Merchant is like a joke assassin, he comes up with the funniest comment on whatever subject is being discussed, and just saves it until the moment for the "kill shot" presents itself.
I love how genuinely worked up Karl gets in these hypothetical scenarios with assigned roles Ricky always proposes acting out :-) It's why he was so naturally brilliant in _Derek_: he seems to forget he's playacting, and emotionally responds as if he's in the situation for real. Method acting at its finest :-)
yeah thats very true. the little scenarios ricky comes up with are great. like the congress tart kidnap scenario or the "karl, you wake up gay..." convo. hilarious because of karl
To be fair to Karl he's exactly right... What really inspires and excites scientists are the questions and the pursuit for answers, less so the answers or solutions themselves
Holocaust Preference or you could say it like: Karl lives in Narnia, Ricky and Steve in the real world. Your point would hold true if he only came up with concepts for an ideal world. But he also thinks up: lets have childrens whilst we're old and dying. Much better that. Great out of the box thinking, but he honestly sees it as a good idea, not as a concept. And only as solutions to things that annoy him, specifically. He doesn't even grasp the term 'analogy' fully. It's the difference between conciously thinking up 'weird' ideas (to get in a creative flow) and just having them pop in and out your mind.
ylangylang ylangyalng Ricky and Steve just play Devil's Advocate because they get the funniest answers from Karl that way. It is a comedy show, after all. They're not really making fun of him, they're just forcing the comedy out of him. Karl is like a comedy toothpaste tube. You have to give him a squeeze to get the comedy out.

@@abdihassan7208 Karl's attempt to explain the science topic resembles the story of Pinnochio. So, the joke is that Karl doesn't know what he is talking about at all and ends up drawing from the story of Pinnochio unknowingly to explain it

+jdw9 A bit of knowledge is dangerous than none because you don't have the rest of the knowledge. Only knowing one part of a concept makes you more ignorant of that concept without the rest of the facts.
He is actually right. To be wise and comfortable, we need to strip off knowledge we dont need. Its the same as the saying "Ignorance is bliss". Karl just like to word thing his own way. I think he's quite intelligent

+Daniel S I heard Karl and Ricky fell out because Karl got tired of being the butt of Ricky's jokes. Apparently that is why the moaning of life has no Ricky or Steve. Also based on what Ricky's other friends have said it's clear he's not the best person to be friends with and Karl has a very short fuse so I wouldn't be surprised if he cut all ties with him.
@@leoncrazyman07 if you go back and listen or watch Karl comes home #2, listen to the very end when he's doing karaoke singing Chaz and Dave! That really sums up in my opinion their relationship. You can really tell that Karl means what he's saying when singing those lyrics.

Steve's job for the past 10 years has been keeping up the professionalism that Ricky and Karl are never going to be capable of achieving on their own.
a line he uses a lot when ricky's garbling and karl's meandering gets too far off-topic and obscures the main point is "i got a bit lost there, can we...". usually, he personally is aware of what's going on, and the "i" is him standing in from an audience perspective, which is what enables that professionalism and clarification
@@benjaminqmorris I did that all the time in school. Ask questions I knew the answer to because I wanted the teacher to clarify or summarize a point for others. I think it was basically just my social studies and AP psychology teachers that caught on. XD

Ricky's comebacks and jokes are very large and sort-of shout-y, and often very funny, but I love the way Steve just slyly says little things that are hilarious.
Stephen is funnier than most give him credit for. He used to annoy me before but now I 'get him' and think he's hilarious :) These 3 together are the best. Like Snap , Crackle , and Pop.
Merchant is a pinochio of Richy Gervais, Without him he would be nobody.. But this trio is godlike.. and its all because Gervais is a fucking dick.. and the world love him for it
Anyone else feel like this is the clip that sums them all up? Ricky winding up Karl, Steve holding in his laughter in the background and then being the dark horse in the end. Wouldn't be complete without the famous Gervais laugh, not to mention Karl wanting to wrap up and go home.
The way I interpret the beginning of the discussion, Karl simply said the attraction of science was exploring the unknown - what's silly about that? That's what has motivated every great scientific breakthrough in history. Steve and Ricky are funny, but they can be very close minded sometimes.
it's not that Karl is wrong, it's that he always sabotages his message by saying it in a very funny way. his immediate example of this concept was basically "I stopped caring after the kid got legs" in a disappointed tone, of course they're gonna joke about that
I think it's so cute how Stephen stays moderately quiet and doesn't laugh too much but he has these really intelligent outbursts "This is no science this is Pinocchio." Classic lol.
I don't know what's more funny - The actual things Carl says, or the way Ricky cackles whenever he finds something Carl says that is really funny or idiotic.

I've been listening to these guys for quite a while. There are times when Karl is actually on to something... there almost seems to be a bit of genius there, but then, after a little digging and analyzing, his ideas always come crashing down in the most brilliant funny manner. Love watching the show on Friday on HBO. Always picks up my spirits with a great laugh or two.

The part of science Karl likes is the part that IS science.. The learning process, the problem solving. Once the solution is found, you can turn it over to engineers to make use of it while you continue your voyage of discovery. Once again, he makes complete sense.
Exactly, he likes the initial stage of a problem where he is free to formulate hypotheses, free to let his mind wander and discover potential answers. Once he discovers an answer, he gets bored and searches for the next problem. 1:16 - 1:35
