Denaturation and precipitation are in fact different things, even though they are often linked in protein chemistry. ... Instead of making a "ton of tea" and tossing the extra, why don't you the amount of water that you calculate and add just a small amount of plain water to the decoction that results to get it back up to where you want it? Making a ton of tea and dumping the extra means you're throwing away some goodies.

I double extract all of my tinctures whether it’s an herb or fungi to get down to the % of alcohol I prefer I vacuum distill to remove the alcohol. For people that may read this and don’t know distilling under a vacuum drastically lowers the temperature needed to remove the alcohol.

Hi, love the content. so useful and informative. One question, I'm from the UK, what do I look for in terms of the ethanol you use? Nothing I search seems to sound good for human consumption? Thanks!

Great explanation. However I find 15% alc to be the best for tinctures. I make a normal dual extract using 500g of dried fruit, 1l Ethanol and 1l water. Soxhlet extract with each for 8 hours and then I distill off all the ethanol and weigh the total decoction and add 15% total volume ethanol. Leaving a pretty good extraction with 15% alcohol content. This can be replaced by vegetable glycerine if you do not like alcohol

Before I found your video I followed the advice of someone else and started my tincture with 40% alcohol. Will this be ok as long as I follow the formula? In other words, Make a concentrated decoction, reducing the water decoction to ethanol ratio? As long as the end result is between 25% to 35% ABV?

I highly recommend the filter press by Magic Butter, works great for all tinctures I've pressed so far even fine ground mark.

So i just made it without seeing this video until I finished but JUST finished...i need 188 ml more decoction to make it down to new 25% (i can see it separated already) so can i reboil the mushroom pancakes that i just boiled and pressed 3 hrs ago? I grew these so I want to use them and not new ones if I can

Dry, for all dry shrooms and herbs is usually either 1:3 or 1:5, 1:3 is more concentrated medicine, 1:5 gives you more yield

Same process but you change the ratio from 1:2 to 1:3 or 1:5 depending on how concentrated you want it

can you tell me where I can find that press you used in the 1st video. Last night I did my chaga decoction and it was so hard to try and press it out by hand. I have to find a better method. I did search on Amazon and didn't see it on your website. Have you heard from the mfg? Thanks

I have a question for fresh lions mane how would you know if your tincture is going bad? Is it normal is parts start to turn Grey? I see a couple Grey spots and it's on day 5 of the tincturing process 😮

Huh, is that before or after straining away ground up mushroom? Grey doesn’t sounds good…you need to shake your maceration daily to avoid mold

@HerbNerdSchool yes before straining... it's been 2 -3 weeks now and it actually still looks good. I shake daily. But the 2nd-7th day just a few Grey spots on some of the actual lions mane. I have another week or 2 before straining and starting the decoction part of the process

Just change the ratio of mushroom to menstruum to either a 1:3 or 1:5 depending on how concentrated you want it to be - 1:3 would be more concentrated

So I am stumped. I started part 2 today. I just pressed the mushrooms and measured the %. My hydrometer sinks. I tested the hydrometer with distilled water too to make sure it was calibrated and working correctly. It is. I know there is alcohol in my tincture, I can smell it. I don't know what to do.

The same thing happened to me with a hydrometer that I borrowed from my beer brewing brother. Then I realized the hydrometer only goes up to 20%. I had to order one with scale to 100%.

Why not just blend the mushrooms in vitamiX , boil the mushroom mixture, separate the pulp, press it, infuse the pulp with the alcohol for two weeks, set the separated mushroom tea in the fridge for two weeks, then add them together after the two weeks with the appropriate equation in mind?

Hi ! :) You seem like someone who can answer my question! I Make a lions mane teincture, i took 1.14l of 40% alcool and 750g of fresh lion's mane .. I figured out after the mix that the mushroom lost his water and I think I have 20% alcohol now I dont have hydrometer and i wonder if any pathogens can grow .. I think personally that I fucked up. Can you tell me ? 🙏

I love watching all your videos! Is there anyway you can move the mic away from your face a little though. It’s very hard for me to get through the video being able to hear you breathing and swallowing. No hat it’s just very distracting. Thank you
