Things don't always go to plan. Sometimes It's thing out of your control that stops you in your track. But I have a plan to turn this frown upside down!
The paint is not too bad, you can just flat it down and spray over and keep the other coats as a "green primer". That engine sounds amazing already, even with the popping from the missing exhausts.
The paint is something to worry about (much) later as you are the only one who is going to worry about it. Been there Done that. Looks fabulous. Great job.
Even volume car manufacturers have this problem when changing from "solid" (non metallic) to metallic colours on the production line. This can happen when the colour change process is not as thorough as it could be, leaving small quantities of metallic flake to contaminate the next "solid" colour. This is more obvious on dark colours in bright light. I suspect something similar might have happened at your paint supplier, particularly if they were rushing to get the paint ready.
As a (former ) E Type owner for many years and series; the first miracle is the fuel pump worked - won't last, the engine cranked and third - it started. No oil leaks or fuel leaks - early days It's a Jag. Amazing! Congratulations.
HUGE bummer about the paint! I suppose the good news is that you have all the sanding out of the way and a really good ground coat of color. You should be able to scuff and shoot it without too much worry. The motor sounds strong.
When I saw the thumbnail I feared the car had burned or some other catastrophe. This is bad but can be saved. Good to see you’re still working on it. I’m looking forward to the continued series.
From a slight distance, it looks great. If you don't want the speckles in it, wet sand it down and respray. If the specks are all the way to the primer, then it's a stripdown & start over. Very cool machine you built.
once you know it will run, all the other stuff will get done fast. there's no more big question mark over the engine, wiring, fuel system, very happy for you. 🏁 get er' done!
Hi Danie, you had me really worried as I thought perhaps the troubles in South Africa had somehow damaged your car. I know repainting the car is a big job but I’m so happy that was the problem. I think you should have taken it to the show, perhaps with a note to explain the paint. It sure would have blown people’s minds. I’m glad it started, it sounds strong. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺
Thanks Stuart. I did actualy take it to the show (sorry I meant to say I parked it after the show). Got the most amazing feedback and responses I could have asked for! But alas I was constantly explaining the paint situation to the more keen eyed enthusiast
Looks like solvent pop. Maybe water in the paint. Heated air may help. Air dryer def. will help. There are some in-line moisture catches that can be attached. If they're fish eyes then there's contaminants. Pain the butt to cure w/o a heated booth and proper air drying equipment $$. Good luck-nice project.
I'd say all those inclusions are airbourne dust particles landing back on the paint. A dusty workshop is the last place to paint a car. At the very least create a dustless booth with sheet plastic, top and sides and wet the floor. Or do it outside. Still looks great.
Danie jy is die man. Fricken well done boeta! Jy het my groot laat in my broek bol met daai kombersie. Ek dog jy het die ding laat lelik seerkry. Ek Sal wragtag saam huil
The dancing ruled. A shame about the paint but as someone famous said, we do it nice because we do it thrice! It’s going to look amazing, from close and far.
Sorry about the paint 😞. I agree with others that a full strip isn't necessary. Is there any paint left in the can to discern if the paint has the flakes in it vs something from the spraying process?
Always exciting when they fire for the first time! I've always thought those straight 6 Jag engines are one of the prettiest engines around. As for the paint problems, that's why I build rat rods!😂
Thanks! It takes an immense amount of work to get panels straight enough to leave bare. I really want to do it one day, but first I need more experience.
I believe that you're underestimating yourself, my friend. I would LOVE to have your skills. Right now, I'm trying to remove a small dent from a 1950 Ford hubcap, without ruining it! HEEEEELLLLLLLLLLPPP!!!!!!!@@BroughBuilt
Very nice job on the replica. Definetly would just sand with palm sander and some 400. Thru the clear and re base it then clear it. 2 day turn around on that paint. Then let it cure for 3 days and reassemble. I dont even color sand and buff em. I spray the clear at 60 psi get real close to panel with wide fan and gun opened up and it lays out like Glass... i reduce my clear to drip off the mixing stick as soon as you turn it sideways. Thats how i mix the clear and judge its viscosity before i put it in my gun. Then i move real fast and close to the panel . Firat coat i usually dont get full wet coat the 2nd and 3rd want it wet. 4th coat usually is whatever clears left in my mixing cup and more reducer then normal so the reducer helps keep the whole job wet. But step 4 is not a required coat. Usually it looks great by the end of 2nd coat, i just keep spraying to build up a thick clear layer. So it withstands the suns damage over the years. Anyways cheers Danni!!!!
I am late to this party!! but i luv it, the British racing green does not look the right colour, could be the lighting, plus inside the garage, also maybe the camera, but i have subscribed, as i am interested,
@@BroughBuilt I thought u was making a XKSS until I saw the d type I was so. Upset but at the same time it was amazing seeing this project makes me feel like if u can do it. I know anybody can. It’s just gonna take time. and money It’s possible Just need the materials for it
Hello Danie, I am in a bit of a predicament. A friend of mine here in Oz is building AC Cobras. All the car manufacturers are gone and to get a certified windscreen for a cobra is non existent. Is it possible to get certified windscreens in South Africa. The guy is about to close his business and take it to Taiwan. Can you help please please please.
Hi Mike. The only guys that might be able to help is Superformance down south from us. they build and export so I assume their windshields are legit. just look for the website on Google.
The only good looking car Jaguar built. When people say the E type is beautiful I show them a picture of the D type. Enjoy only said it was beautiful so that Jaguar would keep on building it to bankrupt Jaguar, it worked.
A real masterpiece Now you need to throw away the carbs and either inject or go to a non vacuum activated carb that won't be out of tune every time you go around the block
