As a layperson I struggled through the first half - but I persevered - and was rewarded with a brillant second half. I'm watching this 5 years after it was posted - a lifetime in science terms - and it was still stunningly relevant to practitioners and patients both. Thank you so much.

Hi Ivor......I have been on a low carb, no junk, no sugar (apart form fruits) and increased fat diet for 3 weeks, and there is a bit of a unusual problem......you see, I have all my life been able to eat a high carb, high sugar diet and NOT put on weight, my father was the same and my brothers are the same ! I can eat what I like and at 54 will still weigh 12 & 3/4 stone. So I have always thought I was lucky as this is a family thing ! So when I cut out carbs and sugars and eat more fat, I start to lose to muscle , my wife moans at me now saying I look to skinny . It is true that when I was younger I had to eat more cabs & sugar sometimes just to keep the weight on. I used to go down the gym purely to build up muscle as I was a bit to thin, so am now at a size and build which I like and do NOT want to lose to much weight and certainly not muscle........................it is a bit of a champagne problem to have, and it is genetic as my father was the same and all 4 of my brothers are the same.....we must have a high metabolism ! Can you help, as I do not want to lose any more weight and certainly NOT any muscle ? By the way , my father because he remained 12 & 1/2 stone all his life, eat what he liked and thought he was getting away with it, he got diabetes (type 2) had a heart attack, became type 1 , then had a heart bypass, 3 of his toes went BLACK , went into hospital last month to have his leg removed, got an infection then DIED ! I do not want to end up the same way so made the change ...........the only thing I have to sort out is this muscle loss (no much loss) problem.......should I eat a lot more fat then go down the GYM ? Regards Terry

I think the first solution consuming more calories than you are burning. It's a lot harder to eat 3000-4000 calories a day in high-fat, healthy proteins, because it's the nutrients that make you full, not typically the calories. So you'd better stuff yourself more! I think this is the best for maintainence. As much as carbohydrates are maligned for health, Ivor seems to make it clear in the earlier part of the presentation that it is an overload of glucose that is the problem; if the body cannot handle the glucose it is given, then you get all the maladaptations. Carbohydrates raise Insulin levels, which raises IGF-1, and a whole host of anabolic effects in the body. Thus, cutting out carbs completely may result in some weight loss because of the loss of anabolic effects. This is in a lot of Sports Nutrition, from the West and the East (Russia). They still recommend lots of carbs for performance, but do remember that high-level athletes sacrifice health for performance (no one really thinks that Michael Phelp's 12,000 calorie a day diet was healthy, but I think it was necessary at the time). I am not Ivor Cummins, but I have done some research on the other side of things, and both the late Charles Poliquin and current strength coach Matt Wenning state that only under 11% body fat can a person can go on a clean high-carb diet for muscle gain. Knowing what I know from Ivor Cummins, I would never suggest a high-carb diet but do realize that higher Insulin typically means big muscles as well as fat. There's a reason that bodybuilders are shooting up lots of Insulin, to their detriment (at least their muscles get big).

Excellent talk & excellent title: ‘Roads to ruin’ a title applying to many aspects of today’s world History (eg Roman history) tells us that corrupt societies always end in ‘ruin’ Dark age approaching?

Thanks Ivor ... a fan and do reference your web site ... but people want to know "Why Emperor?" ... how can you be a ruler over fat? ... but think of the revenue if you could "Tax Fat" ... 70 Going On 100 ... 70 going On 128 ... Hayflick Limit ... ... unless Ray Kurzweil is right and we just move to the "Cloud" and abandon the body ... then all this is a Moot Point ...

Great appreciation for all work you are doing to teach us. What causes the Immune response in adipose tissue? I have read in one article that lipopolysacharides that hitch a ride from our gut on the chylomicron cause immune response. Could this LPS arrival at the adipose tissue with the chylomicron be causing the focus of macrophage in the adipose? If this is happening then leaky gut could be the next level down in the root cause search. I have also seen presentations that point to glucose suppressing Vitamin C complex uptake in tissues causing the integrity of barrier tissues like the gut, artery walls and BloodbrainBarrier to become leaky causing inflammation response. If this is happening then Glucose suppression of vitamin C complex uptake is the first mechanism and sugar is excess and at the wrong time could be the root cause.

+presjo you seem to be trolling all the low carb videos and just wanted to address you here. "Prove that fruits worsen health parameters?" Well, it depends who we are talking about. If we talk about non-alcoholic fatty liver patients who've got fatty liver from fructose in processed carbs and sugar then yes any extra fructose will worsen their health. If we talk about healthy people then, no. You would probably need to eat a lot of fruit combined with starches to get a fatty liver. If you juice the fruits however, the story changes for healthy people as well. The biggest study of all to prove this is, nature and evolution. There were no times before where fruits were available all year long. With the supermarkets we lost the metabolic seasons. We need the "metabolic winter" to balance our metabolism and complete the cycle of putting on weight when food is abundant and lose weight through the fall and winter. The body has a negative feedback mechanism for winters or famine periods. It slows down growth and metabolism as soon as food is scarce. There is no negative feedback mechanism for food abundance, especially for insulinogenic food like starches and sweet fruits. Why? Because we've never, ever, in our evolutionary history had food abundance until recently. When humans found starches, typically in the summer, they ate as much as they could to prepare for winter. Low carb is the trick that can simulate winter in our modern times. Eating fat is equivalent to the body breaking down adipose tissue for energy. Intermittent fasting is another trick. For a diabetic person, whose adipose is completely broken, as per the studies in the video if you bothered to watch it properly, stopping carb intake is life saving. For a healthy person, respecting seasonality results in a healthier life. There is no need to avoid any type of food if it's in season. I hope this is a convincing argument for you as you seem to dismiss low carb as just a crazy theory. It's all rooted in science and evolution and adapted to our times. Low-carb == Metabolic winter

I was meaning proof as in peer reviewed evidence, not theories and ideas in comments section. especially since fruit and whole grains have shown to prevent diabetes, but also reduce symptoms in people who already have diabetes. these people seem to promote the idea that butter is some kind of health food, whereas fruit, tubers, grains is giving people diabetes. this is complete nonsense and fraudulent.

@ApaX1981
@ApaX1981 7 лет назад
@ Ivor Cummins If you could change 1 thing (ok, maybe 2) about the current food pyramid, what would it be? If I start to understand anything about it all I would say: bread/paste move up 2 levels. Maybe move fruits up 1 level. The whole very low carb movement seems a bit strange to me. Can't I put a cup of kidney beans in my salad?
@IvorCumminsScience
@IvorCumminsScience 7 лет назад
Dump bread and pasta - put meat, fish, eggs, olive oil, avocados etc. in a big base ! You can put some kidney beans in the middle somewhere - they full of fibre I believe and will turn into fat in the lower end of yer small intestine !

I agree with Ivor ... and would add "Dump" below ground veggies (exception might be onions), and tree fruits. All of these have been hybridized to be "Less Bitter" and "More Palatable", i.e. Hyper-Palatability ... chew a multi-min is you want to see what vitamins and minerals taste like then go eat an Apple ... quote Mark Sisson ... "the apple is a Bag Of Sugar". If you want to determine what an apple use to taste like ... eat a crab-apple. 70 Going On 100 ... the Centenarian Diet.

Baloney ... high Carbs ... very low Nutrients ... There is No Known Carbohydrate Deficiency Disease ... just prove that statement wrong ...
@backfru
@backfru 7 лет назад
High carbs is low nutrients? thats baloney. fruit, tubers, legumes, whole grains have a plethora of nutrients you keep repeating the same 'carb deficiency disease'? What does that even mean? Your body loves glucose. it uses it quite well, and it burns cleanly. it loves it so much, if you restrict it by eating low carb, you create a stress response and your body will break down it's own tissues to get glucose That could be called carb deficiency sugar is not toxic, fruit will not cause insulin resistance Why do these people follow extremeist, fad diets? Just blame it all on the carbs? How about eat a balanced diet, and get plenty of exercise, sunshine, and rest You don't need this low carb rubbish. it will damage your metabolism, thyroid, and jack up your stress hormones .. all of which will damage your body MORE than what you think would happen if you ate some healthy carbohydrates

Nonsense ... there is no reason to eat modern hybridized carbs ... all are "Carb Bombs" that is not exist 100 years ago ... Seed are good but Wheat Seed or Oat seeds are 80% carbs ... Never existed on this planet ... even you should know what the original "Corn" plant use to look like ...

You keep repeating the same, tired old phrases prove it Prove that fruits worsen health parameters
@carrollhoagland1053
@carrollhoagland1053 7 лет назад
You never answered My Proof request ... but an apple is 25g of carbs with Low Nutrients ... same with Wheat Seeds ... now 80% carbs ... and hybridized with NO concern for Nutrients ... Prove that wrong ... and Eat a Crab Apple is you want to see what the apple use to taste like ... or chew a Multi-Vitamin is want to see what vitamins and minerals taste like ... Remember Hyper-Palatable foods ... stop being stupid and start learning ...
