I like the no-shoes look lol. Would be cute for Mori or farm-style classical lolita. Also i think lolita is very consumerist now, you gotta be in a room with brand bags taped on your walls and 500 korilekkumas on your bed. I remember Lolita in 2012 being much more of an alternative fashion with the adjoined alternative lifestyle, like all alt fashion used to be. Lolita started as rejection of expectations for women and humility, so of course you're gonna go sit on a lawn and ruin your frivolous, expensive dress like some kind of idiot, that's what it's about.

I never understood the huge deal about this ? At the end of the day, Lolita is clothing, just like regular wear! It needs to be washed anyway, so why over worry about *potentially* dirtying a piece? 😅😅 Clothing is made to be worn... I get it if it's a print you know is difficult to wash for whatever reason, but most dresses these days???

@@Libby7428 For me, I invest in the clothes and although most lolita releases aren't "rare", they are limited. I rather not put my dresses at INTENTIONAL risk for something I can't immediately replace if say I wasn't able to fix/remove a large/severe stain/tear. Accidents happen, of course, but I treat my lolita like porcelain 😂 If I don't HAVE to put my porcelain at the edge of a table, I'm not going to. Personally, of course.

8:15 : That's not a print, that's AP's Bloom OP in yellow from 2008 lol. (Also why do I have like half the things these girls were wearing in this video..? >>) Also WOW look at how vibrant that Sugary Carnival was before the prints had started fading! ;__; Also I am not at all bothered by their not wearing shoes; they're obviously just hanging out in a park for a picnic, and idk maybe this is because I'm a country bumpkin but there's just something so nice and freeing about running around in warm grass barefoot. I'm sure they wore shoes to and from the park and in the boat, those shots just weren't included. It's very playful and childlike which was definitely something lolitas focused on back then, like when you see them playing patty cake. There was a big focus on retaining childhood and youth and just being free and careless in lolita--which is actually explained a bit in the essay Lolita: Dreaming, Despairing, Defying, which was published in 2011 and I did a reading of last week on my channel in case anyone is curious!

The OP that Victoria wears in the beginning (the one you said "What print is that? We'll never know" about) is actually a solid dress, it's called Bloom OP and the flower details on the bodice are made with fabric. I think it was quite underrated, even at the time, which is a shame because it's really pretty!

Yeah I always wanted it in mint. And the yellow version is a very pretty yellow and in general a colour not often enough used by the designers. The dress in general is such a nice idea and being very unique in my opinion but without being extra loud with print but istead such details as the flowers in the bodice. BTSSB Saint Gabrielle JSK and Metas Velveteen OP with Detachable Yoke also fall in this underrated category in my opinion.

I can't even make it through the book Lolita. It's too triggering of my own past trauma. I wish people would pay attention to the things Dolores is actually saying and doing. The things she says don't match up with her abuser's claims and images- which is the point. But it's hard for me to grasp how people miss these things when they're not even "between the lines"- it's all out in the open. But that's exactly what makes the book a pointed statement about abuse. People looking in from the outside can easily miss things that are "right in front of their faces", and will take people's word for things without getting the other side of the story. People read the book and simply take the word of its intentionally unreliable narrator at face value. Same thing often happens in real life. That was generally the point, but the point still goes over some people's heads. People still bizzarely think it's a "love story". Also, random rant, but people still call her "Lolita", which was her abuser's nickname for her, rather than her actual name (Dolores) when talking about her character. People don't define her character outside of his narrative much at all. Maybe I'm too sensitive but that's always bothered me a bit. Imagine if everyone only called you by the nickname your abuser made up. Sure she's just a character, but this happens in real life too, which is why I can't help but cringe at it a bit. It's a hard part of recovery for a lot of people, getting out from under the identity chosen for them and building their own seperate from the abuse. At least it was for me. I guess that's what it reminds me of and why it bothers me.

@cynamonowacma
@cynamonowacma 4 года назад
From what I gather the name Lolita is short for Dolores. I've heard women named Dolores being called Lolita by family and friends before, so I'd say it's as much of a nickname as Kate is for Catherine and such. Although I agree with the rest of your comment on her character being defined solely by the relationship to her abuser.
@KLT-id9nm
@KLT-id9nm 4 года назад
I've never head of Lolita being a nickname for Dolores, and no one else in the story calls her that if I recall. I've read it's a term for a young maiden in certain european countries, sort of like jeune fille in french. Although according to wiki: Lolita is a female given name of Spanish origin. It is the diminutive form of Lola, a hypocorism of Dolores, which means "suffering" in Spanish. I don't know if that means it's a nickname or an alternative. Personally, I think my point still stands- people choose to use the nickname her abuser used for her instead of her actual name, even though she also doesn't call herself Lolita at any point as far as I recall.

On the lolitas liking Lolita topic: so from what I’ve heard of the book is that it is often misinterpreted. The idea behind it isn’t glorifying terrible, awful things, but instead is supposed to show that no one in the girl’s life was thinking about her wants or needs and they just keep projecting what they want onto this teen girl. That’s just an interpretation I’ve heard. Sorry if that’s too complex for a cute video!

CaptainPygar agreed. It was actually something Geek Remix brought up in one of their recent playthroughs because the ending of the game ended up being a situation where everyone in the game was very obviously projecting the same kind of ideals shown in Lolita onto this girl who is the subject of the game.

The book is great from a literary standpoint, it's one of the best known examples of unreliable narrator. It's perfectly okay to like it because of this. The book does NOT condone pedophilia or child grooming. Unfortunately it is often misunderstood as such, which is extremely worrisome.

Not for it's subject matter, but because I love psychology and delving deeper into the minds of people who aren't "normal" The language is also very poetic and beautiful which is it's best selling point honestly. OMG 2001: An Anime Odyssey! The guy at the very beginning that yells, 'everybody love sailor moon'? I used to go to his house and watch anime when I was a teenager. Worse, I met him through his online fansub distro (we used to send blank VHS tapes and a money order to random strangers online, and they would record whatever anime we requested onto those tapes and mail them back to us... because we were FOOLS! and the internet was a very new place). He was the only person that had Sera Myu, and when I realized while filling out my money order that he lived in my town, I contacted him to ask if I could GO TO HIS HOUSE AND GIVE HIM THE MONEY ORDER. He then invited me over for an anime viewing party AND I WENT. The good news is, he was a totally sweet guy, and I ended up having a blast every time I went over to his place. Still. As a mom now, I'm very disappointed in myself. I used to carry an 8mm camera with me to every anime con I went to, and I have loads of footage from cons in the early 2000's (starting with AWA 2000 and Anime Expo 2000). I'd usually vid capture the footage and upload it to my website for my friends to watch (this was well before YT) or transfer it onto VHS and send them all copies. I'm very ancient and my bones hurt.

I've been to a few picnics where everyone had barefeet until we had to go somewhere or leave, because you don't want to cover your heels in mud and grass, and because it's just more comfortable. In 2010 my comm had their ILD at a beach that was 3 hours away for everyone attending. No one kept their shoes on. Our feet hurt. We had a lolita olympics with like school gala type events (sack race, egg-and-spoon, skipping rope race, etc.) and there would have been no way to do that in lolita shoes.

I literally just found your channel today and have been putting them on in the background while I do stuff but then I came to this one and had to sit down and actually watch because I just kept remembering the con days of the early 2000s. Those were the days when I had to stop including Lolita fashion in my art because people both in and out of the community gave me such a hard time about it. It was at that time when wealth was making an extra huge difference in the community and people with more money had stricter rules to keep people with less money out. My designs weren't considered "real" Lolita by the "experts" around where I lived because "real" Lolita had to come from Japan. Twenty years later, here I am, rambling to a Lolita RU-vidr (sorry) all to say that several hours of shuffling through your videos has inspired me to start drawing Lolita again, so thank you.

@Slithera
@Slithera 4 года назад
I think the first stage is to talk to your family about it, tell them what it is, why you like it, show them pictures of the style (classic lolita is generally considered the least "extreme" so I recommend starting with that), address any concerns they may have etc. You know your family better than anyone in this comment section so you have a better idea how to talk to them and how they might react, but I suggest preparing yourself with some links to documentaries about the fashion that they can watch; Lace & Petticoats, Lolitas Of Amsterdam by Style Out There, and the lolita fashion episode of Weird Threads are the best ones that immediately come to mind, and you can find them all on youtube. I also suggest that you mention the name of the fashion *after* you're done explaining and showing what it is; this isn't universal but some people tend to jump to conclusions when they hear the name lolita, and it could be difficult to change their minds afterwards. If they continue to be bothered after all this and even try to prevent you from wearing the fashion, I'm afraid that in that case the best suggestion would be to just wait to wear it until you move out. Hopefully it doesn't come to that though! Also, don't be discouraged if your family doesn't accept it right away or thinks it's weird or silly, it's possible they'll learn to at least respect it because it's something that makes you happy. I wish you the best of luck! ❤️

At 10:51 or thereabouts, that's the Hartford Convention Center in Connecticut. I'm guessing it was for CTcon (or Connecticon). It usually takes place in July. 2009 was before my time, though. I went to my first convention in 2012! Side note: I'm not surprised that the subjects of the documentary seem to be highly educated young women. Connecticut (and the east coast in general, as you probably know) is well known for its good school system, and colleges like Yale and UConn. That's why the comment about them liking the novel didn't shock me; I think they might've been able to study it in depth and appreciate it for what it's trying to say. It's beautifully written, truly, but that doesn't mean they agree with the narrator! Connecticut is also home to a lot of wealthy residents, which is probably how the ladies were able to afford their co-ords at a time when lolita was not as accessible... and not have to worry about getting their stuff so dirty.

That book is literary the reason why detective genre became a thing, and why so many great works could be created - it did NOT follow the HERO. It is the very first work in classic literature that made you understand the ANTAGONIST and people were sooooo mad at first at the author, how dare he trick them like that and so on but eventually this was recognized as the storytelling breakthrough it is. Also the Lolita was until at least 2010 unsurpassed from language use viewpoint as masterpiece, Nabokov was HUGE language nerd and that book has so many clever layers and playing on small similarities between words or phrases or slang it's absolutely crazy. And just the sheer number of never repeated words he used for writing that book. Nabokov was mad level linguistic genius. He also found the character completely terrible and was genuinely surprised that anyone would think he the author in any way support the characters's actions, Nabokov thought that the very moment of naming the main protagonist that bad sounding weird name is clear sign he, Nabokov, does not want anyone to like the character and on the contrary, wants the reader to dislike the character the more the further you read the book. On the lolitas liking the Lolita question, there are many lolitas who in fact like the book as great literature work, but it is not something you are going to talk about with camera-armed interviewers typicaly.

@@leadandelion5127 I don't know how you get past the REVULSION of the fact that this is a story about a man repeatedly raping his stepdaughter over the course of 2 years. Also, Nabakov wrote stories about grown men sexually abusing underage girls at least 4 other times before he wrote Lolita. Makes me wonder if he was an active pedo, or if he simply derived pleasure from retelling the story of child sexual abuse over and over again.

I discovered lolita from this doc. As far as I can tell Victoria doesn’t have any online presence anymore. Aly/Miss Lumpy was my favorite from this group. She epitomized classic lolita style to me and was (still is) so gorgeous.

there is an intresting article about Boystyle ,that mentions Kodona www.wunderwelt.jp/libre/en/15580/ if Ouji is supposed to be a prince ,kodona is just a young victorian boy of the working class and I think if the model on this show could wear oxfords instead boots the whole look could be better

Sometimes the rules make lolita seem more like a costume than a real style. It's like we don't want it to be seen as a costume but we still treat it that way anyway. It seems a lot closer to cosplay than a personal style. Also why is it a big deal that those girls took their shoes off while they were in the grass?
