Stelios Kiosses visits Somerset to help a woman and her son who, after eight years collecting clutter, are struggling to use their kitchen. In Blackburn, the psychotherapist tackles the hoarding excesses of a woman who has kept all the toys, videos and clothes from her older children, making it impossible for her youngest daughter to have sufficient space to play.

I just came here after watching this episode to comment on how wonderful Jack is; and I am heartbroken to hear that he took his own life. What an absolute gem he was. It didn't look like a typical hoard, in the sense of collecting lots of stuff. This was a woman who neglected herself and her son, by never cleaning and just throwing her trash on the floor. And when the son tried to cleanup some of the mess, she would discourage him. I feel sad for the son, he should have moved out of the house if he had the chance.

There was something so endearing about Jack and I came to the comments to talk not about the hoard but about him, his character and this unique essence that enveloped him. During the video, I found myself wondering about him today, what was he doing? Had he married? Did he still enjoy taking photos. Discovering that he died, has brought me to profound grief - like I’ve lost someone I cared for and not someone I met on a RU-vid video. I found it lovely that so very many other viewers saw what I too saw. Such a lovely young man. I hope his death didn’t cause his mum to slide back into the mental illness that gripped her so tightly.

I'm so saddened to hear that Jack took his life. He must have felt like nothing would ever get better. His mother was so deep in her depression she couldn't see how she was suffocating him with all her stuff and her sadness. It's really a tragic ending to his life. I grew up in a house like this, and somewhat it’s not always about not throwing things away, it’s about a lot of little things accumulating over time and then being too overwhelmed and discouraged to clean it all. YES! I think that the US version aims for the most conflict. Also, it seems that hoarders are given much more of the task to do, and 6 weeks instead of one, and I LOVE the Dr! Such a huge percentage of these people return to their old habits - at least the American show. I wonder, does anyone know the relapse rate for this British version?

@detrajackson5992 3 года назад
@@Linusrox123 I would say the potential for relapse is the same everywhere that hoarding is an issue...That is why the counseling before, during and after is so important. BUT IF they actually treat every hoarders the same for real then I would imagine they have less of a chance to relapse over there because THEY did most of the work to clean up their mess and identify AND change their behaviors that brought them to that place to begin with.

I just wanted to add this to say thank you to everyone who has made lovely comments about Jack. It’s taken me about 2 days to read most of them as it was very emotional to read them all. After his passing, I organised a balloon release for him and our friends to pay their respects. Over 150 balloons was released that day (Obviously didn’t think about the environment that day, so I apologise) A few months later, a few of our friends of Jack’s fundraised to get a memorial plaque for Jack to be put in the college, the principal gave the ok and the plaque is still up in the canteen today (that was where we all saw him and so many memories are there) The supported housing never took any responsibility for the lack of care for Jack. I have his last note and it’s heartbreaking to read. With Jack’s help, even after he passed, the first LGBTQ+ Pride of the town happened that year as he was determined to make that happen. Thank you everyone again for your lovely comments. He said in his last note “Once I’m gone, everyone will forget me” but he was far from wrong!

I can understand why she would want to stuff the sadness, but I'm glad she faced it, Jack being able to learn more about his father was a special gift. Plus, home cooked meals! Abuse is such a vague misleading word. His mother was suffering from depression. She managed to keep him alive and also turned him into a decent human being. Most psychologically broken parents are not capable of that much. They produce awful ppl . What is the use of a clean place when you are garbage on the inside. I have seen plenty of hoarders with happy kids who just move away from the hoard just as the lady with 4kids. Jack seems to have developed depression same as his mother and i suspect he was bullied as well after the show aired. I don't think its fair to say he was subjected to abuse. Sure his surroundings were not clean but he could have started cleaning as soon as he grew up which he never did. Anyway Jack seemed like a good boy and its such a sad loss to know that he is gone

I'm so glad they had an episode with a kid because that's how I got into having a thrift store shopping addiction... I learned it from my mum at a time when I was 13 and didn't have any friends, and I would go shopping for ridiculously cheap items and imagine the life that I should have been living with people who would be wildly impressed by not only who I was as a person but what I chose to buy as well. When I go shopping it's as if I get to pick out my whole life, just as I'd be able to do if there were any places for youths to socialise in my town.
