Longtime Los Angeles Lakers great and five-time NBA Champion Kobe Bryant ranked as 10th on a best player of all-time list. Bryant has won two finals MVPs, 18 All-Star selections, 15 All-NBA selections and an MVP award in 2008. Bryant comes in behind the likes of Larry Bird, Oscar Robertson, LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan and more. Marcellus Wiley & Emmanuel Acho debate if Kobe should be ranked higher than 10th on the GOAT list.

During the 99-2016 span, basically when Duncan and Kobe became the dominant players they would be, the west won 12 NBA Finals. The Warriors got the last one in the span. Dirk’s Mavs got 1. The other 10 we’re either Kobe’s Lakers or Duncan’s Spurs. Magic and Bird should not be held up any higher than these 2. They were more dominant for a longer time and get placed lower? Lebron James is 4-6 in the Finals. He’s been swept. He jumps from team to team, building a new all star team each and every time. Pau Gasol would not have a ring without Kobe. Tony Parker, Manu Ginoblil would not have a ring without Duncan. I would place Kobe in front of Duncan, because Leonard proved he didn’t need Duncan to win. Bruh most of the people in the top 10 has had more help in there careers then Kobe. Bird had a hof team while the only player Kobe has had in their prime that was first ballot was Shaq and that was only for a part of his career not even half. If we are not gonna put Kobe higher on the list then 10 then why are we still comparing him to Jordan? We all day Kobe was the closest so why is Jordan 1 and Kobe 10? That makes no sense what so ever. Kobe has more rings then everyone in the top 10 other then Jordan and Kareem. Both of them have 6, next in line you got Kobe, Duncan, magic, next in line with 5, lebron next with 4, bird with 3 and the rest 2 or less. Kobe is top 4 in scoring, he was a decent playmaker in his career. He could rebound but he didn't have too that's what your bigs are for. Kobe is a 6'6 2 guard. Not a 6'9 260 point forward like lebron. He is bigger and taller so of course he can guard multiple positions. Normal size guards can't do that. Man imagine if Kobe was able to have 3 Hof on his team to play with him like bird or even 2 like Jordan and lebron and magic and Kareem. Kobe did what he had to do to make his team successful and he did it with less help then many of the top 10 on this list

He forgot to mention Kobe is first in assist among all shooting guards….. ofcourse he included all guards so that includes point guards which will have a higher assist total magic, nash, Jason Kidd, chris Paul etc etc….. he said Karl Malone scored more points on less shots but Karl Malone was a PF who took most shots at the rim and will likely to have a higher FG%……. We didn’t even bring up the degree of difficulty on his shots due to playing with mediocre talent during the apex of his prime after shaq 2004-2008….. like if we gonna keep it a stack Why is bill russel so high on the list as he only averaged 15 ppg on 44% FG as a center…… that’s the lowest offensive production by any all time great big man ever ! Both in efficiency and in volume…. But we glorify bill russel due to 11 chips…. Why don’t we keep that same energy for Kobe who went to 7 finals and won 5

"Lebron defended all positions" is actually quite misleeading. We only say it in terms of his potential to defend all positions. In a real sense Lebron will defend ANY elite all time player from the one to three but I have my doubts about the power forwards (think Nowitski and Duncan in finals) or Centres (like a 2009 Dwight Howard - Conference finals; or even Embiid today). Something wrong with stretching these narratives and I would also say for his perceived abilities he underachieved defensively having only 6 all defensive selections, which tells me he didn't have a career-long commitment to defense. By contrast Kobe had 12 selections while Jordan had 9, relative to the length of their careers, that's a decent amount of selections.

@@jrnew1970 Hakeem is in the range of top 10 -13 greatest ever. Hakeem stats were better than Shaqs in 1. Rebounding 2. Blocks 3. Steals 4. Assists The only thing Shaq was better than Hakeem in was points per game and Shaq was stronger. Most of Shaq's points came from dunks. Hakeem moved like a guard, and was more agile with a combination of power and Finess. Hakeem was a better mid range shooter, a better free-throw shooter, and had a wide variety of Offensive moves...cross overs, spin moves, Head fakes, up and unders, was faster, had arguably the best footwork ever of a center, and The Dream Shake. Hakeem led the league in steals as a center for a couple of years and is ranked 9th overall in league history in Steals. Hakeem held the Record for most Blocks ever. The combination of his Block record and top 10 all time in steals places him as arguably the Greatest Defender ever. Hakeem is usually called one of the most complete players ever because he was dominate at Offense and Defense and had hardly no holes in his game. And Hakeem was the greatest center for over a decade...from the late 80s to most of the 90s before the torch was passed to Shaq. So yeah, he is around the top ten or right after. People don't put him directly in the top 10 sometimes or even higher than top 10 simply because he won only 2 rings. Guarantee, if he had 1 more ring somebody would get booted out of the top 10.

Man, Acho's take was awfully obtuse. 1st of, you can absolutely go on RU-vid rn and watch ENTIRE games of Wilt Chamberlain. 2nd, just because you can't see something it doesn't mean that it doesn't exist! We have evidence of the 50 ppg seasons, the 22rpg seasons, the asssist-leading-by-a- mf-center season, and every other major statistical absurdity that Wilt achieved, and 3rd and most important, what does the level of competition matters? Most centers playing were around 7 feet back then, there has always been and will ever be freakishly gifted athletes, and nobody can choose when or where are they born. You use the tools at your disposal and do your best, and if your best happens to be exponentially better than the closest competitor, then so be it.

Comparing Kobe's defense to a running back blocking a rusher is ABSOLUTELY wrong. That would be more comparable to an NBA player setting a screen or taking a charge. When comparing NBA players, you ABSOLUTELY need to take both sides of the ball into consideration. Otherwise, KD is a top 5 player if we're talking only about offense. Kobe did it on both ends. He may or may not be top 5, but he's definitely top 10 all time.

In my opinion, the two most important categories in the top ten players list are Dominance and efficiency. Difficult factor is a closed third, but Larry Bird was a more efficient player than Kobe and his grip on the league was shorter by competion and injuries. Bird never miss the playoffs while healthy and Kobe can't say the same. Bird figure out how to deal with MChale and Parish while Kobe couldn't co-exist with Shaq. Bird 4 years trips to the finals was more memoriables than Kobe's, because it was harder and full of all start players like D. Wilkins, C. Barkley and R. Miller. Kobe's foes weren't memoriables and the most important point was that the ref never bail Bird out like they bail Kobe against C. Webber and the Sacramento Kings

With this mentality…. Think about 10 years from now the youth will say Shaq would not survive in the current era. Why? Because he can’t shoot. 10 years from now, all big man can shoot. People will fail to see the domination of the era, and just see stats to prove players they never seen play. This game is evolving like crazy but the great players in ever era where long away from the mean. Meaning they were so much better than their peers. That holds. Drop the big O in the league now based on how he plays on highlights and he would get ripped up. You forget that his dominance was based that he played different, better, and cutting edge for that time period. Why wouldn’t his mentality allow him to do the same in this time period?

Some people disrespect Kobe as if field percentage is the only thing that matters. As if 1) defence isn’t 50% of the game, as if 2) context, i e shot difficulty, shot importance, shot distance etc doesn’t matter, as if 3) accolades don’t matter. Truth is, Kobe was less efficient than Bird, yes, but he was also way better in defence, and apart from regular season MVPs, has more accolades than Bird in literally everything else. I could make an argument as to why Kobe is comfortably top 5, but to suggest that he’s not minimum top 7 is sacrilege.

So much of Acho's argument is about Kobe's 12 defensive team selections. But here is Kobe's coach, Phil Jackson on Kobe's defense: "Kobe’s defense, to be accurate, has faltered in recent years, despite his presence on the league’s all-defensive team. The voters have been seduced by his remarkable athleticism and spectacular steals, but he hasn’t played sound, fundamental defense. Mesmerized by the ball, he’s gambled too frequently, putting us out of position, forcing rotations that leave a man wide open, and doesn’t keep his feet on the ground.” In that regard he was like Derek Jeter, who won many undeserving gold gloves because he played for the glamor franchise. Kobe was a good defender, but nowhere near 12 all defensive team selections good. That he got those defensive team selections over players like Ron Artest or even Bruce Bowen was embarrassing, and displayed how desperate the league was to prop him up as the next MJ.

Most spot on analysis of his defence, and great comparison with Jeter. Pre 2004 sure Kobe was a great on ball defender, but dudes really act like Kobe was elite on defence most his career. He was making All-Defensive teams when he was tasked with guarding Rondo in a finals rather than Pierce or Allen

Kobe Bryant is one of two true alpha player. It's tough to put Bill Russel and wilt ahead because when they played there was only 8 to 10 teams in the 1960's and all the talent was in Boston at the time. As for magic and bird those two had the best teams in the NBA at the time and the competition was really among 4 teams. As for lebron making so many finals, I say it was nice playing in the east but we all know the west was winning the finals. If you look at the win lost ratio of his competition in the east then you know why he scored more with higher percentage but when lebron is put under pressure his true color come out. That explains why he's 4-6 in finals. Imagine if Kobe played in the east conference lol. Also Shaq needs to be on this list he demolished his competition like no other in a dominant center era. With that being said Kobe is top 3.

Defense is half the game in basketball. Pass blocking is a much smaller part of the running back position. That's not a good comparison, but it was a really good conversation overall.
