That’s the one I really appreciated about Juan and JT. Thomas is an incredible drummer in his own right, but he added to the chaos instead of being the consistent heart beat of the band. Juan will never return to TMV since Omar and Cedric don’t like him anymore 😭😭
Deantoni has a bunch of solo albums, he plays synth while playing drums, ive seen him play it live. I enjoy his work but i still think Jon Theodore is the iconic Mars Volta drummer.
@@AureliusR Yeah, I find his ghost notes don't come through so clearly in QoTSA, and he has to play very heavy handed so his incredible dynamics also don't come through. I haven't listened to the latest album a heap though tbh.
You gotta check out This Town Needs Guns (TTNG) Their drummer is Chris Collis and he is extremely original Songs to check out would be: Chinchilla, There’s No I in Time, and Triptych
Regarding the "head nod" comment, I think Omar used to have several signals like adjusting his glasses to signal ending a section or how many times to repeat a section
Yep, you can even kind of see everyone setting up for that moment and focusing on Omar as he hands off the droning chords to the loop. These guys are *tight.*
Jimmy Chamberlin - Smashing Pumpkins -- Silverf*ck. And hell yes on one of the 50 million Omar projects. The Apocalypse Inside of an Orange is one hell of a ride.
His album "You're Welcome" (どういたしまして) with Ximena Sariñana on vocals is a wonderful buffet of Omar's songs and a good introductory album for new listeners.
Absolute pioneers. This entire series of videos he released captured some of the most original music being performed at such a high level of musicianship.
Chops....haha, awesome! Thanks for another good one, man. Love your reviews. Going to send that to a friend who'll really love to hear that. Take care man!
Fuck I miss The Mars Volta. I can spend a day listening to their albums one after the other and get to the end and just want more. That's when I console myself with Omar's solo stuff.
Haha man you look like a lot of fun, cheers to you for making it through this shitty times and bringing some entertainment to all of us. Take this like as a cold beer for you Sr!
When he said "There's a lot of kids there." I thought the same thing. Then I realized in 2010 I would've been 20-21, so I would've been one of those kids at that show, lol! Time flies!
To answer his inquiry "I wonder how much of this is written & how much is improv": The intro & outro is written & played the same way every time. The poetry/words/mouth sounds Omar makes over the (for lack of a better term) verses/choruses clearly are made up on the spot over an established progression(s)... Lastly the middle section or "having a musical conversation" as Omar often calls it: The riff (& I believe the length of this section) that's repeated endlessly (clearly in the spirit of Afro Beat improv sections) on the Bass & Keys is the only pre-determined part used strictly to anchor the piece from descending into total chaos as the guitar soloing, improvised drumming & atmospheric noise being played by Omar, D & Lars respectively are all made up on the spot, every time . . .
Hey Garret! Much love from fellow percussionist here in Florida. Digging the videos lately. Also the Live streams are great. You got them sof ass jazz hands. 👍Stay safe and healthy. Hope you and the fam are keeping close to home. P.s. I'm racking my brain for my addition to your spreadsheet. Cheers!
at the time of release of this live album (You're Welcom or Dōitashimashite ) all songs had been released on studio, except this one. This is all improvisation. ;P
Would love to see your reaction to some Zach Hill from Hella/Death Grips (he also played in El Grupo Nuevo De Omar Rodriguez-Lopez & various other Math-Rock projects lol) or some Brian Chippendale from Lightning Bolt/Black Pus
it is worth noting that not all the oRL band sounds like this. much of it is actually way more song orientated than what is presented here. also deantoni plays bass via keys ala the doors for much of the current oRL band stuff
you should react to some of the Zildjian Live Season 1 stuff. Especially Larnell Lewis (the "linebacker" from Snarky Puppy), Thomas Pridgen, and Aaron Spears
Dirk (blast) Verbeuren! He's one of my favourite metal drummers, now with Megadeth, but I love his stuff with Soilwork. He's not as extreme or super technical as many you have done, but I love his playing. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PSrmsu7uQYM.html Soilwork - Long Live the Misanthrope
that show influenced me massively (played in a Mars-esque prog band for many years). I wasn't actually a big fan of Parks with the Mars Volta, but he's a monster on these records and the live shows are superb.
that was sick! crazy good player, music had a very jazzy, improv feel to itt. Check out some DnB or Jungledrummers, also jawdropping to me what they do on hi-hat variations sometimes
Please do Kashikura Takashi from Toe. He's probably one of the most unique drummers I've ever heard. The live version of Goodbye is just some of the most emotive drumming you'll ever see/hear.
I know you have a loooong backlog - if there's a chance, add Adam Jarvis (Misery Index; Pig Destroyer) to that backlog! "Misery Index - New Salem Drum Playthrough" can be found on youtube.
that was insane...man, you should check out one of this videos Marco Minnemann - Drum For Your Life (Performance) or Steven Wilson - Soundcheck Moscow - Craig Blundell's Drum Cam - Vermillioncore ....Love your channel!!!
That one kid in the audience is so bonked out on molly or shrooms...maybe both! You can see him behind dentoni around 4:14...he was the star of the show!
Wooow, my favorite song for my favorite artist ever (Omar Rodriguez Lopez) ! Please watch his Technoself projects, he plays drums and keyboards at the same time. I'd love to have your reaction to his playing in that other context. Deantoni is truly a one of a kind drummer. You should do other The Mars Volta drummers, Thomas Pridgen and Jon Theodore (now playing with Queens of the Stone Age).
Great drummer!! Love Mars Volta and Omar's projects. I recommend Jimmy Chamberlain from The Smashing Pumpkins, his performance of Silverfuck is legendary, I GUARANTEE you would love it. Very jazz influenced drumming but heavy song.
Maybe some love and a review for the dearly departed William Rieflin? He had a storied career with Ministry/Revco then REM, and King Crimson. He is practically a drum machine. A greater time keeper one will never find.
awesome videos man, greetings from venezuela, you should check out anything fron nate wood four he plays pretty much everything with no overdubs the guy plays the drums while playing a couple of synths and a bass all at the same time
You should react to Signs Of The Swarm - Cowards Deathbed drum playthrough. You will not be disappointed. Also any Lorna Shore drum playthroughs as well!
Great channel 👍 Mars Volta were excellent...Omar is the spitting image of my niece's boyfriend! ...my family were amazed when I showed them pictures at a recent wedding..please consider watching.. "Drum! Magazine" 2010 "Billy Rymer impromptu solo" Respect from England🐕🎵
Garret, you should check Dee-Ant-tony out in a band from the '90's called Kudu. They were AMAZING mix of jazz, soul, funk, electronica. Check out the track Surprise.
