Are there any limitations when using a LASER rangefinder? This video discusses the employment of LASER range finders in detail.
L.A.S.E.R. Definition: Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation
A LASER Rangefinder Operates on simple time of flight principle. Distance = Rate x Time
Advantages:
Very quick and easy to use
Can give very precise measurements to the target (+ or -- 3m)
Does not require knowledge the objects dimensions to range accurately -- can range trees, hills, etc...
Limitations:
Beam Divergence: is an angular measure of the increase in beam diameter or radius with distance from the optical aperture or antenna aperture from which the electromagnetic beam emerges.
Scintillation and Beam Wander Effects: occur due to different air densities along the way... this essentially turns the air into a lens which can deflect the path of the beam.
Beam Grazing: can prove to be problematic when ranging targets that are either only partially exposed OR when ranging targets that are located in front of a somewhat undefined backstop. When the beam of the LASER is grazing the target from a low angle (whether it be through grass or brush, or maybe even across a long smoothly sloping area like unobscured desert terrain, the level of confidence you have that the target itself is actually being bracketed (and NOT the ground in front of it or behind it), drops dramatically. This is one area, where optical rang finding methods (such as milling the target with a reticle) are superior.
Unseen Obstructions: Some of the beam might reflect off leaves or branches in front of the target, giving an early return and a reading which is short.
Mirage: At longer ranges, the target may vanish into a mirage, caused by temperature gradients in the air.
OTHER LIMITATIONS:
Risk of enemy detection.
Performance is Dependent upon Power Supply.
When to use LASERs:
When determining ranges to TRPs at extreme long ranges
When high value targets of opportunity present themselves outside your predetermined range (off the card) and time is limited.
When enemy is not equipped with LASER detection equipment
Or anytime when your location is no mystery and you need ranges in a hurry.

Thanks brother for your awesome SNIPER series, it is good to see how you transpire experience and good will. I'd like to know if you know about some ultimate scope that will use a mounted rangefinder and makes the math for you in a snap, like the Burris Eliminator but more of the sniper kind. Is there anything like this? What material do you recommend for range finding? Tks

Very interesting video. I did not know LASER was an acronym. For me, the Leopold RX 800i TBR works well for what I do. Getting beyond 100 yards is a rarity for me, and I only own one scoped rifle. A .17 HMR. I use mine for setting targets at the range. No longer have to get the measuring tape out. Very accurate for what I do, but the knowledge in this video was very interesting. Until this video, I had no idea a LASER could have Beam Divergence, Scintillation and Beam Wandering and Beam Grazing. That explains why I might get differing distances when just playing with it for longer distances for fun where I can’t actually shoot.

Great series of videos. I mean GREAT. I enjoy your teaching style too. I have no training and no experience in long range shooting. Just the spray and pray method I used in Viet Nam. This deficiency is quickly fading as I practice, practice, practice. Your series is my go-to first videos. I also have gotten to know you through your videos and I know you are ,as I am, open to improvement and learning new things. I noticed your pronunciation of scintillation is incorrect. It is pronounced as sin(t)lˈāSHən. I first heard this technical term in my Astrophysics class when I pursued and achieved my degrees in Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics. As a side note, I have assembled my first ever long range shooting platform. I am out past 300 meters (consistently) and with training, learned skill, and luck, I hope to push out to as far as I can while not being the weak link in the total shooting system. Keep up the great dissemination of knowledge. One can never know too much nor have too many skills.

One word WOW. I honestly am suprised rex doesn't make us pay for this amount of in-depth analysis. And knowledge. Ty explains why I have trouble with my 175 dollar Nikon range finder. At longer distances ........oh and try paying for one that auto calc your angle omg just learn how to convert. Thru a calc.

Hey Rex, thanks for the series. Not many people like to get that detailed about everything, but that's how I am so your reviews have been a great starting point for me. I am looking for a decent range finder but I'm not sure if any of the newer Newcons compare to the 2000 pro you recommend. I will be shooting a .270wsm and a .338lm. Wondering if there is something to cover those ranges effectively in 4-5 hundred zone. Any recommendations are appreciated!!! Thanks Dude!!!

Rex, I think youve did what Ive wanted to do for along time. I also have a long barreled AK(RPK type) and when I use a drum Mag and want to repostion it, it seams if I had a carrying handle like FALs have it would be so convient. The AK you have at 5;15 looks like it has a FAL carrying handle. Is that what you did ?

you talk about beam divergence is there something that is different with lasers? The reason i ask is to me it is a convergent beam in the illustration due to the beam propagation getting lager the farther it goes vs narrower. the way that i was taught about divergent and convergent is as follows. < this would be a example of a divergent and > this is a example of convergence. i know that jet engines use this tech to create thrust and at supersonic speeds this flip flops. is this the same with lasers

If you are able to tripod the laser it makes a huge difference in getting solid returns. I get consistent readings out to about 2800 yards with a discontinued terrapin ranging trees and brush.

What about optic rangefinders like the rangematic 1200? Just got one seems like a nice option downsides being weight and less accuracy ranging longer distances where error matters most in shooting.

Hi Mr. Rex...it's been a while since I've talked with you hope all is well. I do have a question that is racking my brain about range finding at night? I have a high dollar scope and unfortunately it's second focal plane and can only range on 22 power and as you already know, most clip on night vision devices will start to degrade after maybe 10 or 12 power so I have to crank the power down, I can't use the npr1 retical for range estimation, I am 52 and my eyes aren't 20/20 no more and would like to use that extra magnification. I know getting out before dark and lasing area and making a range card would be one way but then your sitting in one spot waiting for your quarry to come into your kill zone. Then another way is to rezero my gun on say 8 power and comfirm drop data from 50 to 500 yards and don't touch elevation turret when shooting at night but that would mean more data cards to keep track of. I've tried putting lecia range finder in right eye and pvs 14 in the other and that is a pain in the buttkis and trying to hold a range finder in front of a helmet mounted pvs14 is even more pain in the buttkis...So I turn now to the all knowing TiborasaurusRex for his wisdom, Lol. Besides the $4800 dollar Wilcox sold by TNVC do you have any other suggestions on ranging at night? Thanks Rex an hope you had a great 4th of July. Puzzled in Wyoming...Mickel

Hey Rex, how does the Newcon do with black small objects, say up to 150 meters?
@jameshoiby
@jameshoiby 2 года назад
I'm skeptical that "scintillation and beam wander" or, more properly, atmospheric refraction, is a significant problem for range finding. I would expect that it would be self-correcting. If you aim the beam in the direction the target appears to be, as opposed to the actual direction of the target, the laser light should bend its way TO the target the same way the light you are looking at for aiming bent its way FROM the target, thus automatically compensating for the refraction. Of course there will be small, high frequency changes in the refraction path from moment to moment, but these will generally be swamped by the beam divergence. Of course a bullet's path doesn't necessarily follow the light's path, so on very long range shots in conditions with varying air density (such as with varying temperatures) along the flight path, there might be issues with hitting the target, as opposed to ranging it. I know more about physics than long range shooting, so If I'm missing something, someone please let me know. Thanks for the great video, it's full of great points to know!

TiborasaurusRex One more question. Have you talked about harmonic devices added to the barrel? If so, please tell in what part of your series it is covered. If not, can you quickly say if it is worth investigating or not. Being a scientist and engineer, I know and understand harmonics is a real physical phenomenon but is it a real factor in long range shooting. I am setting up my rifle as we speak. Thank you. how do high quality long range capable range finders work on a round ball shaped earth? Either the laser would have to curve at the same curvature of the earth (when ranging long distances like over a mile) or the Earth is flat. No matter what terrain your on, your laser will ALWAYS point in a straight flat line....so How the heck can a range finder work accurately long range on a sphere? The earth curvature is 8" per mile squared. So at one mile the earth drops 8", at 2 miles it curves 24"..etc The laser could not work long range on a flat plane, like the ocean, a lake, a flat desert..etc

I'm thinking about making a pocket weather station and I would like to know what else you guys think I should add to this. Yeah I know there are some out there that already have this stuff integrated in them but what's the fun in that when you can make it yourself? I'm not trying to make this into a full blown computer just a weather station of sorts. Here are the sensors I have planned to include. Barometer (Pressure and Altitude) Temp Sensor Humidity Maybe an anemometer but not for the first prototype. Can you guys think of any other sensor I would really need in addition to these? I will be developing this on the Arduino platform with an LCD.

does anyone use lasers to actually find a sniper before they take the shot,i see that lasers are used to map caves etc by taking millions of measurements.lasers could be set up on the outskirts of a village as a permanent sentry before a surrender and when a sniper tries to take position the laser picks up the distance difference and alerts a counter sniper to their position.

Leica Disto D2 is a nice measuring laser for approx 100 meters to check turret travel when testing the reticles mechanical accuracy per click. The Leica is accurate to about 1/16" out 100 meters IIRC. For setting the target distance from the turrets or muzzle etc 100 meters exactly. Locking scope in and using the 8' HORUS drafting print is even better to check mechanical accuracy of the reticle mechanics. Seem very hard to find those charts now days though.

Actually none of this makes sense... I stopped the video, so maybe you explained and I didn't see it. So lasers reflect off of any surface right back to the source? Exactly when did this phenomenon begin? A laser is basically light. Different materials and substances have very different reflective properties. As a basic example, black absorbs light and white reflects it. I think there's some funny business going here... besides being told that when we "went to the moon" we put a mirror on it's surface so we can shoot a laser at it... and regardless of the defusing properties faced when exiting and entering the atmosphere of earth, angles of orientation on both ends or speed of rotation of the earth... it would just send that little laser allll the way there and right back and into the source. Ummm okay. Clearly there's lack of clarity. edit: I watched a little more and he mentioned beam divergence, which basically reinforces my skepticism of the whole moon/laser thing... do you realize how POWERFUL a laser would have to be to do what they claim???
