I was a juror on a murder trial. I had to amend my answer because the circumstance changed in real time. One of the questions was-‘do you know anyone in the courtroom.’ My initial answer no. However, a sheriff deputy/bailiff came in to relieve another bailiff. The new bailiff was someone I had known for over 20 years. I had included this info on my questionnaire. During a break in questioning another potential juror, I raised my hand and told the judge that I now know someone in the courtroom. The lawyers (both sides) looked a bit perplexed, I had to explain how I knew the bailiff. I ended up being a juror and he couldn’t come into the courtroom.

I wouldn't think a bailiff counts, aren't they just like..security guards? Unrelated to the case?

They specifically included court personnel, including the deputies.

Interesting as I know several people who work at our county courthouse and wondered about that. When I was in the courthouse to report for jury duty, I saw 2 people in the hallway that I knew, and one juror I knew. The two people in the hallway ended up not being part of that case (part of a case in a different courtroom) and the other juror was dismissed during the questioning, so none of those issues came up. I ended up as a juror. If the other juror had been seated, I would have mentioned that I knew him (former teacher at my school). I'd assume they wouldn't want us both on the same jury.

I’ve only been a juror once, i got the summons on my 19th birthday and it was a DUI trial. one of the questions they asked us was if any of us didn’t drink for non-medical reasons and only me and another lady rose our hands. when they asked me i said i was underage and the prosecutor, the defense, AND the judge laughed like i was lying. but i was a straight edge and really didn’t drink 😭 jokes on them though, bc the defense’s argument was that the BAC was because of his breath & based on his eating he wasn’t actually drunk. but i had just finished my college bio class where we had just talked about digestive patterns. i explained why i believed that argument was nonsense and ended up being the deciding factor 🤷‍♀️

I've never even been summoned. I'm 47 years old lol. I would love to be a juror! Hubby tells me I could never be a juror because I watch too much true crime but I could because I'm too busy watching national trials to pay too much attention to local stuff. I see the news headlines but never where the investigations go. Also, I'm a door dash driver so I set my own schedule, no kids at home and have a hubby who makes good money. I'd be ideal, Iowa please pick me! LOL

We should be more engaging in comments, You tube analytics give the content creators insight into which topic was most watched, discussed, liked so they can direct their energy and knowledge for what the audience wants to see. Even if Peter (John) knows by the comments during lives which case is more interesting for all the subs and members, it's still helpful to push the channel further so the algorithm can pick it up and push it further for new people. Lory's trial was engaging even with only audio, its safe to presume people will watch this trial as well. But apple river trial as a suggestion can also be mentioned here for all of us who want to follow that. Basic stuff, but I'll live the comment as algofood. Btw, its so nice to see so many new people in the chat/comment section.

Great points! And yeah the chat has been good lately, even with larger numbers watching! I’ve noticed us ALL flat out ignoring trolls that pick and pick and prod and try to get a reaction.. they got NADA the entire time and it was hilarious to watch😂
@porakanasa2006
@porakanasa2006 3 месяца назад
@@Vegas_Mel Right? That's another thing I like a lot about this group, whenever trolls come in, sometimes even directing comments towards other subs, they usually get polite answer (if they're not obvious the first time) but once they start throwing jabs, the chat either openly discuss like: Oh, it's a troll, don't mind them or as you said they're being ignored flat out. :) That's why there are no mods aside from the auto chat bot reminding us to like and subscribe. There are no even set ups for the bot to tell us behave or some specific rules, because Peter is welcoming respectful disagreements and opinions. It all comes down to an energy imo, this channel attracts people who like the unique way in which the trials are covered, but also with similar behavioral traits. So the trolls just are easy recognizable and they can't find them selves in this group. And it is both funny but also magical to see how over 31K people spend the first 30 minutes greeting each other during an hour long stream. :) Hope you're having a great week, see you in the chat...:)

I blew a judge's mind by sitting all through selection while having a most likely miscarriage. I only had an issue when it came up that one day of court would be on the day of my ultrasound. It turned out i did miscarry. He asked why i came in and didn't ask to be excused. I said because i'd love to be able to do my civic duty. In that state it was 3 months of duty. The first case was a child death, so couldn't do it. The judge(male), and attornies(both) were so sweet.

There’s another critical reason a jury would be hard to sit in a high profile case beyond publicity-the death penalty. Across the nation approximately 50% of the population are opposed the death penalty. If that percentage holds in Idaho, half the jury pool are automatically ineligible to serve as they are struck by the State. Such disparity in philosophy makes death penalty trials inherently unfair.

I can see how people end up with inconsistencies turning up even after these multiple checks. It all goes by very fast with no time to pause and think about, say, something that may be relevant that you havent thought about in years. And you spend this whole day sitting and waiting in total boredom with your brain kind of turned off, then suddenly put on the hot seat, it's hard to suddenly scan your brain for everything in your entire life.

It is really difficult to get out of jury duty for financial hardships in the 2 counties in which I've been called, unless it is more than a month service. Then you need a not from your employer that you will not be compensated in any fashion. The only reasons would be primary care giver, full-time student, or medical, all of which require proof of some sort. Too many people lie to get out of jury duty.

There’s a shortage of the ‘medication’ used in the lethal injection procedure because the US imports it from Europe namely Switzerland and the Swiss government is refusing to export the ‘medication’ as they are ethically and morally against sending said ‘medication’ to end a human life. The numbers as I understand them: After they get their 50 pre-qualified potential jurors (after all the 'strikes for cause') each side (the state and Chad's attorney, John Prior) gets 16 preemptive strikes for any reason. That will leave 18 jurors - 12 + 6 alternates.

Actually 2 people from the first group on Day 1 didn't show up. They came in today. Day 1 they started with 28 jurors and they kept 16. The first question they asked all the groups was about hardship and they got rid of a bunch of people. They sent out 2000 juror forms to be filled out. Hopefully, by the end of day tomorrow they will have the 50 they need. Then they will go through them on Friday and the trial will start on Monday.

Ah man. I think having to do a 5+ week trial would be grueling. But I do have that sweet spot for being on that sort of jury. State employee. My section could function with out me for a month or two and we get PTO for jury duty and things like that. It's separate from our annual and sick leave. Which is great b/c come to find out, even the district court only pays $12 a day, plus like sixty-some-odd cents per mile (round trip your home - court). Which is wild. I spent that much on my lunch the one time I've been called for jury duty. Got close, but didn't get picked for a jury that day. I think I was the only one walking out kind of bummed about not being picked. Lol!

This is so difficult. I know I would base my final verdict on the trial I watched and the evidence presented. I’d rather want that I could vote guilty or not guilty without the knowledge that a guilty verdict could end up as a death penalty decision. That decision should lie with the judge not jurors. I could never be comfortable with knowing I chose for a person to be put to death. That’s too much for me. If someone is guilty, I want them punished. But I don’t want to choose the punishment.

It does seem like striking a prospective juror in front of other prospective jurors is kind of like giving them all a “how to” for either getting on the jury, or getting out of it. Being on a jury for eight to ten weeks would not pose a problem in my life. Love your videos! Yes, please continue to cover it. My view on crimes like this and the victims of these crimes is this: Until the end of a trial we shouldn’t bonus on the victims. Until then it is possible the defendant is NOT GUILTY. If the jury gets it wrong, bc they want justice for the victims, then we have one more victim. It is always I possible that the jury gets it wrong AND convicts the wrong person. But, we have to assume they don’t get it wrong. Does that make sense?

I had a panic attack about whether I could be impartial, I think I’m the only juror that the /judge/ excused without even consulting the lawyers. He had to stop me in the middle of a ramble, and have me repeat everything for the court reporter more slowly, and then told me to get the h*ll out of his courtroom, and get a doctors note for any future summons. I know it sounds mean, but he was actually very nice about it. The entire selection was a bit of a show since like 80% of the potential jurors were students on spring break and the trial was expected to take like 5 weeks.
