The studio got shit canned because it stole tax money from my home state, and didn't sell enough copies. Schilling basically gave Rhode Islanders the middle finger, I am glad his reputation is ruined and his studio went down in flames. But for the record I get why you assumed it was EA. Shame more people don't know the truth though.
EA will get a Nobel prize for the most hated company in america. Activision,Schiling and other EA studios are a bunch of criminals preying on videogame fans.
I started playing a few weeks ago and somehow at the same time read an article about how they wouldn't have to repay the tax money used to fund them. I didn't connect the two until the third time I started the game and had to sit through the opening. I'm torn between, "This is a cool game, it's sad that they won't be able to make another.' and 'Damn that thing with the tax money is just fucked up."
Elazul2k Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha .... big Mac

its crazy seeing him saying give me a fucking break EA because of the used games. but he now closes down channels that show people his streams. even though hes already made the donation money from the stream. he goes out of his way to close down the channels that show people the streams AFTER he has made money for free. weird how nobody else notices this
This was a grade b game. The lack of meaningful progression, combined with the cartoony look and feel, in spite of the semi rustic color scheme, made this game second rate. It was a good start, but after a few dozen hours your just like, "meh".
To add to my previous statement, which was critical, the game is still worth as much time, if not more, than Skyrim. It provides pacing, like in Devil May Cry, and yet it has that massive open world, and a well thought out story, and premise. Objectively I prefer somethings to be different, but it's a solid game. If even I was entertained by it for a while: I guarantee a lot of you will play for months. It is huuuuuuuuuuuuuge!!!
I agree 100%. I played this when it first came out on xbox 360. I just recently bought the PC version. It is still fun to play. I disagree with Joe. I never expected it to have characters that look real. I thought the whole point was a fantasy story of the Fae living their tale from a "story book", and how the new races started to branch out on their own. The main character being the catalyst of this event. I thought it was brilliant that everyone looked like a character from a book, because they were characters from a story. This game and Skyrim are games that I can return to years after and still have fun.
You can pick it up for $9.99 backwards compatibility sale on the Xbox Live store! I don't think the game will be getting a remaster or sequel anytime soon, because EA has to grant permission, even though THQ Nordic owns the game license now. Buying it backwards compatible might be our best bet at this point.
@@truepatriot3768 darksiders 3 wasn't a failure, thq hit the target for that game, despite all of the backlash from those "I Can't play this is too hard" journalists
***** Jesus, the fucking cringe is actually burning my soul after reading that. Have you people ever played any other games before? Skyrim isn't even the best game in the Elder Scrolls franchise. And the franchise isn't even that great in the first place, especially after they dumbed down the entire RPG side of it. You Bethesda worshippers need to learn a thing or two about good game design.
Trug0d You simply don't get my comment. If you actually read what I wrote, you would have understood instead of reading only what you want and understanding only what you want.
I don't understand why so many fucking people say bad things about this game, I mean you can't find many RPGs like these. It has beautiful environment, an alright story and AWESOME combat
the biggest reason I enjoyed this game was the world... we need more of this folklore ish, high fantasy setting in this day and age. really hope someone picks up this ip in the future.
+HushedTerror one hundred percent agree, I absolutely love the world in this game. So diverse and massive and beautiful, wish more RPGs would go for this super bright fable-esque stuff.
+MuroPecca I will be honest... I played the game... I liked it... but for some reason it became really boring at some point and droped it, AJ pointed a lot of the flaws that made the game boring...and yeah for me the music is one of those reasons too repetitive... and the worst thing about the game is the characters look, they all look the same... :/
+MuroPecca I liked it initially, but the thing is, the game gets boring after a while because of how repetitive the gameplay and exploration is (yeah I know games can be repetitive, but somehow this game's doesn't immerse you as much as other rpgs).
***** we barely see these what you call "your usual generic fantasy worlds" in big budget games these days... I want to see more of this... I happen to like this style. But yeah, the combat was definitely fun.
It is 2021 now, feb. And i have it pre ordered on my preffered console, people are angry that aparrently this remaster ismt desrved bc it doesnt look as good as they want it?, holy shite..., i havnt even played the original! and even if i flipping did i would STILL be excited for this game, i wouldnt be acting like a spoiled brat. They are also raging that its coming to a certain console. ( Hint, its not out as of today) Comes out in march 2021. How come people cant just be happy a new gen will expeirence this?, it can only breed more fans , what are peoples problem? I just cant get enought games like this. All i hope for is a game to look decent enought lol. Honestly.. if it wasnt for a few wonky animations in the dragons dogma remaster, that is good enought for me.
I played it years ago on console but never finished it. Just picked up the collection edition on steam lunar new year sale for £8.74. I loved it back then and plan to complete it this time round.
kseries1981 I know this is an old comment but if he hadn't tried funding an mmo and the sequel(yes they started on the sequel) while the first one still had work to be done on it like glitches and etc..hell there was supposed to be more dlc coming to the first one at least 2 more
This game was just a stepping stone to building his MMO Project Copernicus which was 95% complete when his company went under. The MMO is the thing that ruined the company.
Just imagine a sequel made by the same developers but in a bigger studio , with 2k17 graphics and quality quest content , with the same combat system. It will be the best RPG world.
Just look how young he was. Even his voice was in a higher pitch. I am curios if AJ will do an angry review of the remastered version. I loved Kingdoms of Amalur and it really was an underrated game.
Skrub Edits Awsome, ill re download mine too, its a mmo but like more offline :D! and the crafting is easy and fun, normaly i realy hate crafting, but its a big part of the game and it rocks!!!
Well seeing as there are loads of characters that have little significance in the big open world, it wouldn't be particularly easy to just get different voice actors for them. Then again, loads of games have done repetition in voice acting for NPCs.
eviladam23 Yeah, I meant it's been 3 years and since then and we still can't jump in games like these xD The power of bluetooth and all of this other whacky technology, and nobody wants to let you jump whenever you want in a game lol xD
Its a shamed this company went bankrupt. I bought this game 3 years ago and played it. Some of the most fun ive had in a rpg. Someone needs to make a game similar to this but fix some of the problems this game had. Imo though this game deserved a 9 out of 10. The only problem this game had to me was there was no real incentive to play after the main story. Which is a good one imo. Playing as a mage who used swords and had the sneak of a thief was the most bad ass thing.
Zachary NC oh yeah sure is a shame all right, as much as I love the game asnd asll but fuck 38 Studio's! The government here in RI still casn't figure out how to get the money back from it's closure! 7 years later us citizens of RI are still paying for the damages!
Nostalgia, happens with every elder scrolls release. Now Syrim sucks because its popular and new, which by default makes the old games godlike in the minds of nostalgia goggled fanboys everywhere.
Armoured Rat The point of a D&D roleplaying game is to get the player immersed in the character. Most of those immersion mechanics (ie, "lawful good", "chaotic good") are supposedly mitigated by the first-person perspective. Or at least it SHOULD, because according to audience appeal, cluttering up a first-person game with reams of stats actually TAKES AWAY from the immersion.
If they had put the time and money into this series like Skyrim and TES, it could have possibly blown Skyrim/TES away. Terribly underrated game, 7/10 hardly does it justice for what it is. As others have pointed out, the combat is excellent and the story, despite perhaps a slightly flawed ending was actually very interesting. Of course I do agree with some of the criticisms leveled at the game, but they hardly seem relevant to the overall quality of the game when you're playing. Voice acting is excellent and the Dead Kel DLC lots of fun.
This is completely true. Though I don't know why they didn't put more time into the game, the reason they didn't put more money into the game was because 38 studios was a brand new company. This was their first game so their budget wasn't quite enough. Even still, they created something awesome and it's a shame to see it go to waste the way it did.
They put ridiculous amounts of money in it. The game sold over 1 million units in 3 months, surpassing EA expectations, and it still couldn't break even. It's amazing how you can fuck up your finances this bad. You know what other game sold about a million copies initially? The fucking Witcher
38 studios was working on two games at once: Kingdoms of Amalur and an MMO called Copernicus which was in the same universe as Amalur. Their attention and money was evenly split. But they didnt make enough money off of Amalur to pay back their loan and finish the mmo. Classic case of counting eggs before they hatch.
Marko Krstic Yeah definately, i grabbed it in 2013 for free on Ps Plus on Ps3, just started playing again a few days ago (from scratch) and am addicated (again). I usually have a problem when it comes to completing games, i have a few unfinished games that i haven't really cared enough to go back too (i consider myself really, really picky with games). But this game i would play two times over. On a side note, if you don't feel you'll like it, Dragon's Dogma Darkness Arisen is also really good (with large environments), they've got a remake for it. Still prefer KoA but DDDA is still great.
actually is the first thing u see and hear in the first village u go.i love this game.even after 400 hours still i couldn't complete all gold and purple armor and wepons.maybe i needed another 200 lol
Skyrim had some open-world aspects that were so much better than KoA, but they got repetitive just like many aspects of KoA (and every RPG) so yea man, This game was in many ways more engaging than Skyrim. Open-world isn't better or more fun by default. I'd love to see a hybrid of the Elder Scrolls and KoA styles.
Well.... I thing Skyrim is a good game, even great, but It's not for the taste of everyone. I'm kind of a person who likes having a long main quest, and Skyrim doesn't point that way, that's why I didn't like it so much, but I understand what people see on it and why there is people who keep playing it.
Aidan GodSlayer I agree. I never said I didn't like it actually. I meant that it wasn't what they focused on the most when it came to the game. The point is that this game is really quite good. It is one of my favorites. I wish the Witcher 3 had the combat it had and then maybe I would have liked that game more. Now that is an overrated game. Not bad, just overrated. On the other hand it looks like KOAR is underrated. Sad that the co. folded up. I would have loved a sequel.
Literally got this game yesterday and went to look up reviews if this game was worth it. So glad that my money was well spent. Time to spend the rest of Summer in my house.
Arnold Schwarzeniqqa Yeah, its quite enjoyable. Just don't do everything you see in the game. Gets quite repetitive and boring fast if you play in large bursts.
8 years later 2018: THQ Nordic buys Kingdom of Alamur rights (however still product of EA) 2020: ANNOUNCES TRAILER JULY 7th WITH Planned DLCs (that where scrapped in 2012 after bankruptcy by 38 Studio) YES THANK YOU THQ Nordic 😃 a Remaster but also a look at cut content/scrapped DLCs oh my September be AMAZING
Did anyone notice that the criticisms that he mentioned against Kingdoms could also be thrown at Skyrim, his legendary 10/10 near perfect game of the year for 2011?
Treet Don't get me wrong, I like Joe and his content and I tend to agree with him, it just seems odd to me that he'd let it all slide with Skyrim but not with Kingdoms.
ill admit Joes love fore the elder scrolls blinded him a bit in his review, but no i think the stuff that criticized about this game that was also a bit of a problem skyrim wasnt as bad in skyrim. Skyrim was by no means perfect, but I think its definitely a better game than KOA.
Bananahead88 Why not? I don't like the game as much as most people but still that doesn't mean they're wrong for liking it that much, it's their opinion and it's up to them.
What people don't understand is RPGs are not about combat only (Keyword "only") People blur the lines between the action genre, and RPG genre, and cannot compare the differences often times. for example, Dark Souls compared to Skyrim is not a very good comparison. Does Dark Souls have "RPG" listed? yes (I think it does) but is it because it is an RPG? No, it has RPG ELEMENTS, but it's mostly action. VERY LITTLE RPG. Skyrim on the other hand, what do you think all those useless items are for? Because they are useful? NO, you are supposed to wear casual clothes in towns, pick up dishes to bring to your epic house, get a wife for RP purpose. Can you do that stuff in Dark Souls? No. Just wanted to throw this out there.
Then would that make D&D not an RPG because it focuses on exploring dungeons and combat and not having useless items? Kinda stupid reason if you ask me.
tcrpgfan Different type of RP. In D&D you RP as an adventurer who goes down to fight monsters, gain glory. Skyrim just has more RP opportunities, and focuses on variety to be what you choose. But D&D is indeed not much of a RPG because it is also an MMO, where people don't give a crap about any RPG side of it. Most MMOs are like that. D&D is set for something very specific (and is not put to use) and Skyrim does not. On top of that, like I said just because "RPG" is listed in the genre, doesn't make it an RPG. It just has some elements. It's not just about useless items, you missed the point.
Exploration and assemble all the story pieces together. Thats a major part of Dark Souls too. The world pulls you into it, make you are part of it. and thats make a rpg a good rpg besides progression and a good Story. You think Skyrim is a good rpg game(sure, it IS a good game)? Play things like Fallout(1&2), Baldurs Gate, Vampire: Bloodlines, Planescape:Torment, Dragon age or Wasteland 2. And If you want to expierence real Roleplay play P&P-RPG. From the "stupid nerdy p&p crap" came all the computer-rpgs, which tried to transform this experience into a Video game. So what you don't unterstand is the difference between action-rpg and a rpg. Is Dark Souls, Skyrim or Kingdom of Amalur a rpg? No. they are action-rpgs and they focus more on action-combat then tactic and strategy. And personally I mock mass effect 3, Skyrim and any kind of such game by calling them adventures with RPGs-elements (I know It isn't truth, but while I was playing them, I didn't feel a good rpg-expierence (but a good game-expierence (if I ignore the ending of ME3
While I like Skyrim, did anyone else feel like they didn't matter in the game world. What I mean by this is, you do something that effects the world but npcs' still act like "who are you?"
This was a fun game, It had massive potential. it had a few weak spots, but I enjoyed it overall. IF THERE COULD be a sequel I'm sure if would have been a hell of an improvement, it was headed in the right direction. it has a lot of charm to it. Mix and matching class skills was fun...though Melee my main choice in most RPGs seemed lacking compared to Finesse & Sorcery. Creating weapons and gear etc, fun awesome. Sad there won't be a Kingdom Of Amlaur II or Darksiders III
I think if 38 Studios didnt went under, those weak spots would have been patched or fixed. They were already doing DLCs before they went under so I assume they would have improved the game further. There was also rumours about the studio want to turn it into a multiplayer, which would have really made the game awesome. Alas, fate had a different outcome for them.
Yea I recall reading up on them wanting to eventually get into multiplayer. it would have been amazing. Ah they will be missed. "Alas, fate had a different outcome for them" A Cruel irony for a company who made a game about someone who was Fateless. Though EA could rehire the team, seeing as to they said they wanted to publish another.
Crytek Hired the Dev team, Nodic bought the IP...the only way it can happen is with a collab...which Crytek said " we didn't hire them to make Darksiders games" ...which saddens me. still possible,Nordic said they would love to collaborate
Anybody here after the announcement of a new expansion?! I can't WAIT to get back into this game again and experience one of the most underrated RPG's out there, even to this day.
so what the fuck have to do the dark soul combat system with this? the combat of dark soul was fucking boring just nightmare difficulty and nothing..it's just like hitting with a kitchen knife on a fucking rock.
Comparing this to dark soul does no service to both games. This combat system is meant to give you a satisfying fun experience as you chop up enemies. Dark Souls has a combat system that punishes you if you do not understand your enemy. I'm sick of Dark Souls elitist. Its a single player game, I beat it, my friends beat it. It proves nothing.
Dark Souls has a good combat system for what the game is supposed to be; dark, foreboding, careful, and planning out your moves. Go in without a care and you'd get killed in a heartbeat. Kingdoms is more about the stylish, over the top, cool to look at combat. It's faster paced, combo heavy, flashy finishers. Combat systems for different game, providing different feels.
You are comparing two games that are trying to give a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TONE from one another. KoA:R is fast paced action combat that has you destroying mass amount of enemies in a plethora of different and interesting ways. Dark Souls is about timing, the right angle to attack, preparation for various battles etc. You CAN NOT compare the two. Apples and Oranges my friend.
The game is so detailed and high definition that you can barely read the text, the menus and inventory systems are meant to be so immersive but they're really just confusing and are unnecessarily complicated, the graphics are always having to load in game because it's so ridiculously flarish and the story is one of the most boring "chosen one" scenarios
Even if the story was good, the over dedication of the game to the "serious gamer" demographic turned the game into this complicated mash of menus and time forwarding systems. It didn't even feel like a rpg it felt like a strategy based game. Another thing was that there were almost no indicators on what to do or where to go.
I guess mornonic neckbeards will still lurk at 4chan to bitch about amazing things because the parent company is EA. You know the kind of person you are.
Agreed! most friends who like same games as me highly reviewed skyrim but it was hard for me to win so I sold it. Haha joe saying fable 3 sucks. I tried 2, yea it was a bit dull
Skyrim = slash 1, slash 2, slash 3, slash while walking backwards, running power slash, and w/e Kingdoms = combos, combos, combos, + abilities additional combos, elemental effects, etc. Also, Kingdoms has a wayyyy better stealth system. In Skyrim you could like be right in front of some person and still not be seen... Also, the stealth kills look better, smooth and more realistic. Skyrim's killcams look so unnatural even with mods and there's too much clipping, etc. I seriously wish Kingdoms of Amalur can have mods as well tho :( It would look so much better than Skyrim tbh... Obviously, it won't look realistic with all the saturation and everything, but still... Imagine how it would be like if you could play a character that looks just like one of those really pretty heavily modded Skyrim characters you see on like freaken Google or some japanese/korean/chinese mod site... except the character animations (movements when attacking, etc.) is Kingdoms of Amalur version... I only don't like the camera for Kingdoms tho tbh, idk it just looks a LITTLE bit too low where you can see too much of the ground
I just wish you can actually improve the textures and graphics of Kingdoms with mods like ENB and stuff. It would look so good with the DOF, HD effects, better lighting, better face/body textures and so much more.
I like the gameplay but I couldn't get myself to finish the game. It's really BORING. I was surprised that my cousin managed to get to the final dragon-like boss but he gave up because he couldn't defeat it after 30-40 attempts.
Huke Chong I actually found the game to be really easy. o.o With that being said, I have yet to kill the boss, not because I can't but because it got really boring.
Skyrim Skyrim Skyrim.... ugh you know what. The combat in Skyrim was horrible and boring. Yeah the story was good, the world was very interactive, characters where colorful and had personality to them, world was full of random events and hidden things. So yeah it was a good game but you can't ignore one aspect of the game when concluding your analysis of it. In my opinion The Witcher 2 Assassins of Kings (enhanced edition) was better than Skyrim in all regards from combat, story, choices and seeing their affects, lore, ending, characters and gameplay. In Dragon's Dogma immersion and combat was better than Skyrim's, featuring full customizable character then seeing your character in cutscenes. In Dragon's Dogma you could grab on to enemies and climb them, jump on to a Dragon to attack it and he'll fly off with you attached to him while you try and bring him down... and this is done with your actions not a quick time event or automatic kill camera. Every different enemy type in Dragon's Dogma required different tactics. The spells weren't just a flash on the screen or a bolt attack, in DD one of the ice spells summoned massive icicles that sprung up from the ground impaling your enemies. A lightning spell summoned a lightning bolt that you would hold as a whip to attack your enemies. And when I say you hold it, I mean it actually becomes your equipped weapon until you release the spell. Mystic Knights could summon a ball of energy, then you would attack the ball and each hit would launch a volley of projectiles. You could summon a meteor shower on your enemies. Weapon combat had special abilities like this too, that were not only devastating on your foes but visually exciting. I appreciate Skyrim, I wish more RPGs could be like it yeah. But it wasn't the best in my opinion, I wish more RPGs could be like The Witcher 2. The game was brutally realistic and was mature. It showed the true nature of evil, not being some boss at the end of the game but true evil lays within the very people that make up our civilization. I can't even begin to describe what your choices did in that game. No Mass Effect 3 ending here... everything you did had its own lengthy cutscene describing what became of your actions. Love interest weren't just a wife in a house they were there on your journey, with you or eventually against you. Just don't pursue a love interest if there are kids around watching you play, cause the game won't fade to black with sweet music playing in the background... it will show you everything. The RPG element was strong, for example if there was a tough enemy in your path and you didn't know how to bring it down you could go to a book seller in town, buy a book that will contains the enemies weakness. And yes you'd actually have to read it.
My main problem with it was the lack of variety. If you fought one enemy, you've seen what the combat will look like when fighting other enemies. There are some fights that require a slightly different strategy but when it comes down to it the combat will be the same whether you are fighting a person or a dragon. The only difference in combat is who you're fighting.
Agreed. The only fun i get out of Skyrim's combat is sneaking around with a bow shooting people in hopes of making them go stiff and fall over. Even then, it's mild amusing at best. If i actually tried to be series an fight things, every enemy is a pushover.
MrDustyMonk Yeah sneaking and stealth attacks are fun. I can't do the melee warrior build cause its just too repetitive. Magic is fun but I wanted a half magic half weapon build, considering the way the game is set up it shouldn't have worked but the enemies don't pose a big threat so it did. One spell I really like is the conjure a weapon but I can't tell if it does damage based off magic, or if its strength... so I'm not sure of it even though I love the way the weapon looks. It has some redeeming factors, but ultimately combat is not their strong point. And I'm not a mindless action gamer, I don't absolutely need combat. Dragon Age and KOTOR 1 were some of my favorite games and they had non-action combat but it fit well with the rest of the game. Most of, if not all, the aspects of Skyrim are epic... but then you look at combat and it doesn't fit the epicness of the game. And if combat is a major role in the game that dulls down my overall experience.
Unfortunately EA don't - the bankruptcy meant the rights are sat with Rhode Island... who want 120 million dollars for it. So, unless there is a MAJORLY generous company out there, this IP is gone, sadly.
yea...No one is going to pay 120mil Just to get the rights back THEN invest another 100mil or so in hopes to make 200mil back in profits or break even.
To be honest I enjoyed Reckoning more than Skyrim.the fact that u can kill ur way through to the end makes it kinda lame(skyrim)and compared to the story I think that Reckoning has(the idea around it) is waaay more unique than Skyrim. And I believe that Skyrim is a classic RPG,on the other hand Reckoning would be a revolutionary RPG if it had better sounds, quest variety and char designs, tho only the Fae and gnomes look the same but it may be so cuz they r a race with not many special features(?)
Characterization man... I get no attachment to any in Reckoning... thus make me stop my play time to only around 5-6 hours cause it get boring overtime... if it has characters as good as Dragon Age, it'll be a masterpiece
True... true... I enjoy playing KoA, but the lack in story left me not really caring about the world, then I change to Dragon Age Origins, having fun with the characters and Teamplay fighting... but the world aren't really enticing... nothing make me want to live there (yeah, even Kingdom of Orzammar)... Skyrim still stands as the one that amazed me since start with World full of wonders... if only other characters can be more progressed... I always feel like I'm alone even with 4 followers...
Thanks Joe. I friggin love this game. the combat is the best. I don't mind the repetitiveness, because I love kicking ass. Though I did just buy it on steam for $6, it is the best $6 game I have ever played. I'd pay $20, its really good. I agree with your critique, but i think it should have gotten an 8/10.
After playing it for a while (bought it with steam sale too) I must say i agree more or less with Joe, the combat system is VERY awesome, the faeblades and the chakrams are my favorites, the spells are awesome, and I even didn't unlock every one of them yet, the weapons and armors looks nice, gaining levels is fun, finishing enemies in fateshift is awesome, the crafting is pretty good, the whole thing with fate sounds good and interesting more or less, but the fact that you can't jump is really annoying (for me too), the graphics is nice but not very beautiful (although it has a good atmosphere sometimes), the quests are pretty average, but for me it's not really a big deal, the music is pretty forgettable, characters are really forgettable. And I still like it, and will not rest until I finish it (when I have the spare time).
Were you annoyed by the Field of View? I had headaches after playing it for a while, I also bought it on Steam. I found a solution with Widescreen fixer but haven't tested it yet, I figure this will be a perfect game for a summer week so I'm saving it. Any other methods for improving the really close FOV on the PC version?
Diamond Reactor986 Not an Australian company, an Austrian company. THQ Nordic bought the IP last year but EA still own the Publishing rights so unless EA give THQ permission which let’s be honest most likely won’t happen then we will probably still won’t get a sequel.
@Dizzy Gear Um... some Forgotten Realms writer? Um... Dragonlance!! Drizzt Do'Urden! Hes the man that created the good dark elf ffs. Everyone wanted to be a good dark elf after those books. Hes legend! Raistlin Majere need I say more? Best Mage on the planet.... Dizzy you cannot post on RU-vid for 3 days or until you figure out what you did wrong. And we are broken up for the rest of the day.
So I guess I'm the only one who got bored out of their minds playing this game? I agree with Yahtzee with this game, nothing you do feels substantial at all. Like a chore almost.
Yahtzee doesn't like anything ...I think lol. What class were you playing as? I made all 3 been playing around with them all, I feel they didn't put to much effort into Melee(Might), but I found it to be fun. I can understand your "nothing I do matters",It's not Mass Effect, or Jade Empire, or Witcher 2. but still fun to me. I think after I exhaust all the class moves and beat it a few times, it MIGHT lose it's charm.
Yeah, a lot of the issue with it was that it was originally designed to be an MMO, or at least multiplayer. The fact that it isn't leaves it with the more monotonous style of gameplay typical of MMOs, without the social aspect.
Nebuli2 It wasn't originally designed to be an MMO. That's misinformation. It was originally a game called Ascendant by Big Huge Games, set in a different universe. Big Huge got bought by 38 Studios, who were developing the Amalur MMO. They got Big Huge to turn Ascendant into Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, with the intention of using that RPG in order to bring more attention to their MMO.
Man I remember playing the demo for this on the Xbox 360 and being amazed and super into the combat system. I wonder why I never purchased it? I wish I could, but it sure doesn't help that I have Fallout 4 consuming my life right now :\
This game is truly fucking wonderful there MUST be a second game made!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#
I wonder who own the IP Maybe if stuff like Kingdom Come Deliverance is succesful, the key people; Mark Nelson, Ken Rolston, Todd McFarlane and R.A. Salvatore, could make a spiritual successor and if it comes to it, crowdfund it. I'd love for then to get hold of the IP again though. I loved this and Darksiders so much and now Darksider III is in development (after the studio that made the first two had a similar fate as 38), so anything's possible.
He likes amalurs combat but he hates the boss battles. I dont know if he likes or dislikes the combat in DD but he LOVES the boss battles. so its hard to know
I do want to say, in defense of the House of Ballads questline it actually helps to show the literal repetition of the Fae. This is literally their existence. They repeat their history word for word, action for action, in a cycle until you come along. It's just how they exist, and the Ballads questline displays that to the player and shows why the changes to the "stories" have so disturbed the Fae.
That is too much for Joe's brain to handle. He's a immediatistic manchild. Also, on a side note, the final part of the house of ballads questline alone is better than all quests in Skyrim.
I agree it may have trouble competing with skyrim or dark souls or that level of competition, but 7/10 is not the correct score. This game is freaking awesome, and on my personal list, it's right up there with Skyrim.
with me always feel limited each time I play it for only just 1 hour... I can't agree with you... Yes, there's time when I find myself having an insatiable desire to play it, but after starting... I feel massive Disappointment all the time.
The fact is that the story is great, but thats it. The reason everyone forgets about it is because there is no need to play it past the story -- it doesn't stay fun after say 25 hours. In Skyrim you don't even need to play the story if you don't technically want to, the whole world is alive, not just one storyline.
Just got it myself, and I was actually scared from the opening that I wasted like 12 bucks XD Thank god I didn't. Literally the first review I watched of it was Angry Joe. He definitely has a heavy opinion in what I buy on Steam... Sometimes XP Depends on the game, but I am sorta more excited to try it out X3 Thanks for reviewing this one Joe!
