. to my knowledge. Rumour has it, those films that are being these days marketed as Agfa are manufactured by a third party. Some say Foma, some say Ferrania. My personal bet is on Ferrania given the well known thinness of their films, but I could be wrong...

I tried to find out who is actually making it but I didn't find a definitive answer. I doubt a little that ferrania is doing, as I remember they were trying raise money by crowd funding to get the factory working and at that time I was working in a photo shop and we had APX films for sale before that.

@@WTFphotography So who else is left? Fuji and Kodak are definitely not doing that, and I doubt Ilford as well. So someone in Russia maybe? Now that would be interesting...

@@tomislavmiletic_ I actually read something that Harman (yes Ilford) was doing it, but I couldn't find a trustful source to be sure. Could well be Foma, but the characteristics of the film is very different...
