Quimby, a watchmaker by trade, was taught Mesmerism by Charles Poyen. The New Thought Movement eventually evolved into the New Age Movement. It all dates back to 18th century Germany, in the days of the secular Franz Anton Mesmer, and his spiritual counterpart, Johann Joseph Gassner.

For a deeper dive into this subject one should read the Great Controversy by Ellen White, a co-founder the Seventh-day Adventist Church that arose during the 1840's in New England. She specifically addresses the rise of modern spiritualism and had direct experience with this satanic phenomenon. Chapters entitled "Modern Revivals" and "Spiritualism" are particularly insightful.

@endauthority Most of those concepts aren't rooted just in philosophy. Besides, philosophy is rooted in theology. Part of my point was that these ideas and systems of thought were all being discussed by the same people and had major impact on American society (see: Great Awakenings). Thomas Paine, for example, discussed a wide variety of those ideas. Paine was a deist, but he discussed atheism/agnosticism and mythicism along with much else.
