This is a quick how to load a ladder test video, I am testing these Sierra 100 grain Gameking over four different powders Hybrid 100V, IMR 7828SSC, H4831SC, and H4350. Each powder will get 3 different charges and I will be trying 4 shot groups. Tools I use in this video include Lee Precision perfect powder measure, frankford arsenal digital scale, Lee O frame single stage press, and Lee Precision Reloading dies. Ammunition components are Hornady 243 Winchester Brass, Federal gold medal match primers, Hodgdon and imr powders with Sierra Bullets. I’m going to send groups and chronograph all the data for the follow up videos to this series. Any questions please drop a comment!

Excellent! Scales are not perfect but typically have a level of precision. Some reloading scales measure +/- 0.1 gr so for example a charge that measures 40.0 gr may really weigh 39.9 gr or 40.1 gr. I like to put all my cases upside down in the loading block and then turn right side up as cases are filled. I also color-code using sharpies the primers for each different load to help in case I drop them at the range. Thumbs up on your video!

When loading a cartridge, as soon as I fill it I move the just filled cartridge over to the far end of the cartridge base as a reminder of which case is next and to isolate filled casings.

A very good tip about taking a Sharpie and putting it on the cartridge to what powder charge and what powder because I'm loaded stuff before not stick a piece of paper in there and forgot what I loaded them with LOL

I’ve forgotten as well, even worse it was for load development and they shot good but I couldn’t remember what I did! Haha

Great video. I love the .243 cartridge and hate to see yours go but know you will enjoy the new rifle. I have a Lee classic 4 hole turret press and have been wanting a single stage press for various chores. The Lee challenger seems strong enough for what I would use it for and the price is right! Enjoy the 243 while you can!!

Definitely a great cartridge and I would have no hesitation buying another one down the road. These Lee presses are great I would definitely recommend one to anyone interested in a single stage!

Fortunately it's impossible to get 80 grains of powder into a 243 case. Imagine that blowing up in your face...

I’d be less scared of an over charge vs shooting a squib then shooting the next round! Thanks guys!

Hi there. What would you recomend for 243 win 1/10 twist on reloading 55 gr.? From W. South Africa. Would you even load such a round for this gun or can you? Thanx

Hi. Nice video. However there is one thing you do/say that just seems silly: at 10:25 you talk about “tapping on your powder to get it evenly distributed in the pan to get the weight evenly distributed on the scale”. Well no matter where the powder is in the pan, it doesn’t change the footprint of the pan and the weight will register the same on the scale!! It doesn’t matter at all!!

Would you tune the jump to lands before or after getting a powder charge tuned in.
@WestDesertShooter
@WestDesertShooter 5 лет назад
After, then check if the charge changed slightly by upping it .2 and decreasing by .2 and seeing what it liked

The powders you are using right now can you load any other calibers, with those powders ??? Can't wait to see the other video . Thanks
@WestDesertShooter
@WestDesertShooter 6 лет назад
Hey dude, absolutely! The H4350 works in a variety of other calibers like 260 Rem 6.5 creedmoor 280 Rem and plenty more. H4831 is slower burning and works best with heavy bullets and large cases like 160 grain+ 7mm mag or 300 Win mag 7828 is slow as well and is used in similar cartridges. Hybrid 100V is used in creedmoor 243 260 280 Rem 7mm WSM 300 WSM and a bunch of others. If you get a chance to grab a Hodgdon magazine they will list which powders work with each cartridge or a loading manual. Makes it easy to understand where each one fits in.

Is this cost effective? I have a long way to go until I can reload my own, but does this save you money on .243? I hear some reloads can end up costing you more. Thanks in advance great video you got my sub!

Do you crimp the game kings?
@WestDesertShooter
@WestDesertShooter 6 лет назад
Nope, these do not have cannelures and I usually don’t crimp my rounds. Even my 75 grain AR bullets I don’t crimp and I haven’t found any issues yet so I skip it. I have messed with crimp on my 55 Vmax Bullets but that was just messing around to try the die out

When trickling into that particular scale pan I have found that it’s a good idea to lift the pan up off the scale as it will give you slightly incorrect weight if you trickle whilst on the scale. I have the same digital scale. Thanks for the great vids, I am new to reloading and you have helped me considerably. Looking forward to the results Enufzed Downunder in Oz

Always full length size with correct bushing.
@WestDesertShooter
@WestDesertShooter 6 лет назад
Mine are not bushing dies so I’m not sure what you mean here
@michaelhmontenegro
@michaelhmontenegro 6 лет назад
You mentioned you neck sized the cases. My comment was stating to FL size instead and preferably with a bushing die. We need to get new reloaders off this neck sizing option.

@@michaelhmontenegro Hello Michael, I’m just getting started in reloading. Some recommend neck sizing only as to increase brass life as the brass after being shot in your barrel will fit your specific barrel chamber perfectly. Also was told that after awhile the brass will get tighter in your specific chamber and then thats when you want to use a full length (FL) die to return it to factory SAMMI for O.D dia and headspace. Also was told that FL resizing is a must for auto loaders every time, unlike bolt guns that have a more powerful camming action of a bolt VS the auto-loader or lever type gun. I wish someone could explain in detail the advantages of FL sizing your brass Vs only neck sizing? Seems there are a-lot of different opinions on this subject, and must say I’m scratching my head wondering what this old boy should do for his .223 autoloader and .243 Win bolt gun. Note: what I reload will only be going back into the same barrels. Thanks for anyone that can explain this clearly and factually as best as possible. ✌️😎👍🇺🇸

Please go on and show us how to tune the jump to the lands.
@WestDesertShooter
@WestDesertShooter 6 лет назад
I can do that with another rifle like my 6.5 creedmoor or WSM but these will be the last shots for the 243. I’m sure these Bullets will shoot fine with a jump. It’s usually VLD Bullets that need tuning

Why did you choose to go in whole grain increments rather than half grain or like some other RU-vidrs .2 or .3 gr increments
@WestDesertShooter
@WestDesertShooter 6 лет назад
Time and cost, I won’t be doing anything further with these bullets so this helps show going from a medium charge to a pretty stout charge. Also I don’t trust my current scale to give me accurate enough readings to do .2 increments. Also it costs more to shoot more bullets. But I also shoot 1 grain increments for most my tests until I get up top.
@TheEnufzed
@TheEnufzed 6 лет назад
I have the same scales and they don’t give a correct reading if you trickle the powder while the pan is sitting on the scale . Thanks for the Great vids, new to reloading and I have learnt a lot watching them. Enufzed Downunder in OZ
@craiglacount89
@craiglacount89 3 года назад
I would agree with you, whole grain increments is too large! especially if you are loading towards the top end of the charge rate on a particular powder/bullet combo you can get in to high pressure range from one group to the next too easily. Also you could very well miss the sweet spot by making such big jumps from one load to the next. Example in my 243 when using RL-17 41.5 was my best load, 41 grains was not good at all and neither was 42 so I went back and made adjustments of 41.3 and 41.7 and found that 41.5 was exactly what my gun wanted to shoot.
