Vermintide dialogue compilation focusing on Kerillian, the wood elf waywatcher. Mixture of longer conversations and short voice lines, with her tenebrous backstory serving as the crux.
I wish you could tell her the same thing when she's in her Shade career. "It's not too late to choose a new path, Kerillian--a path that don't lead to the god of bloody murder."
@@KnightEnjoyer69 I'm not sure if it's the same in fantasy as it is in 40k but don't dark elves enslave and torture anyone they can so that they could gain immortality?
@@funnelingspace9268 no not really. The Dark Elves know their souls are lost to Slaanesh when they die, and they don't care. It just gives them more an excuse to inflict pain on others before their time is up, because even though they can live for thousands of years a lot will die to war, murder, and intrigue.
The new Castle Drachenfels maps in Vermintide 2 actually go further into her backstory if you listen to the demon's whispers. Spoilers ahead for those who want to play for themselves: Apparently, Kerillian witnessed a prophecy when she followed that Spellsinger that spoke of Ubersreik playing a part in the downfall of Athel Loren by the skaven. Kerillian took this to mean that the town needed to be destroyed so she led an attack on an Empire soldier caravan that was meant to reinforce the town. When the Wood Elves Council found out about these two events, they banished Kerillian who came to feel increasingly guilty over her actions. I'm not sure when the curse factors in but its implied that Kerillian is trying to avenge each and every innocent that died because of her actions (the reason she counts her kills) so perhaps she made a deal with Drakira to be paid in the blood of the skaven. Also, take this all with a grain of salt as it comes from a VERY untrustworthy source and is half extrapolations on my part.
Further spoilers... ... The whispered voices are Nameless, which is a reference to Drachenfels himself. Additionally, the voice suggests Kerillian heard a prophecy which said Ubersreik would play a role in the fall of Athel Loren and it did because the attack she launched was enough to tip the balance in favor of the Skaven and thus revitalize their efforts. In other words, Kerillian is directly responsible for Ubersreik being too weak to stand and indirectly for Athel Loren's fall. Basically, it's all her fault. Additionally, there is some hint that she held high rank among the Wood Elves. My pet theory is she is nobility in exile, and her joking about "Queen Kerillian" during the pub crawl mission is actually a little bit of drunken truth. The map also reveals each character is basically a guilty mess. Kruber has massive PTSD from shoveling men into the maw of wars he considers pointless. He's seriously considered just turning his comrades over to Chaos for coin, thinking the Empire is too weak to bother with, its rulers too corrupt, and that they would finally treat him well. Saltzpyre has realized he has sent innocent people to the pyre and has a crisis of faith. He is unsure if Sigmar can actually save them from Chaos, or if he really is a divinity at all. He essentially views himself as a murderer for having killed a young woman for being a vampire - and she wasn't one at all. Sienna has murdered her companions more than once in fits of pyromania. She feels the twitch to do so again. She has also killed an Inquisitor to free a friend...who turned out to be a monstrous witch and servant of Chaos - meaning the Inquisitor was right. Bardin messed up on a patrol and was nearly taken out by a gutter runner. His son was killed, and he failed to warn a hold because of his slack watch (a thing he yells at Kruber for). He is "hold seeker" because it sounds less awful than "exile."
@@carloscaro9121 Another thing that's related to this is when she mentions the dozens she killed at Hoggar's Bridge. Immediately after, Saltz remembers they were two Nuln Regiments, and is very pissed at her for it. It's very likely these two regiments were the reinforcements for Ubersreik... and Kerillian destroyed them. And about Bardin, I always thought he failed to warn the hold *because* of the injury inflicted by the gutter runner, not because of his "slack watch".
@@Dafuqinator7 No, that's really unlikely. Nuln would never send any soldiers to another province just to reinforce some other city. Nuln is literally ten times more important than Ubersreik. Also Kerillian isn't that dumb to blurt out something important just like that. And Saltzpyre isn't some single-digit IQ idiot, is these regiments were indeed sent to Ubersreik you'd THINK he would put two and two together.
She's counting every kill in order to match the ones from the battalion she killed. Same battalion that was going to assist ubersriek in battle, not that it would've helped.
As someone who's in love with VT2 (and, frankly, probably a bit addicted) and is fascinated by the depth of the characters' respective backstories and personalities, this was super interesting to watch! I probably won't play VT1, at least for a long while, so having a look at so many "new" voicelines (in the sense that I had never heard them before, even though they're older) gives me a whole new world of insight into the characters I know and love. And it's also very interesting to see how they changed between VT1 and VT2 - I feel like Kerillian is growing less arrogant over time. She's still arrogant of course, but she feels less "disconnected" from the others, "warmer", in a way. Maybe she's just growing accustomed to her companions and thus doesn't feel the need to berate them as much because she feels that they might "know their place" by now, or maybe she's actually grown to respect them a bit after seeing their deeds and valor, and sometimes deceptively deep wisdom (well, compared to what an elf expected from mayflies anyway). After all, meeting and living with new and diverse people is the best antidote to prejudice and preconceived ideas of superiority, no matter what world you're from... This is the first such video that I watch, but I'm definitely going to watch more (well, realistically, I'm probably gonna binge them all over the next few days). Sorry for rambling, but I wanted to thank you for the effort of recording, editing, and posting such videos ^^ To whoever reads this: cya and take care
"Lileath is my shield And Kurnous guides my aim But my soul That belongs to another." I like how the one word that would make that little phrase rhyme like a poem is "Khaine".
@@orangemafia9128 Khaine is not considered a dark god in the same way the Chaos gods are. That's more than likely in reference to Slaanesh and it's coveting of snagging elf/eldar souls depending on the continuity.
funny how V1 was slower, more methodical in a sense, compared to the slashing and bashing of V2 and even darktide. I kinda wish Darktide had some of that dna in it.
Darktide does have one thing neither Vermintide has; A sense of true dread and horror. Though that only comes to light (ironically enough) in the Power Outage special missions when all lights are out
Ugh, honestly I wish they'll just the entirety of Vermintide I Into Vermintide II, like they did with Left 4 Dead 2, because some of these locations in vermintide are just beautiful, Then again, there are also some pretty breathtaking Vermintide II locations but my point still stands.
While that would be pretty cool, looking at how greedy the dlc policies have been so far and the fact that vermintide I still costs 30 bucks, I don`t see that happening.
Every now and then I return to this video. Both games encapsulate Warhammer Fantasy so well, with 2 being a brighter setting even though the end is closer and 1 being grim as hell although there is enough time for repentance and some joy. Kerillian is also a fantastic character that we will probably not see the likes of for a while. Her mysterious nature added with the infamous elven arrogance solidifies her as the ultimate tsundere but still likeable to wish her the best when the world ends. The sound effects too add a lot of atmosphere to the game. The tones that characters will speak their lines in weave a believable plot of dialogue that makes each a person with ups and downs, less of a generic hero squad who were spawned by god himself and do no wrong. Added with the continued expansion on their personalities in 2 with Lohner's journal and the voice lines, we have 5 lovable people pretending to be heroes, and Kerillian is my favorite.
The aesthetic direction in Vermintide 1 is much moodier than the sequel. Many of the exact same maps are in V2, but lack the same grim touch. Wonder why.
I get it now, she’s somehow gotten into Dark Elf things. She keeps talking about Dark Elf stuff, and when she mentions her soul belongs to someone else, and you remember that she counts her kills and gains magic from them, AND that she can be a Shade (Dark Elf profession), I think she’s indebted to Khaine somehow, the elven god of murder and war.
@@cyndiebeaumesnil914 I don't think Slaanesh cares about rat souls. Khaine however is an Elven god of murder. He's like baby Khorne, cares only that you murder, not really whom you murder.
No. She was captured and heavily tortured by dark elves to the point where she was driven nearly insane, her soul is (maybe) indebted to Kaine. But, her torture forces her to wear that mask all the time to hide her grievous scars.
I'm honestly surprised they never gave Bardin and kerillan the Conversation Gimli had with Legolas at helms deep. "never thought id die fighting side by side with an elf"
- "I never thought I'd die fighting side by side with an elf" - "...How about side by side with a friend?" - "Aye, Kruber's here, isn't he?" - "The one time I say anything nice...!"
I kinda think Kruber finds Kerillian interesting. I suppose Sienna does too, but Kruber seems to legitimately wants to know about her and her experiences.
Kerillian, to an extent wants to learn about him too. Either to feel better about her own failures or to see some common ground. Out of all their conversations, they seem to find a commonality within the other
The second game is so much fun with so much more content but my god do I miss this grim dark artstyle Second game is a lot brighter and it tends to show the stretch marks as it were of the graphics The dark creepy and foreboding atmosphere they captured in this first game was gold dust Not to mention the fact that Jesper Kyd is a genius
10:45 ...i sometimes get the idea that kerillian is actually a dark elf hiding her identity or trying to live a new life... like isn't blood magic a dark elf thing and if she just means the sight of blood itself isnt it a thing with Khaine? (why would wood elves practice blood magic or whorship khaine in that way) and in Athel Yenlui (v2) she says that the ruins dont belong to her kin, and that her kin was exiled (dark elves?)+ in Lohners chronicles: a walk in the woods it is mentioned that kerillian tells him that dark and high elven outcasts are refugees in Athel Loren AND in her exile story to lohner (where he says it was probably a lie with a grain of truth) she says that her reason of Exile was the product of a forbidden Ritual for Hekarti of some famous elf that she witnessed and this elf accused kerillian of murder so she got exiled in order to silence her. Lohner says that the name of this priest was probably edited so maybe it was kerillian herself (thats why she favours Lileath but her soul belongs to another + the Chaos warriors often call her elf-witch or hag). In the Drachenfells Mission of Vermintide 2 the demon mentions her being left out and "noble Araloth has everything that should be yours" so maybe she was a noble (her Legendary skin for shade is "Clar Karond Royalblood" and thats why she is an outsider Shade and maybe migrated to Athel Loren) I mean its far fetched but this new article from lohners chronicle from 2021 gave me the idea because it mentions the hekarti Ritual (dark magic) and the fact that dark elf outcasts live there that cause problems
I do know that early on in Elven history, the wood elves were essentially high elves that were exiled. The ruins in Athel Yenlui are that of high elves. I think that's what she meant by that.
these videos you've done on vermintide are great, i've watched all of them like 20 times each :D super thankful for you making these types of videos, if you're still doing them maybe put one together for sienna? but idk if she talks much about herself, but still i super appreciate the ones you've done with bardin/kerillian.
Thanks for making this. Few videos like this masterpiece even are made anymore, least of all posted on RU-vid. Truly amazing compilation, was looking into this and needed more and yours adds alot to consider.
Kruber: "Hey Kerillian, wh-- ALWAYS sneaking, STABBING, Eshi--BL--GGGGGRRRIMNNNIIIII--GAS RAT-- Lost be-- THE STRANGLER, STRANGLES NO--Azumgi, I'm a bit--Bardin's done for!-- BY THE HAMMER, AND THE HOLY WORD!-- Eat my steel-- Fleetin SHADOWW--
i would have liked more of the maps to be converted into VT2 tbh. seeing how slow the combat is in VT2, the new combat mechanics would add to them nicely.
@@bullethail3875 probably getting some details wrong, but basically: she got some prophecy to do with ubersreik playing a large part in a skaven disaster, so in an effort to prevent it she ambushed and killed two regiments that were meant to reinforce ubersreik. this is the reason ubersreik fell to the skaven. she counts her kills because she wants to match the number of lives lost because of her.
@@bullethail3875 The Dryads told her that Ubersreik would be important for the fate of Athel Loren. I don't know if it was negatively said or not but I'm going to assume it was negative since she led a force to annihilate 2 regiments of Empire reinforcements to Ubersreik which helped the city fall. The way she counts kills is either for atonement or something related to her exile with Pale Queen theories. She's still shrouded in mystery though.
@@HoxtonRules Do be so hasty to blame just her. I think it was also implied that the city would fall either way due to some one on the inside selling out to the ratmen.
Man, i have almost 2k hours on Vermintide 2 and only a few on VT1, but all these maps look so damn good and grim dark. I mean.. I end up wondering if i dont prefer VT1 spirit and art in general.
Weapons also look better in V1 in general imo. The variety of V2 illusions is nice, but in V1 the weapons were shiny and looked sharp, in V2 theyre all grey and abused.
they are more shiny... yes I also prefer it. Its just a different more "rugged and used" in the sequel. Wish the higher quality illusions would look like that too
@@Acesahn Compare 5:46. Same mission is in Vermintide 2, but the lighting design is much less dour. The whole environment is a washed out grey-green. I don't know what happened in the sequel, but sometimes End Times looks blatantly better.
@@stonedwalljack9276 He's suggesting you made a mistake saying that Kerillian is an arrogant bitch and that you meant Saltzpyre. I guess you're both kinda correct.
@@smiglo112 Oh yeah I mean he wouldn't be a witch hunter if he wasn't. Its why I like him, he acts like a witch hunter. Everyone (but him of course) is a potential heretic.
Interesting! From all of the dialogue I was under the impression Kerillian was executed and buried in a castle but cursed to not really be dead so she suffered in a coffin for years then raised again using blood magic and the only reason she stays alive now is by killing Skaven and other evil as a puppet of her gods, which was a pact she made between her and her gods or is part of the curse. The lore has such great ideas!
I'm not sure about that, but it does make some kind of sense - the 'curse' on her feels pretty necromantic, using Shyish to draw in Dhar... though I suppose it could be pure Shyish or even Qhaysh, but the latter at least seems unlikely. Still, if she was undead, I'd think Sienna could tell. It's possible her windsight is pretty marginal, though. Maybe, instead of outright being killed, she was imprisoned and experimented on by... probably a dark elf sorceress, rather than a necromancer. A 'time bomb' in her soul that can only be delayed via murder is the kind of idea that'd drive dark elves wild.
Kerillian is so much better in V1. In V2 she just becomes annoying as hell and hates everyone, but in V1 she actually seems to have personality, she even fucking laughs and sounds happy when talking to Sienna
4:59 Hmm. Something tells me this means specifically the spaces between the winds *of magic* Hmm. The Enchanter in Drakenfels seems to be doing something similar to what Hellebron and the Witch Elves do. I wonder if that's from Nagash or a different source. Also, Kerillian seems to be drawing in energy to power something. It's not clear if it's the Shyish from the act of killing or just the general winds of magic, which would probably make it a Dhar spell. Some kind of necromantic magic?
I honestly love the respect Sienna and Kerri have for each other. It's one of the few things I like about Sienna lol. She's probably the most boring character. Even then she's still alright though.
as a wizard Sienna is less closed minded than other humans and Kerillian probably respects Sienna's magical prowess. I also like to imagine that they feel kinship since they're both women
Isn't it that she listened to a Dryad that said something about that first area would result in the doom of Athel Loren, so she went and slaughtered that massive company of soldiers (the ones that she brags about, causing the Witch Hunter to go "ELF! ELF!") which lead to the Vermintide succeeding?
@@basedeltazero714 yeah that ok but a demon is still a "natural" ennemi of Athel Loren, even more than a Asrai, and there is nothing more important to a Dryad than the protection of the forest.
@@efaristi9737 Some of the dryads hate the wood elves and believe that the forest and its spirits are stronger than they actually are. They seek to undermine and remove them from the forest so that they can be the undisputed masters of the forest, an outcome they will willingly risk its safety for. They don't understand that the wood elves are as necessary as they are for the survival of the forest and that the forest is doomed to fall without them particularly when you realise that all the spirits and magic of the forest are powerless in winter.
Yep, calling Kruber a dog when talking to Saltzpyre and basically bluntly refusing any and all interactions with anyone is so tsundere, am I right? Not like Vermintide 2 where she is much more open and talkative and actually has nice things to say (even if in a roundabound way) to people that aren't Saltzpyre, what a fucking bitch.
@@fr-joey764 I think he meant the graphics, it would be great to know the graphic settings, i play on geforce now and the game looks good, just... foggy, too bright and with little to no dynamic lighting for some reason
I genuinely think Kerillian gets judged unfairly by the community. I think it's because of the temperance we have (since I feel at least all of us have watched the Hobbit/LOTR) on preconceeding notions on elven ethics and personality. The thing with Warhammer elves is their attitudes directly stem from their emotions. It sounds HARSHLY obvious but let me make a comparison. We all get depression some way or another but the way we approach it is unique and fluctuates on a spectrum of intensity and comprehension. Some of us get cold and violent, others carry a witty and deadly tongue, others just sort of get melancholy and recluse. With Kerillian and her kind, these emotions are deeply influenced by the aura around them, the winds of magic, the interconnectivity of the Oak of Ages etc. So whatever curse and folly she faced is inherently intensified already. She simply wants better for the world because she herself bears a burden of some existential comprehension regarding freedom and morales, hence her sharp mind and wordage.
No, its because she's a sepremacist b*** who constantly reminds the party that they're lives are here and gone, meaningless to her every chance she gets lol It's not complicated.
I mean, I don't like her because she is a provocating bitch. She is Constantly trying to wind everyone up, especially Bardin. The world is ending, Rat-men are killing everyone and this bitch is trying to drive a wedge between her comrades. For a creature that so often mentions her long life, she acts like a child. Besides, "the winds of magic make me more moody and upset than you!" is not an excuse to be a dickhead and piss on the graves of others. If anything, with her eternal life she should have learned to controll her temper.
Another thing that makes kerillian hated is gameplay, if one more shade uses healing then immediately eats an overhead from a chaos warrior I'm gonna lose it
The Ubersriek Five were interesting characters in the first game. They all got a sizable downgrade in personality in Vermintide 2. Kerillian's probably one of the biggest victims of this. She was snarky in the first game, but also mysterious, and intelligent, and not all bad. In the second game, she's a loud, pompous asshole with no likable qualities.
I wish that she was smarter. I mean, there’s a reason why she calls the others “mayflies”, because the other races are short lived in comparison to elves. I wish we got to see some of that aged wisdom, but the elf comes off as kind of a dumb asshole.
nah, it got to the point it was super overbearing, shes still a bitch but more acclimated with everyone, it isnt her on the defensive anymore in V1, now its comfortable sparring and snarkness whilst sleeping under the same roof and drinking together in V2. The end is round the corner, her being the same personality from V1 rather than the accepting state in V2 wouldve been unbearable...
In her moment to moment callouts, but during quieter moments she still has plenty of more somber lines. You just don't hear them as much since 2 generally has more combat happening. Check out some compilations of her dialogue in the keep and you'll get more stuff like this. Particularly in regards to Bardin's past and her eventual transformation into a Sister of the Thorn.
Oddly enough, in V2 she softens her edge quite a bit, and while I despised her as a Saltzpyre main who was often the target of her abuse... I actually prefer her vicious and mean spirited to boring lol
Well one thing I use to dislike is none of them know why she follows them and tags along. If they did let’s just say kruber and my one eye chad would have to kill/arrest her
