Wow that's a click bait title! I did hear Gwin's mechanic tried the idea but I've no idea if it's made it onto any of Aaron Gwin's race bikes yet...either way if you're looking to push your riding harder or just have a bit more security for that all-or-nothing race run then I hope this tubeless idea can help.

Best tip I can give for tyre mounting is to use a water based lubricant intended for the sexy times... It evaporates out easily and leaves very little residue while being extremely slippery initially, it's cheap as chips at your local convenience store or supermarket ;-)

@rollinrat4850

emanuel corlat non tubeless tires can be made to work. Thats whats awesome about ghetto tubeless. It can be done for a low cost. Technically,You can use any tire and rim as long as you can get the correct fit. Nice and tight but not TOO tight! Non tubeless tires usually have thinner sidewalls and dont retain air as well. You will need to pump up tires more often, but you should check pressure EVERY RIDE anyway. The thinner sidewalls may also weep sealant which gets messy. Tubeless tires seal better and fit better. Theyre worth the extra money but use what you have the 1st time to see if this is for you. You can even find recipes for homemade sealant. Although its kind of a hassle. Inexpensive wire beaded tires often dont fit rims as well and are obviously built to a lower quality, but again, they can work. ALL THIS STUFF REQUIRES PATIENCE. It requires trial and error and the aspiration to dial in and perfect your procedure. Since we’re adding glue and rubber to sidewalls that may just do the trick. Im going to try this! Ive been doing this set up minus the gluing and just trimming excess tube to the rims edge. The hardest step is trimming nice and cleanly to try and not make it look like a child gnawed it off!!

Pretty cool idea! I personally would try to trim off a little bit of the excess tube for a cleaner look. I agree with others, I love the idea of a tubular meets clincher hybrid. Would eliminate the need to tape rims, while still having all the benefits of tubeless.
@Nickporter17
@Nickporter17 5 лет назад
What if you got manufactures to add an additional extruded flap or a “loose” snake skin strip or something so you could glue the tube to the tire, then glue the extra strip over the tube? The loose tire side wall strips could start at the edge of the side lugs or half way down the side wall and stop just above the lip of the rim. Would look clean and be layered for real side wall protection and triple air retention.

I've never tried tubeless although I've been thinking about it for a year or two now especially after seeing your first tubeless setup! Brilliant idea and possibly the future of tires! Knowing myself it will be ages before I actually try this but I'll post something when I do.
@rollinrat4850
@rollinrat4850 3 года назад
Prestretch your extra tight tires by mounting the tire with a tube 1st. You can put your tires in a hot place like inside a car on a hot day or toss 'em on a hot roof. Let thermal expansion do its thing. It really works!! Now try to mount it on the split tube with a bit of soapy water if necessary. ALWAYS inflate and seat the beads without sealant. If it holds air for 15 minutes, it's probably a reliable set up. Ive been using these set ups for 20 years, but I just cut off the excess tube. No gluing. I never ever get flats, I never knock on wood. I do huge back country rides far from help or cell service. Only failure I've had is ripped tires. Its the Best tubeless going for long distance trails and touring. I also do it on 'cross and gravel tires. Its well worth the extra effort!
@tychoMX
@tychoMX 5 лет назад
Going to try this in CX! Just cut the remaining flap shorter, tight to the bead. Thanks, great suggestion was using thin latex liners with normal latex sealant but this is way more sturdy for the big, off-camber hits that result on burps. One more idea - maybe use your old patch kit glue tubes for this :)

I've successfully done this with a set of Rabbit Hole rims and Knard tyres in case anyone out there is wondering if it works. I used a rimstrip instead of tape, and didn't use vulcanising glue but trimmed the tube almost flush with the rim. I haven't had any issues but haven't been running super low pressures. You could also trim the tube a bit before gluing it to the tyre to make it a little more neat

Can you put the tire on the rim before you fold the inner tube back over the rim on one side? I know that would be fiddly as well but might be easier?
@adipe3217
@adipe3217 4 года назад
Bear in mind that the inner tube layer is compressible and this can be of help while mounting the tire, one more reason to apply the proper, enhanced technique which is proven to work: pull the tire as to push the beads in the rims groove'/channel while also pulling radially on the tire, making the tire eccentric to the rim. Start with the opposite side to the valve and end up on the valve; pull the tire as to have it STRETCHED and therefore pressing on the cut tube because of that stretch it has. You need to work in stages, pull away the tire from the rim and also pull the tire upwards towards the valve. That is if you have the valve at the top. You may push with your feet (mind the spokes though) on the rim to keep it on the floor as the tire is pulling the rim upwards because you are pulling the tire as to help with that temporary eccentricity as you work your way towards the valve in maybe more than one cycle. INSIST and have more than one go in helping the tire be stretched all around the rim, from the opposite side of the valve and onwards, not have it stretched just near the valve. That is because the friction keeps the tire from moving (for the eccentricity between the tire and the rim) as to have it pressing as hard as possible on the interface at the opposite side from the valve.

When the tire is real tight try prestretching with a tube inflated inside and leave it in the sun or in a hot car for an hour or two. That almost always works! Air pressure will stretch the tire and thermal expansion does its thing!

I would've thought there would be a layer of glue inside, between the rim tape and tube, as well. For extra adhesion against rolling off entirely. Same reason road racers use tubulars if the tires lose air, the tire is still glued on.

Ive used ghetto tubeless for 15 years after I tried the marketed versions of tubeless. I havent had ONE FAILURE in 15 years related to my tubeless set ups. Ive torn 2 or 3 tires in that time and those tires are wrecked no matter what set up yiu use. Out in the field I put in a tube, put in a tire boot or stitch up the tear to get me home. I wrench in a shop. Ive tried most of the tubeless systems on the market. Ghetto is the best and most reliable. It is a little more hassle but worth the effort if you like high performance, no flats and high reliability. However , its not for everyone. You have to be willing to experiment and maintain your set ups to get the best result out of your particular rims and tires.

Less than the weight of an entire tube plus sealant. So it's probably about the same weight. No worries. Go ride more. You now have a system you can truly trust. Ive had no flats in 15 years! If you try to save lots of weight on a tubeless setup you will have an unreliable set up. Weight weenies always slow rides down with all their tire problems or they ruin them and cut rides short. Ghetto is all about reliability and comfort. Ride MORE, wrench less,that's the key.

I love the idea too I was thinking : Why you don't use tube and sealant combo (sealant inside a tube)? Hey it s heavy bla bla...

maybe you should heat the tire a bit with strong hair dryer or heatgun on low.
@TheButlerNZ
@TheButlerNZ 3 года назад
Kevlar/wire reinforcing doesn't change circumference with heat but the tube between the tyre and rim enlarged the rims diameter making the tyre now too small to fit. There is 'some' stretch.. but this idea takes that stretch to its maximum...

Why not use thin inner tube with sealant inside?
@marty9368

Because pinch flats are main issue with tubes .Sealant is useless for pich flats

Yes I experiencing tire burping with WTB rim...but I only do trail...ghetto system is absolutely good for racing! I know about ghetto before from fat bike thing when fat bike tubeless wheel is non-exist. But using glue is nice addition absolutely for race day it is a must. Can it just using very thin isolate tape? Like flexible HVAC tape... Can not imagine how difficult to mount ghetto system using this day mtb tubeless rim and tyre... absolutely pain in the ass...

Homemade tubular tyres?
@sapinva
@sapinva 5 лет назад
This will make your wheel heavier than inner tube + tire. Why not go with thicker sidewalls instead, or combine the tire insert with the tube? Correct me if I'm wrong, but this just recreated the tubular tire without the benefit (or hassle) of gluing the tire to the rim. If this can work, then you could just as easily use a regular sized inner tube (glued inside the tire) to make a tubular, and then simply mount it to the rim.

sapinva Pros use tubs because its the best no holds or cost barred. The rim shape is stronger so you can use less material. There is no rim wall to pinch the tire. The tire when properly glued can be run at super low pressure for cyclocross. The main advantage is a completely round tire cross section which give tubs their awesome comfort, traction and handling. The drawback of course is cost ($100+ per tire) and time and hassle of installation. My shop charges $100 to install tubs and thats cheap considering the labor and liability.

Most riders would never appreciate the benefit of tubulars these days. Clinchers are coming really close to their performance. To really appreciate tubs you need to be pushing traction to the absolute limit the way only professional riders or very skilled riders do. Thats the only way most riders could justify their cost! The best handmade tubs really havent changed much since the old days besides rubber compounds. Its an archaic technology that has withstood the test of time. Back in the day clinchers werent so refined so the advantage was more apparent.

It's not the same, because the normal tube+tire is susceptible to snakebite flats. That's always going to be the problem if air is held by a tube instead of the tire casing. It even happens with tubulars (I ride them lots, no longer so much on the road but still on a CX bike) but they are less susceptible because the rim profile is not as "sharp" when bottoming out. If you trim the excess tube from the sides and you only cover the bead you still gain about half the weight of the tube, while retaining the benefit of sealant. This idea has a fair amount of merit for low-pressure applications.

@@Ali_Clarkson having some fun with Ali/Aaron reinventing the tubular, but I think in 1-2 years we will see something new that doesn't depend on air pressure
