1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 with 5.2 V8 and automatic transmission. Full info below...
Suspension Info:
Rear is on RE 3.5" XJ front springs. It has the IRO long arm kit with sub frame which allows fixed upper arms to be adjusted and the lowers are adjustable. Rear shocks are Doetsch Tech 8000 Prerunner Series part# 8403 which are 32" extended, 18.7" compressed, 13.3" of travel with integrated bump stops. Rear uses a Rusty's Offroad adjustable track bar. Rear drive shaft is stock with no issues.
The front is on RE 3.5" springs with JKS ACOS, Iron Rock Offroad long arms and IRO 3 piece subframe assembly. This kit has a one piece driver side control arm called the Iron Y which includes both the lower and upper arm in one piece with a caster adjuster. The passenger side uses only a lower control arm, no upper. Front shocks are Doetsch Tech 8000 Prerunner series part# 8421 which are 32" extended, 18.25" compressed, 13.75" of travel. The shocks are mounted to IRO bar pin eliminators. Extended stainless steel brake lines were installed to support the additional lift and flex. Front uses a Rusty's Offroad adjustable track bar with HD frame mount. Front drive shaft is a double cardan u-joint style to replace the OEM CV shaft which broke and also would not have worked with the long arm kit. JKS Quicker Disconnects which are adjustable are used on the front sway bar.
Steering Info:
Iron Rock Offroad OTK, over the knuckle, steering kit. The kit includes a 1.25" solid cold rolled steel tie rod and drag link with 5/8" grade 8 hardware. This required us to drill the steering knuckles on both sides as well as the drop pitman arm with a 5/8" drill bit. The kit is very solid and no steering stabilizer is being used.
Check out my other videos if you want more info on the steering box brace which has been a great addition since I'm running 35x12.50 tires. The steering box was recently replaced with a new one. We've swapped out the drop pitman arm for one that is about 2" shorter than the one we had installed previously because it will work better with my lift and IRO OTK steering kit.
Axle Info:
The front is a Dana 30 with IRO almost alloy Spicer 760x u-joint shafts, Solid diff cover, stock gears, and no lockers. The CV differential yoke has been replaced with a u-joint yoke for the new drive shaft. The axle will soon be rebuilt with 4.88 gears, and Aussie locker. The font axle also has heavy duty Rusty's Offroad lower control arm mounts to replace the bent stock ones.
The rear is a Dana 44 with stock gears and no locker. It will soon be rebuilt with 4.88 gears and Aussie locker.
Tires and Wheels:
35x12.50x15 Goodyear Wrangler MT/R Kevlar on OEM 15x7 wheels with 2" wheel spacers.
Jeep also has IRO on board air, Rough Country 9500 lb winch and mounting plate, Taurus 2 speed electric fan and B&M Supercooler.
5.2 V8 Engine Notes:
The motor is finally dry as a bone, leak free thanks to Joel Gonzalez!!! Oil pan was dropped and rear main bearing cap was removed because the two piece rear main seal was leaking. The rear main seal was replaced and a high volume, 25% over stock, Melling oil pump was installed. The pan was resealed with a Fel-Pro one piece gasket. The timing chain had some slack in it so it was replaced along with new timing gears on the crankshaft and camshaft. A new timing cover was installed with a new front seal to replace the original timing cover which had a hole in it. The original harmonic balancer was cleaned up and reinstalled along with the original crankshaft pulley. A new water pump was installed with a new bypass hose to the intake manifold. The thermostat housing was replaced along with a new 185 thermostat and Fel-Pro gasket. A new tensioner was installed because the old one was nasty to say the least. The original broken EVAP canister, damaged by the front driver side tire, has been removed and replaced with a new relocated canister. A new power steering pump was installed.
The motor also has an MSD external coil and K&N intake and air filter.
Muffler was a Flowmaster 40 series cutoff before rear axle, but muffler has now been removed. Exhaust setup from muffler to engine is stock with brand new catalytic converter.
Special Thanks: Thanks to my great friend and mechanic Joel Gonzalez for all of his hard work and dedication to Project ZJ. Thanks to Mario for selling me my first Jeep. Thanks to Nate and Mitchell for the awesome compressor mount. Thanks to Mark and Mike at All Muffler Service for their work on my exhaust and also for removing the stock lower control arm mounts in the front. Thanks to Rob at Les Schwab for all of the great advice and for doing my initial alignment. Thanks to Redline Tire for doing my final alignment and mounting and balancing my new tires. Thanks to all my loyal RU-vid subscribers for their continued support and comments!!!

I have a '97 ZJ that's seen too many MI winters. Was looking for a way to fix rusted out rocker panels plus other areas. Come across your videos. That's how I'm going to do mine. Thanks!

Make sure you put plenty of paint on the steel and welds when you're done to protect from future rust! Very solid fix!

It's all going to be treated with POR 15 then painted.

I like it , but you should definitely weld the top side under the doors.

+Zach Fitzhenry Everything has been welded up and they've been working great. Tested them out a few times on some hard hits!!

Looks good, Did you box in the 2x6 where you had to notch it out to fit flush against the inner rocker panel? Also with the 2x6 fully welded to the inner rocker panel there is no where for water to drain when water gets between the inner rocker and the 2x6, so eventually the inner rocker is going to rust out. And if the 2x6 is not boxed in where it was notched out it will rust out from the inside out and be full of water. I know my 98 ZJ has holes in the upper outer rocker panel where the plastic trim pieces are, plastic foot steps. If you pop out those trim pieces there are some pretty good size holes there where the trim piece snaps into. Just washing the Jeep and or a good rain would fill the 2x6 full of water if it was not boxed in. Even if it is boxed in you will still have water between the 2x6 and inner rocker panel since the 2x6 is fully welded from front to rear, bead attaching 2x6 to inner rocker panel. I'm Not knocking the work done, just wondering if you thought of that, did something about it that was not shown on the videos. I was going to do the same 2x6 rockers on my 98 ZJ but second guessing it now. I have Kevin's offroad rock sliders and they are rusting out from the inside out, due to water getting inside them. My passenger side outer rocker rusted out, it is currently cut off and ready to be replaced. I have a new outer rocker panel, my inner rocker panel also rusted out pretty bad and nobody reproduces them you can not get the inner rocker from the dealership either. I went to the boneyard and cut the inner rocker out of a ZJ there. Just need some time to weld it all back together and build new sliders. Let me know if you did something so water will not stay inside the rocker & 2x6. Thanks

+FLV8Jeeper Haven't had any issues with water getting inside or any evidence of rust but I've also had bare metal steering links for a while with zero rust on them so maybe it's a California thing. Good points, I've just never had any rust issues at all.

Been wanting these done for a long time now. Looks so tough and clean. Did u ever think about welding the top where the slider meets the door jamb? Would these hold ur weight or a heavy female if u were to stand on em?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 7 лет назад
Yeah I did end up welding the entire top side and they are super solid. Haven't had any heavy females on them lol but I think they'll hold just fine!! Main reason I welded the top was to keep water out and prevent rust.

I went with 1/4 in 2x8 (heavy af 🤣)

Maybe you’ve already posted it in one of these videos (awesome work btw), but what are the dimensions of the sliders (I know there 2x6 but how long)? I have a 94 ZJ that needs this done, and like everyone else I know a guy who can weld.

Also what was the angles on the ends?
@orygunchainsawmassacre6761

I imagine that these would stiffen up the whole jeep as well?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
OrygunChainsawMassacre I'm sure they help, but what you want for that is the frame stiffeners from Iron Rock Off Road. I've got some haven't installed them yet. Their long arm sub frames also help stiffen up the unibody a lot. Steering box brace helps too, acts like crossmember up front.

what were those boxes at the front and rear from the frame to the old rocker panels. They are cut off and plated over in this video. Are those structural? I want to do this but when I went in for inspection here in PA I was told those boxes are part of the frame, is this true? Are those boxes really needed?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 7 лет назад
As you noticed in the video we did cut all 4 of them off and noticed zero change in structural integrity. I should note though that I have heavy duty steel cross members front and rear, as well as a steel steering brace and winch mount up front, and a steel gas tank skid in the rear. All of these things add more strength and help reduce flex in the unibody. Your inspector may not agree with any of this though.
@ArticWolf24
@ArticWolf24 7 лет назад
ok thank you for the reply I'll have to call him and ask if I can plate them over as I forgot to ask when I was there. But nice Jeep. Did you well the top of the rock sliders to the body? I'd like to do what you did but lack of a welder won't help me I have the 94 Jeep ZJ Limited with the 5.2 Magnum.
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 7 лет назад
Yeah, we did end up welding the top side mostly to make it look finished and also to keep water out.
@Moffetmania1

How was the cost of the material and build for the sliders man
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
Jimmy Lewis The steel was just under $100 then you have to factor in cut off wheels for the grinder, sawzall blades, welding wire and gas, spray paint, and beer.
