Trekking through splendid high alpine peaks, alpine meadows and riverine forests is every trekker's dream, and the JiwaNal Valley of the Great Himalayan National Park Conservation Area (GHNPCA), provides a heady mix of challenge, stunning landscape, and an amazing variety of flora and fauna. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s great biological realms, JiwaNal is home to unique biological diversity, representative of the North-West Himalayas. In this webinar Sanjeeva Pandey, the world's foremost expert on the GHNPCA, provides a unique insight into this trail.
Sanjeeva Pandey, forester, environmentalist and an active conservationist, was instrumental in attaining the World Heritage Status for Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP). He has served as the Director of two major biodiversity hotspots in Himachal Pradesh, GHNP in Kullu and the Pin Valley National Park in Spiti. Throughout his career he has been passionate about biodiversity conservation of Himalayan environments, a passion that continues to drive him. He has also co-authored a book on GHNP with Anthony Gaston.

Great Himalayan National Park is a world in itself - challenging, scenic, serene, extremely rich in biodiversity, surrounded by very rich cultural traditions. Congrats and thanks Dr. Sanjeeva for bringing alive Jiva Nal valley, one of the lesser frequented treks in the Park, and one which is still eluding me. The mesmerising folding steep spurs and the Sartu Lake that I had the good fortune to see from helicopter with you during the field assessment of GHNP for inscription as World Heritage Site, are still haunting me. Salute to your lifelong passion for and contribution in bringing GHNP to its present state of recognition. Dr. G. S. Goraya

Congratulations Sanjeeva. Really proud of you. Those who know you can only appreciate your commitment for the cause of conservation. Involving communities in conservation is not an option but an imperative. You have proved it by leading from the front. But I think your efforts haven't got their due recognition... by the way you never cared for any. I must also congratulate your better half, without whose unstinted support it would perhaps not been possible. Siddhanta

Great work by a very learned conservationist, who is also credited for getting the Park the status of the world heritage site, of course well deserved. The video was a virtual trek in the valley with beautiful pix of flora and fauna, esp of pheasants. But could not make out the reason for naming the park as JiwaNaL.Perhaps since HP was carved out of Punjab the Punjabi translation of the name translates as- Living together(very app name). The IMF must purchase his book for the library. I wonder if Dr Pandy could give me some inputs on high alt medicinal plants of the area as well as of Sikkim, with his tons of knowledge. The contact details of the Presenter must be endorsed on the video, as repeatedly requested to the IMF.

As you are an IMF member you will be getting an announcement of this webinar where the email of the presenter is shared. Many presenters do not like their contact details shared online. If you would like the IMF to purchase this book this should be communicated to the IMF office directly via email.
